Emma Vigeland takes a call from a Majority Report viewer who mentions that earlier in the show, the MR crew was talking about strategic racism. A debate about welfare slowly begins. The caller is a centrist, and he takes issue with lax social safety net disbursements, namely “welfare,” by which he presumably is referring to Supplemental Security Income (SSI), probably housing assistance programs, and what people still refer to as “food stamps”: the Child's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
First the caller says that his cousin had nine children because she was on welfare and there were no controls on the system, and that now one of her kids is a hitman. (Okay??) Then he says that he is a “depopulationist,” and that the government should cut off assistance to people who have too many children that they cannot afford. Things really devolve from their. The caller is big on “personal responsibility,” and it’s incredibly difficult to understand who he thinks should determine who decides this.

@@janes7227 yes. “Overpopulation” is a capitalistic, social Darwinist talking point that’s used to take the blame off of corporations and over-bloated government initiatives, like the Department of Defense, who are the primary drivers of climate change. The places that are “overpopulated” and have high birth rates in the global south contribute far less to climate change than industrial superpowers do.

Most of the people I have talked to on this issue come back to wanting to make people "more responsible" and/or wanting women to stop "spreading their legs." There are plenty of people who just say they want to protect fetuses, but then if you point out that banning abortion doens't stop them it just makes them dangerous, they will say women deserve to be maimed or killed if they seek an illicit abortion.

@@Zenhumanist "Too many babies" Where? It would be really helpful if you had at least a basic understanding of a few really pertinent facts First, our whole capitalist system is based on the premise that for an American corporation to be successful, it must always show increased profits. The only ways that profits can keep increasing are if you sell ever more products to the same people, you sell the same level of products to more people, or drive down costs to increase profits. Most people don't need or want 20 alarm clocks, or 6 toasters, or 17 cars, etc. so there are very real limits to how far companies can go with selling more products to the same numbers of people. There are also limits to how much profits can be increased by cutting costs. Rents and building costs are not going to decrease. Most raw materials costs aren't going to decrease. Labor costs generally aren't going to decrease, unless companies are cutting their labor forces, and if lots of companies are doing that, it results in less people that can afford to buy their products. At some point costs can't be driven any lower without damaging quality or quantity of goods produced. That means that our capitalistic system in all practicality relies on an ever increasing population to purchase those goods and services. How is that going to happen when US birth rates are way down, and Republicans want to drastically reduce the amount of immigration to the US?

So if you're on Medicare, you better pay for your drug test every month, and if you have a positive - even a false positive - you lose your benefits for a year." It's an old fascist narrative that we have too many irresponsible undesirables consuming resources, so we need to depopulate the weak and stupid. It almost feels right considering climate change, but the data shows we can easily support a big population as long as resources are distributed more EVENLY. And population growth naturally levels off as communities gain access to education and stable income. In other words, invest in these communities instead of limiting their welfare.

@@dakunssd close, actually they're generally decent houses that need some work. If you are close enough to a town you get sewer and water access otherwise you need a septic tank and a well. Preferably not close together. There is no public transportation out here except for the CADC busses that take old people to the pharmacy, and we're in the Ouachita mountains so most of us don't have to worry about flooding. You nailed the main problem with the lack of jobs. There are four places to work in this town and three of them are family owned and operated. On the other hand we're at nearly 700 feet above sea level so it's a better long term bet than Florida...

Right? The least expensive houses in America tend to be in already de-populated rural areas where job prospects are pretty grim. Okay, so you can afford the house, but does this mean you can afford to have a child? I feel like the incredible surge in housing costs is probably the chief reason more women of childbearing age are delaying pregnancy or opting out of second and third pregnancies altogether. I think it was business journal that published a story about the pandemic creating a North American baby bust ( some economists thought the pandemic would results in at least a slight baby boom. Which makes sense in crises that are short-lived, such as power outages.) When they linked to the story on Twitter, they got ratioed by millennials yelling about isn't it responsible to delay or opt out of child rearing when you can't afford it? It was really fascinating.

Easiest way to bring the birth rate down? Deliver well funded and adequate education to more working class and poor populations. Provide regulation so women can have access to equal pay for equal work. Provide economic opportunities to communities so that people who want to grow in careers that bring meaning like medicine, social work, childcare, education and community service can. If you do this and provide free healthcare at the point of service so that more young girls have access to preventative care, you'll bring the birth rate down. Economic Opportunity through education will do it without punishing or regulating individual behaviors. Social regulation will just lead to backlash.

“If you own your own home…” You don’t own your home until the mortgage is paid off. The average US mortgage length is 30 years. So even if a 20 yr old purchases a home, as the caller is suggesting, they cannot have kids until they’re 50. The 2007 mortgage illustrates, ‘homeowners’ can easily become an unplanned 'financial risk’ as Matt was trying to allude to. They were priced out of their new mortgages rates and foreclosure occurred.
