I think with Thompson, you have to bear in mind that he took over during the height of ww2, when materials, staff and money was at an absolute premium. His decision to eschew the more maintenance intensive locos in place of comparatively simpler designs makes a lot of sense, particularly as everyone else was doing it too. The b1 for example was literally a parts bin loco that resulted in an excellent do anything loco that the lner had probably needed for two decades

I do like having a few large tank engines on my layout. I picked up one of these on Ebay for just £51. The cab roof comes off on mine. Not sure if it's supposed to, but it means it was easy to add a crew and you can see the cab detail really well. I think it also makes a nice contrast to my LMS Fowler class 4p 2-6-4 which has the gorgeous crimson lake livery. That one only cost me £42 on Ebay. The prototypes small driving wheels were to enable quicker acceleration on heavy suburban services where stop/start was more frequent, distances between stops was smaller and the time tables were more punishing. It was a trick employed a few times by various CME's of railway companies, unfortunately not always to the locomotive's benefit.

I have 67717 in BRITISH RAILWAYS apple green. Awesome loco, very powerful and fast, although I got it unboxed and with the back 2 buffers unsprung (was only £55 posted though). Completely agree that these are better than hornby's new models today. The "lamps" are actually small electric lights I think, which the headcode lamps are fitted on the irons above. I don't know much more than that, but Tornado and the Bulleid pacifics share this feature. It's a Westinghouse pump, although my guess is that it's used as a vacuum pump for vacuum-braked coaches in this case. A brief bit of research suggested the modernisation plan of 1955 called for the switch to air brakes rather than vacuum, so I don't think any steamers were ever fitted with air brake systems until recently (such as Sir Nigel Gresley hauling mk3s on the SVR a few weeks ago). Condensing gear is generally just pipework feeding from the smokebox area back into the loco's tanks. I'm not a Thompson hater (although yeah I despise his decision to rebuild the P2s and the first A1). Maybe the L1s were a success because they're basically an upsized V3 tank, although obviously the wearing out was a big issue. The B1s are nice too.

On the right hand side of the smoke box is a Westinghouse Air Compressor, and below that in front of the cylinder is a steam turbine generator known as a dynamo, and it's used to supply electricity for the lights and radios. The Hornby Pullman coaches have that overengineered coupling design as well, the bogies are quite prone to locking up on curves and gradients, maybe it's the same on most modern Hornby coaches? I do have some Roco/Fleischmann European coaches with similar kinematic couplings, but they function much better than Hornby's attempt lol.
@SamsTrains2 жыл бұрын
Yes so I've heard - that does sound very annoying! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@philkeller41702 жыл бұрын
The modern super detailed pullmans are fitted with a close coupling mechanism (CCM) designed to allow coaches to be buffer to buffer or gangway to gangway on straight track yet move the coaches apart when going round curves. The problem with CCMs are they DON’T WORK WITH TENSION LOCK COUPLINGS! Tension lock couplings have too much slop and as you note can easily cause derailments. It should be noted that in real life couching stock used screw link or buckeye couplers to pull stock tightly together- not slop Aaron d all over the place like goods wagons which used a basic 3 link coupling chain that is basically the equivalent of a tension lock coupling. The easy way to tell if a coach has a CCM is to see where the coupling is mounted. If the coupling is attached to the coach chassis and moves side to side on its own then it’s a CCM type. If the coupling is physically attached to the bogie and they both move together then you have an old fashioned mount ideal for tension lock couplings. If you have coaches with CCM fitted then you need to REMOVE THE TENSION LOCKS AND USE A RIGID COUPLING BAR! Examples of a ‘rigid coupling bar’ include Hornby’s copy (R8220) of a Roco design that is usually included in with the coaches, the genuine Roco original (handily a couple of mm shorter Hornby’s copy and which actually couples to Hornby’s copy as well), the ‘rigid vac pipes’ coupler Bachmann provide with their Mk1s or any of a whole host of aftermarket couplings including ones that couple using tiny magnets. Use these and derailment issues will stop.

@SamsTrains2 жыл бұрын
Yeah that's probably fair - though supposedly there are reasons why he didn't like Gresley... whether that's true or not, I don't know! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@hoskinb110 ай бұрын
There is absolutely no evidence that he didn't like or didn't get on with Gresley. He was Greley's assistant for many years. When Gresley died Thompson took over under extremely difficult circumstances with WW2 and a fleet of locos that needed additional maintenance requirements that would cause severe problems during the war with reduced manpower and reduced resources available. Thompson decided that simplification and standardisation were required to the ageing loco fleet and several older classes needed to be replaced. He undertook a series of rebuilds to get more years of use out of the best of the older locos and also needed to plan for new builds within the limited resources of the LNER. With hindsight he made a few errors, but he did produce the magnificent B1class. His pacific designs led the way for A Peppercorn to ultimately introducehis own A1 and A2 pacifics which were fine locos. Edward Thompson is much maligned but his contribution to the railway effort during the difficult conditions of WW2 should be recognised.

Here is an example of what Hornby can do when they decide to do a decent job. Besides the finish, the only things we can qualify as outdated are the lack of flywheel (detrimental to low-speed operations) and the 8-pins DCC decoder pin. Everything else is OK, especially the price you paid. I've got mine around the same pricetag in 2019. There is only small things easy to correct to have a nice 2022 model, and that won't justify a pricetag over GBP 150 RRP. As is, mine, same as yours, is a good engine to run. I put her on duty on branchlines with local mixed-trafic trains.

Lovely. Gorgeous as it is. No actual working lights would be very much forgiven for this one since she really looks fantastic. It seems that model shops still carry them in stock. E.g., Lord and Butler Model Railways at 139 GBP. Interestingly, too much satin or shine in our mind usually would be perceived here as plasticy. This sheen is exactly spot on and more serious to the prototype we thought. Die cast model locos usually don’t have too much satin and shine either and neither did the real steam locos. But of course it is on only on camera for us to see. Indeed much better what H delivers today but it was in a time when they were of course writing grave annual financial losses as well. But then, how they perform now certainly is bonkers… The fact that people just seem to keep buying them, really is puzzling. H and buyers are perhaps banking too much on H’s historic British institutional-like name… Can’t think of any other reason. But there you have it. Great review Sam.

I don't think Thompson was driven by any personal bias against Gresley, but rather was doing what he had to do during the difficult war years. For example, the P2s were rebuilt as A2/2 Pacifics because of how unreliable they were, and if memory serves the last few V2 class 2-6-2s were built under Thompson. I highly recommend watching Railway Mania's excellent interview with Simon Martin. It completely changed my view on Edward Thompson (his first name was NOT Henry, to correct a mistake I noticed in the video).
@Alpha-oo82 жыл бұрын
Thompson, what an interesting figure. After watching the podcast on him with Simon A.C Martin… seems that Thompson doesn’t deserve quite as much of the hatred that gets thrown his way. Maybe a bit, but nowhere near the level he gets. For instance, one of the reasons the P2 was rebuilt was because, well, they kept breaking down. Like they were only available like, 60% of the time. (My info may be wrong, I’m going from memory and may be misremembering) The P2 does have an error in it though, because the new built P2 is a modified design to correct the errors with the original.

The idea of the L1 would be to have a 2 cylinder passenger tank like LMS's 2-6-4 tanks. The LMS tanks had wheels of 5' 9" rather than the smaller wheeled 5' 3". The small wheels themselves should not have been a problem because the Ivatt and BR Standard class 4 2-6-0s had wheels of 5' 3" and they could produce a turn of speed and the LMS class 2s had 5' 0" wheels and the tanks could run at speed, were built around the same time as the L1s and operated till the end of steam and still run in presevation.

This has the stupid pony truck swivel design which can ride up on tight curves and cause derailments. It shares this with the 8F. Ive modified mine by lining up a spare hole at the front and using a self tapper screw it now has the central pivot swivel and runs correctly. Glad you are mentioning DCC fitting as most tank steam locos are a nightmare to fit and more often than not require hardwiring and removal of capacitors etc which interfere with the signal. As most of these models are generally aimed at adult collectors why the manufactures still feel the need to add these for telly suppression is beyond me. We are middling not watching telly!!! Why do so many Steam Locos not have working lamps on them? I can't imagine it would be that hard to put a couple of LED's in place for a few cents each.... I'd pay an extra couple of dollars for working lights.
@SamsTrains2 жыл бұрын
I think it's because lamps are supposed to be moved - and they're quite tricky to light, as typical LEDs are too large... so they'd probably have to be fibre optic! Thanks for watching, Sam :)

The small wheels would have given better acceleration on suburban passenger trains but more revolutions cause more ware and tear ! They were also losing out to DMU's so another reason for their short lives.
