We compare the picture quality of the Samsung Q80T QLED vs Sony XH95 (also marketed as the Bravia X950H in the USA) 4K LED TV in a side-by-side comparison. Aspects covered include local dimming, colour accuracy, motion, upscaling, screen uniformity, HDR, game mode, reflection handling and viewing angle.
If you'd like to support the work we do on this channel, we've started a Patreon here:
/ hdtvtest
Both 2020 TVs are 55 inches in screen size which retails for £1599 in the UK at launch, model number Samsung QE55Q80T and Sony KD-55XH9505 respectively.
Note: From 7:22 to 8:11 during the HDR luminance heatmap comparison, the source footage exhibited greyer blacks and more shadow detail than the filmed footage of the televisions. This is because the source footage was captured in HDR10 PQ (perceptual quantisation) and then rendered in SDR for this video, not to mention our camera didn't have enough dynamic range to capture all the shadow detail from the TV screens. In other words, the heatmap analysis is only valid for brightness above 100 nits owing to how it was conducted.
Thanks to Richer Sounds Manchester for sponsoring this video. If you're thinking about buying a new TV, even if it's not the Samsung Q80T or Sony XH9505, please support this channel by considering buying from them. Call 0333 900 0086, mention HDTVTest, and you'll receive great price and service.

Man... I have to thank you so much for this, not necessarily because I'm stuck in choosing between the both brands, that's besides my point. But for doing this and going through all the research and the quality of making these videos! Obviously you're not making it for free, but it makes me happy seeing people like you who are passionate about stuff that the majority of people either take for granted or don't care about at all! Haha thanks for coming to my ted talk, great video! :)

Hey Vincent, for a while I've been wondering if my Samsung Q7FN was broken, but now you answered me. Their game mode definitely reduces image quality and elevates blacks, I see the exact same results as you, even though they're 2 years apart. More than that, Samsung's backlight fluctuations can be really bothering when playing games. It happened on Red Dead Redemption 2 and GTA V mostly at night. I initially thought it could a game engine issue, but now I am almost sure it is Samsung algorithm messing up the backlight level. It tries to be smart and keep the picture contrast on optimized levels, but in my experience it never "decides" for low or high backlight and ends up being a complete mess.

AT the beginning of the video, you discussed blooming. Yes, the actual area of blooming around the white boxes was less on the Samsung, but it raised the black level of the entire screen when two boxes were on the screen. The Sony's bloom around the boxes was larger, but the screen stayed black pass the blooming area. I'd rather have that then have the black level of the entire screen raise up like on the Samsung.

Are you going to review the Q70T? If you do then I would recommend that you make a video about why a FALD TV is better than the Edge lit model of the Q70T, even though it has a high native contrast ratio without the use of FALD. The video also could focus on if a high native contrast ratio edgelit TV has an advantage for game mode when compared to a FALD set, since it doesn't have to worry about any dimming algorithms getting in the way of 10 Ms input lag. Thanks for the professional review videos.

What’s interesting is that Samsung’s more aggressive local dimming must cut into QLED greater color luminance. Both these sets are lackluster for the money though. Seems like LEDs are a worse value this year, now that they’re pushing 8k. While OLED will never have less dimming zones while going down in price, LEDs can cut corners lol.

10:04 On my Q8FN it is possible to fix the de-saturation problem. I can confirm with my Q8FN that Game Mode is pretty drastically de-saturated, but then I can also enable "Contrast Enhancer" to raise HDR brightness to practically match Movie Mode. Of course I'm fairly certain that "Contrast Enhancer" throws any hope of using a calibrated image out the window, and Game Mode still has the issues with black crush, but I believe Samsung's contrast problems in Game Mode are mostly a firmware calibration issue and not an actual processing limitation. Excluding the Black Crush problem, blooming control behaves identically in Game Mode and Movie Mode.

Vincent, just a quick thank you for your expertise. I have had my 65 LG C9 since Thursday. I have never seen a picture like it, totally exotic. Coming from a Samsung 60 H7000 HD TV which has been faultless, I was conflicted about which to choose. The LG C9 or a Samsung Q90R. @@Kuranghi Hi there, RE: Richer Sounds, Samsung good for bright rooms, vibrant colours and for me, I have a lot of other Samsung products, phone, tablet, soundbar etc so may be an easy choice. LG, better, richer picture, more future proof ( important to me, no sooner than I buy something it's being replaced with something else!) Unlikely but potential burn in. My experience since I set it up Thursday, I've never seen tv like it. It's ok seeing the demos in store but living with it is totally different. Coming from HD LCD to OLED 4K is nothing short of sensational. Having so many connected services is brilliant. To anyone I say, watch some of the new Lion King movie on one if you need convincing.

@@omairbinenam6337 I don't think anyone is willingly going to play games on a CRT except for Smash players or playing legacy consoles. You can be better than your current competition though. Judging by this video the input lag isn't upp to par with other good gaming TVs. Having much lower input lag, 120Hz at 4k with VRR, Freesync and G-sync while still maintaining good picture quality and good HDR. Pretty much everyone is looking at LG CX models for gaming right now. Not having those eyes looking at a Sony set is a massive missed opportunity for their PS5 launch. I do hope that the Sony A9 48" OLED is on par with the LG CX 48" and priced competitively.

It's just too niche a market. Not a lot of people will specifically buy a TV just to play games or even care that much about a few milliseconds input lag anyway.

Leopold There are a couple of reasons for this. The big one is that HDMI 2.1 devices (besides a handful of 2019/2020 TVs) still aren’t on the market. 4K120 just isn’t something that will be mainstream in the near future. By the time 4K120 is anywhere close to being mainstream people will be buying a new 2025/2026 TV with built-in ATSC 3.0 tuners. It will only be useful for high-end PC gamers when the 3080ti and newer are available and that’s only if the 3080ti has 2.1. Most people don’t have $1200 GPUs and they never will. It’s easy for Sony to save money since it really doesn’t affect the majority of buyers. The most important feature from 2.1 for TVs/home theater use is eARC and 2.1 isn’t needed to implement it.
@gavin4711
@gavin4711 4 жыл бұрын
But it does. Check the spec sheets from Sony on both the 900H and 950H you see that they both have an HDMI 2.1 input with VRR?

It is very hard for consumer to tell the difference in term of picture quality because very few ppl can compare them side by side at home. Am I the only one cares more about controls? How fast it response to control? How well it work with apple tv? How reliable it works with external speaker? What feature it has for daily use? I thinks those are the differences that consumer can tell everyday without have multiple of them comparing side by side. And I think those are more important factors that will affect the user's experience and those are more likely to be the key factor when I choose a TV among these brands. And I assure you even the newest top of line TVs have space to improve in those aspects. So please, spend some time go over those factors.

As usual a great comparison test. Thanks to this video I just purchased a Sony 55 HX90 for my main bedroom. In our living room we have a Samsung 85 inches that i really love but the natural colours of the Sony and the detail retrieval in dark areas that this TV is spot on at is really better than the Samsung. As can be seen watching the video. Attention must be given to the settings in the Sony otherwise some artifact might emerge with deep black areas.

@@leigh_4063 Well if they removed the viewing angle tech it might have improved blacks I think, makes sense. The reason I think it won't compete contrast and blooming wise is if I compare my ~646 zone FALD to my flatmate ~96 zone FALD its like night and day for blooming. I don't know if algorithm improvements can counter the loss of zones, "software zones" sometimes do more harm than good to the image imo. But best to wait and see for definite like you are, cheers mate.
