The long-awaited 2021 models are making their way through our doors and into our testing rooms. Among those we've tested are the Neo QLEDs from Samsung's lineup: the QN85A and the QN90A. We'll focus on the QN90A in this video, but we can't help but make some comparisons to the QN85A as they're both from the same TV lineup. Samsung is now using a Mini-LED backlight to improve contrast on their newest models. These are the first Samsung TVs to utilize Mini-LED, and we found this TV, in particular, to perform well across the board.

I’m SO great full for your written review on your website. I’m from the UK and that last paragraph at the bottom stating that our equivalent is the QN94A saved me from purchasing the wrong TV! We have one over here called the QN90A as well, no idea what equivalent model that is to the US.. but it has an IPS panel and doesn’t have 120hz to name a few.
@Da-iken
@Da-iken 2 жыл бұрын
The QN90A also have 120HZ. One HDMI 2.1 like the QN91+4. Yes QN90A here has ADS but it looks very good. In daytime and normal lit room it looks better than the VA (look for a comparison with public tech instance). Deeper blacks (ironic) because of the darker layer while the VA versions has a more greyish look and a rainbow effect. The ADS has a bit more blooming specially from an angle and in a dark room. But on the other hand no black smearing and better colors (they look more punchy). And with the higher number of dimming zones and higher peak brighntess than the QN85A it is also really OLED like (792 zones on 65 inch for example).

@5:39 Losing stars is not afaik an example of 'black crush' but rather a symptom of over aggressive back light dimming (which can cause black crush i.e. losing the levels of grey/black in the darkest areas of a scene). Bit of a pedantic point and a very good review but just wanted clarity about how the set deals with dark details in dark areas rather than bright spots in dark areas.
@mainsource8030

and thats exactly the point they were making, as thats why you get black crush, sony uses a less agressive algorithm and has less crush
@GIChow
@GIChow 2 жыл бұрын
@@mainsource8030 not sure about considering them equivalent since from my experience OLEDs won't lose stars (keeps specular highlights) but may still crush blacks since they look so dim especially with HDR content and where I've had to turn up the brightness to see what's going on so black becomes grey and one loses the usp of OLED technology. BTW I realise this is not an OLED set but just saying they are two different aspects of picture quality and to test black crush they should use dark detail in a dark scene and not bright spots in a dark scene.

Great review! there's great potential in QLED technology. This TV looks amazing in terms of aesthetics. I love how the stand makes the TV frame look as though it is suspended in the air, while giving us enough room to place a Soundbar at the base. Now that this TV (65 inch), along with the LG C1 and the Sony A80J are all listed at around $2,200, it's gonna come down to personal preference and/or viewing habits. I love watching sports in bright daylight (Samsung's QLED), but nothing beats watching a movie or a TV show in a dimly lit room (LG, Sony OLED). It's a difficult choice , I hope to see some side-by-side comparisons. The Sony A90J would be the ideal choice, but it costs an extra $1,600 though. Anyways, I really enjoy these reviews--great insights.

For your advanced gaming review I really wish you'd also focus on (and grade accordingly) the lack of multiple HDMI 2.1 ports. These TV's are quite expensive but are worthless for people with a PS5 and an Xbox Series X (or PC), especially in light of the issues with HDMI 2.1 receivers. For me, this TV is out on that reason alone and I also have issue with the A90J having its second HDMI 2.1 port being the eARC port. Refuse to pay these astronomical prices and still not be able to use quality speakers and multiple gaming consoles all at the same time. For customers like me, taking into consideration these issues would be awesome. I have to consume a lot of my own data and time because reviews overlook these nuances.

What kind of downgrade in score do you believe having only 1 hdmi 2.1 would justify? It sucks there's only 1, but most tvs have 0. You also make up a very small percentage of people that even require 2.1 nevermind needing more than 1. And not for nothing ps5 doesn't really have any games that run at 120fps so it's never going to really require it.

Shopping TVs now and almost no one offers a full set of 2.1 ports outside of LG. BUT in researching the QN90a I found out that all of the hdmi ports support auto low latency and variable refresh rate on the new consoles. The only difference is that the full 2.1 port is the only one that can do 4k 120fps. So for me who has no interest in the compromises made to hit 120fps on a console, this works great for the next gen systems. For me, Allm and vrr were the two things that mattered and they’ll work across all 4 port on most of this years Samsung TVs.

Any "real world" test with a CABLE BOX to see how motion actually is when viewing? Last years Q80T's had ridiculous judder and stutter in real world viewing. It would be nice to know this information before buying a Neo Qled and then having to go through a ton of trouble to return it, if the issues are the same.

I purchased this TV after seeing many a rave review (RTings, CNET, etc.) I will say for most content this TV performed as advertised. HDR movies from my Apple TV looked great, HOWEVER when watching sports I noticed during football games that the football would basically disappear when thrown horizontally across the screen. I began to play with every video setting I possibly could, and regardless the issue persisted. I can't even imagine trying to watch hockey. If this was a budget TV I could live with the issue, but for an alleged top of the line option, this was unacceptable. I bought a budget 4K TV, and did not have the same issue.

I know I’m unrealistic but I really thought that the QN90A would score significantly better than the 2019 Q90R… in terms of latency it seems to be quite better than the Q90R, but it seems only marginally better in several other areas But due to people price-gouging the remaining 2019 Q90R, it’s looking like the QN90A will be my choice in a few months by default (+/- $2k at Best Buy currently versus between $2,300 - $2,500+ for the 2019 Q90R on Amazon and other e-tailers) I would hold greater consideration for OLED’s but I just don’t want any possible risk of burn-in from gaming menu’s, channel banners/logo’s or HUD’s… For $1,500+ for a top-model set, I need it to last for at least 10yrs to justify the price. I’d be all-in on OLED if not for the burn-in risk, even if it’s not that high, it’s higher than I’m willing to risk. I love Cartoon Network, Comedy Central and older menu-based RPG’s, but not enough to have their static images retained in a pricey TV screen

For SDR content, there are four preset picture modes. We recommend choosing the 'Movie' picture mode, as it is the most accurate one out of the box, and allows for the most customization. From the Expert Settings menu, we recommend leaving the Contrast at '45,' and Sharpness at '0.' We also left Color at the default value of '25,' and Tint (G/R) at '0.' Finally, we chose the 'Warm2' Color Tone, as it was closest to our calibration targets. We set the Gamma to '2.2,' as that is closest to our calibration target. To make the image brighter in SDR, you should adjust the Brightness setting depending on your specific viewing conditions. Changing this setting does not have any impact on the overall picture quality. Samsung has renamed the Backlight setting found on previous generations, and removed the previous Brightness setting.

I had this TV replaced 3 times, finally been refunded. They all had the same problem, you can see where the 4 panels of mini LEDS at the back join, making there be a while vertical line from top to bottom. The 3rd set I was sent also had a horizontal line all the way accross but it wasn't as visible as the vertical one. The line is mainly visible when watching something where the screen pans, or if you are a gamer. For the price I expect the quality to be better. Samsung's excuse was they didn't have time to quality check the panels due to COVID, so instead of holding back the release date they just started selling them. Hopefully nobody else has these issues but as all 3 had the problem I don't hold out hope

@@vicoled5114 he is for sure a clown but he isn't returning the a90j he's returning the x90j led form Sony he's doing stress tests with gaming to see how long the a90j lasts but yes he's a clown and idk how people still believe him guy had an old channel that got banned yet so many don't know this he was caught in so many lies thw reason he calls his channel honest is because he was caught in so many lies and he has to convince others and himself that he's telling thw truth anybody that says they are honest as much as him usually aren't honest lol you don't have to convince people when you are it's just logic man

@@ewcho8995 You're right, but most people watch TV during the day as well and/or with ambient light. In those scenarios, OLED may not be the best for everyone as they can barely get half as bright as a TV like this one. I agree with you that in a light controlled room or late at night, OLED can strut its stuff, but some prefer brighter HDR pop.

I'm looking at the 50" version. What differences are expected with it being an ips panel instead of a va. I would expect better viewing angles no?

On an IPS panel, you can expect it to have worse uniformity and contrast, but better viewing angles. We have more details here if you're interested: www.rtings.com/tv/learn/ips-led-vs-va-lcd

This is true. It was justified unofficially to lower the price point but comparable Sony models often beat the Samsung by several hundred dollars. LG typically beats them in price at least.

Yeah true, but the QN90A could be the best LCD TV finally. I will get the QN95A with the one-connect box
