There are certain black level fanatics out there like me and PlasmaTV for gaming... I returned the S95B because I have a sun drenched living room and the screen was grey with ambient light. I picked up a 77inch C2 and love it. Yes it's mirror like but The screens black levels remain inky deep regardless of lighting conditions thus increasing my perceived contrast ratio.

Move over S95D the G4 is pushing that out the way this year no doubt

Just purchased 77’ S95C, because of better audio (in combination with sammy soundbar) and better brightness (mainly highlights). I have not experienced any dropouts so far, running 144hz, 4k hdr and gsync. I have to say, that screen is perfectly fine for me in moderate bright living room. Main issue is, that as long as sun does not shine on the screen directly, you cant see the pink/grey tint… loving the bright specular highlights and contrast of the oled as compared to my previous owned QN90A

Best anti reflective trick is to mount a tv a tiny bit high and angle it down to your main seating position. Worked wonders for my A80L

Get the S89C or S90C while you can. Samsung Electronics could mess up a wet t-shirt with a Supersoaker, ie S95D. Matte, same OCB, and no upgraded processor. There was a lot to love about the S95B but with a repair two months in and feeling like a Beta tester with all the FW updates - I don’t have much trust in them as a consumer anymore.

Your description confirms my concerns about this, making me feel good about my Sony X90CL, even compared to their X95L with multi-angle coating. I forget if the X93L also uses that coating. Being that anti reflective and/or multi-angle coating alters the image from what a panel is capible of producing, I would rather either the panel be bright like my Sony X90CL or use the display in a dark environment like I did with my Samsung PN43F4500 plasma, in either case, looking at it from the center. If Samsung's third-generation QD-OLED is brighter, they should sell the S95D in an anti reflective version AND a glossy version so WE could choose according to OUR preferences and viewing requirements.

24:28 "We will measure" I don't think color meters are going to capture the effect of a matte screen though because every color meter that I've seen rests directly no the screen, specifically because measuring the screen from the surface eliminates glare, so the color meter inherently cannot measure the effect of the screen coating. Any direct comparisons of color saturation between matte vs. glossy needs to be done with a photograph of the screen to specifically include the effect of ambient reflections.

Some of the more premium Hisense and TCL LCD TVs 2024 have nice glossy Panels.. They just look so much better..

Im used to matte texture on my computer monitors. Even my TV has a matte finish, but its a 2008 LCD HDTV. Never tried a glossy screen though. But man, everyone seems to prefer it!

X-wide at the cost of contrast fixed va off angle color shifting. The trade off was worth it since being off angle with large screens was pretty much a given. 3500:1 vs 7000:1 blacks were not such a huge gulf vs real blacks on OLED. The matte of the s95d will definitely make the blacks look more consistent in a lit room but in a dim or dark room it's going to kill the PQ.

I am actually looking forward to this tv for a bright room where one wall has a huge window with another huge arched window on top....

For Samsung to put everyone in the same matte boat is very inconsiderate. Why couldn't they make two variants... A glossy and a matte variant of the S95D

I could actually have a use case for a matte finished QD-OLED. The things that makes a QD-OLED a must have for me are the color gamut and color volume that approach BT.2020 and reproduce colors that are impossible with LCD or WOLED, most which are limited to either Rec. 709, Adobe RGB, or DCI-P3. I am not too impressed by higher brightness, so I consider it lower priority than color volume and accuracy. Contrast is important, but not as important as color volume and gamut to me. With a matte finish, inbound light will get scattered, so less light should penetrate the panel and excite the red and green quantum dots and therefore trade getting blacks being raised with white instead of blacks being raised with the quantum dots colors and the base OLED materials’ colors. I think that if the blacks have to be raised by something, I would prefer white over colored light. Third, I prefer to watch a TV in the dark, but my mother wants everywhere to be practically sun-drenched from all angles and will loudly complain if that is not the case, and will not stop complaining until I watch a show that she likes with her if she comes to my home. I can make the picture out on a matte screen when light is blasting from all angles, but that would be impossible with a glossy screen. I do wonder how much the black is raised by light from the screen being scattered by the matte finish especially in a dark room, though, and whether it bothers me. The biggest potential dealbreaker with the S95D is the One Connect box. If the One Connect box crashes, blacks out, or has trouble accepting common high speed HDMI signals, the S95D will be useless to me because instability ruins the TV watching or video game playing experiences.

An oled isn't an oled if the blacks are raised...might as well just buy an LCD/LED Tv instead.

Brian, I've been watching your channel for over a year now. I have a dark room 15' x 24' and i would like the best tv for this room for gaming and movies. I originally purchased the x93l and just returned it based off the knowledge i've gained from yours and Fomo's reviews. I want a 83" to 85" that would suit this room best. I can't afford the A95l since i bought the Nakamichi Dragon. I know you love your A80l and it looks fricken amazing, especially when you're using a gaming pc. Would the A80l be my best bet ? Or maybe a X95l in Cinema mode or using a custom calibration? Or is there something better for the price range ? I will not buy TCL or Hisense, only Sony 1st or Samsung 2nd, maybe LG. I don't really want to wait for the A95m or the S90D. I appreciate you and love your work. Thanks brother. While I have always swore by a Glossy screen, I bought the 65" Sony A80J. I have to be real. If someone hadn't told me it was matte vs glossy, um, I never noticed. I felt like the picture was so good, after calibration, that honestly did Not know it wasn't a glossy screen.

Those reflections on the glossy left TV makes a TV useless, best panel on the market doesnt help if you can see your reflection in the screen, it is ludacrious. Samsung understands the consumers, I am really thankful. Great work with the S95d. The Q90 already had a very good anti glare, the S95d I will consider to buy for sure!

Personally, I'm SUPER excited for the matte finish. I tweeted out a photo to Brian/FOMO this past week as I have a TERRIBLE living room that is sun drenched. I think this would allow me to put in an OLED and be able to view it somewhat OK during the day. I have a glossy and matte computer monitors and don't have a strong preference either way. If I get the 95D and I hate it, I can always return it. I am super pumped to see it.

I'm sorry but matte screens should never be allowed on OLED tv's. In my opinion it IS a step back and why Samsung is doing it is beyond me. The Contrast Ratio is taking a hit no doubt but Samsung don't seem to care. But according to Fomo Samsung cant do no wrong so for him it's ok so no shocker there. Samsung is shifting their focus to Mini LED and AI so why bother at this point? They can have it.

I think among the less rabid TV enthusiasts. I wouldn't be surprised the matte finish is a big hit. Especially for people having it in living rooms etc. They want the OLED but they cannot handle the mirror effects and reflections all the time. Late in the evening and less lights on I bet it would look pretty darn black as usual as an OLED and colors etc are there. So for those people that have constraints with the room etc. It would be the thing that becomes the best of both worlds for daytime and night time. It wasn't shown in a dark room at CES right? Only with bright simulated windows etc to show it's anti glare capability. So no one saw how it looked in a dark room. It could actually look really good. There wouldn't be any light shining on it to cause grey blacks. It would be deep as usual and colorful. Samsung wouldn't do this without first checking out demographics of buyers etc. It is interesting though why they didn't try it out on step down model first? But I guess then the argument would be if it proves popular people would complain that "this great feature isn't on the flagship". I say I would reserve my judgement until I would see it in a dark room or light controlled room. But for me it's all about Sony new backlight MiniLED. If that somehow doesn't happen. Its G4 that has my attention.

Matte is great. There is no penalty on dark room. Just gets rid of reflections and wet look of screen during dayrime. Of course you don't don't need to like it. Plenty of options in mirror like OLED.

Mat screens look dreadful, all they do is lower the contrast, flat on the image quality...

LOVE the matte FRAME but it is not FALD and black bars suffer and not bright enough - bring me the 85" S95D matte and I buy it !

Is S90D anti-reflective as well?

It's strange to me how people in the comments seem to be saying they will miss the inky blacks of the previous models. QD OLED only has "inky" blacks when there is no ambient light. S95B/C both had raised blacks as soon as there's any ambient light in the room. I wonder how the S95D will actually compare in that regard.

I had my eyes set on the S90C until I realized that its stand would not allow me to place a soundbar in front of it because of the entertainment center it would have went on. If I could set a soundbar on top of the TV legs then maybe. But the legs slope! I would need to spend time and money on a wall mount or VESA stand for me to accommodate this TV. And the value is lost right there. Sadly, this dealbreaker goes for the even cheaper S89C.

S95D is finally addressing the biggest issue with the modern TVs that was ignored by industry for so long!!! Brian should just watch the TV behind him and see for himself how that reflection of a lit doughnut is totally destroying that demo... matte is the answer! Never-mind - FOMO made the same comment about Brian's reflections on his TV.

Great work as always you two my only concern on the glossy vs matte is that FOMO brought up we have choices other than the s95d. This is true for now but what happens if the other brands follow the market leader Samsung and we end up with all matte with no choice. Reminds me of pc monitors it’s very difficult to find a true glossy monitor today. Glossy all the way for me let’s hope we always have a choice. Your closing argument Brian was spot on nice 👍

Innovation for brighter rooms , disaster for darker rooms ,, but thats fine s90d is available - with similar brightness and processor ,,, only problem is not all panels will be 3rd generation and i hate gambling 🙂 but iam fine with s95d matt screen as i don't care about perfect black for now _ iam gonna have perfect black and color accuracy on qdel in the future so let that be a future upgrade / for now iam after a better overall display ; but anyone wanting samsung and don't want matt screen and gambling with s90d better wait for 2025 its gonna be big upgrade anyway .

I’m going to say this again here in case Microsoft or Sony read this. Why aren’t the consoles used as AI upscalers? They clearly excel at doing that for games so they could as easily do it for streaming content especially if the Nvidia Shield Pro with a Tegra X1+ can achieve results that most TVs cannot touch.

Disaster here is my opinion, I used to have the LG CX and C1 but the light reflected so bad on the screen of both that I had to return them not to mention the black crush, I have the S95B and it handles reflections very good I don't understand why they went for a Matte Finish if the S95B, S90C & S95C have decent reflection handling.

It's just a matte film, and I use it on my smartphone, it's good, but it's not an innovation. In fact, it's such a simple thing that we wonder why they hadn't even done it.

Some people like glossy because they look dope when turned off, but they suck with reflections when in use. Similarly some people like 22 inch rims on their cars because "they look dope" but when riding on 22 inch, the quality of the ride just sucks over regular bumpy roads.

Samsung always, and i mean always gears their products towards selling a many units as possible. It's all they care about. I realize that this is the goal of all manufacturers but Samsung will actually make their products worse if it means they will have a marketable feature that's easily advertised, will draw in consumers who don't know anything and generally just sound good. They didn't put a mat finish on the S95d because they thought it would improve picture quality, they knew it wouldn't, they did it because it is a feature that will make for good commercials and will sound good to the average consumer when it rolls off the salesman's tongue at their local Bestbuy. It's the same reason why they boosted the brightness and color artificially on their first gen oleds and it's why I'll most likely never buy a tv from them.

I've been sitting here for about 5 minutes trying to "make it make sense" and I can't.

Interesting point FOMO - it could act as frame TV but… why would Samsung create a flagship TV to act as a frame? I didn’t like first gen QD oled because of lack of polarizer and raised blacks in any light - that looks like VA panel. LG OLEDs have the lowest perceivable blacks because of polarizer, and that’s been measured and documented. Now A95L, as mentioned by Brian, mitigates that to some acceptable level. But Matte OLED?! Seriously biggest flop I’ve seen. That won’t be a financial success - people have eyes and they will see tremendous contrast loss. Maybe that’s the point? Maybe Samsung wants people to compare it with 900D or other mini LEDs - so they can say see the blacks here are actually deeper than OLEDs. It’s not a secret they make more money on LEDs and as long as you don’t compare them to OLEDs people can enjoy. I do think this year will be a battle between X95R and G4, which the latter will win no doubt. Samsung forfeited just like that.

i have a pitch black room tvs should be for movies and tv shows. screw gaming i dont want a matte screen. clarity will go down on a matte screen ( just like pc monitors. )

Massive disappointment on the s95d. I hope Samsung is truthful about the s90d, and I hope it can be made to be just as bright. The s95d had such potential to be the enthusiast champ..and now it will be recommended by no one who actually knows what they're talking about. I guess we are a small community but I do think gamers make up a decent chunk of the market Console gamers will be at 144hz by the end of the hear. Full fat hdmi boards are finally available and the mid cycle refresh consoles will certainly be able to drive 144hz between having full bandwidth and relying on frame generation for newer titles. I'm a PC gamer, but don't dismiss 144hz as a PC feature. Consoles, and any hdmi 2.1 device can, and will, do 144hz

The S95C had a lot already, but I was expecting to get finally Dolby vision, better audio and new processor with the S95D. The S95D instead delivers something I wasn’t missing at all. It’s a shame Samsung doesn’t make the qd oled shine for me.

This is a tragedy its not really an oled tv anymore cus of the matte screen, they ruined the whole point of oled its going to have significantly worst quality then last years tv. Also whats the point of 144hz when u cant actually do it because of the shlt connect box another reason this tv sucks. Well hopefully they listen and we get a s90d with the same display, quality, brightness, without the shit connect box and the matte screen.
