San Diego Freeway Tour - Highways 54, 125, 56 and 163 - March, 2020 - 2020/03/06

Drivelapse video of the Freeways of San Diego, starting along I-5 at the Mexican Border at San Ysidro and then heading northerly to the SR-54 interchange. The video follows SR-54 easterly where the carriageways straddle Sweetwater Creek and then continues northerly along SR-125. The video follows SR-125 north to the end at SR-52, it the follows that westerly before turning south on SR-163 and heading intown Downtown San Diego.

Thanks for this vid man. I remember when I first visited California on a road trip with my fam driving down 15 from Vegas, and we took 163 to downtown. That stretch southbound past I-8 is still one of my faves 13 years later. That was also the first time (after driving through downtown to Harbor Drive) that I saw an ocean. Fond memories of that trip because of that stretch. Thanks.

Awesome drive. Never seen a double yellow for the shoulder striping before, but California's got their color palette right: asphalt shoulders, concrete mainline, and of course the contrast skip lines. The scenery never gets old in California!

That's a lot of weaving on SR-125. The approach to San Diego on SR-163 looks beautiful, like driving through a park!

Hwy 125 has a really odd alignment where the east-west roads keep turning into Hwy 125. And you're right, the approach to San Diego is beautiful. Thanks for the comment.

CA-54, CA-125 and CA-52 sure form a controlled access beltway around the southern portion of San Diego. That's nice. Also, didn't you know, US 80, US 101 and US 395 used to connect San Diego? Those parts were decomissioned in 1964 and there are no remaining US Numbered Highways connecting San Diego and they're replaced by Interstates and state routes. Former US 80 in CA = I-8 Former US 101 in CA = I-5 between Mexican border and East L.A. Interchange (miles 0 to 133) Former US 395 in CA = CA-163 (entirely) and I-15 miles 12 to 141

Thanks for the comment. I am aware of the previous US routes that formerly ran through San Diego. It's been a while since I edited it and watched it, but I believe next week's video references some of the former US routes in the area.

Great video! Have you seen elevated expressway network in Japan, China, Philippines, Indonesia, and Thailand? This is very common in urban areas where the traffic volume and the destiny of the city is high such as Manila, Tokyo, Beijing, Shanghai, Jakarta, Bangkok, and so on. Not sure Toronto doesn't have elevated expressway (sans Gardiner Expressway) to reduce traffic congestion.

Wait a minute. Last year, at the beginning of this video, you left Baja California, Mexico and crossed the US border to California via MX Fed. 1 or 1D and I-5. That's the only way to start filming I-5's southern terminus heading northbound. Did you do anything last in Mexico before crossing back to the US? Correction: It was the last southern exit of I-5.

Thanks for the comment. I did not visit Mexico on this trip (I have never visited Mexico). This video started from the southernmost on-ramp to I-5 still in California.

8:44 we use JCT 163 south To drop my mother to work to Scripps mercy using University avenue and then use the sharp left turn back to JCT 163 North to Escondido and Use ISR-8 east to El Centro and use I-805 back and forth and use Imperial avenue.If you do not know what do you mean by (ISR-8 East to El centro)it mean (Interstate state Route 8 East to El centro. Correction:IR-8 East to El centro.(Interstate route 8 East to El centro

"at one point SR-54 had carpool lanes but these lanes were converted to GPLs due to low usage". Imagine. Maybe one day the Ontario government will do that with the 412 and the 418. Great vid AP.

Most of the time I just do these drives for fun. Occasionally, I'll be somewhere for work, but most of the time I just do this as a hobby. Thanks for the comment.

Thanks for the comment. I didn't cross the border at the beginning of this video. That's just the first northbound on-ramp to I-5.
