I AM CHANGING MY SHEEP PROGRAM. Not a big change, but one that I maybe wouldn't have researched a bit more if I hadn't been called out by a negative comment.
Hoof trimming over this past year has been a struggle. Not in the way that I've neglected to do it... but that I now realize they weren't scheduled frequently enough.
So today, is day one of a new system.
I am going to do better..
I also share with you my vaccination protocol, but ALWAYS design your own with your vet as every farm battles different health issues. So this program may not work for your sheep.

I’m so glad you got the new system of holding the ewe/ram. The old unit is a hard unit to use and you expend a lot of effort and energy in using it. I’m not a sheep person/farmer (?) but I’m learning a lot in watching your video logs. I apologize for those others that are harassing you. It’s not needed. (Consider the source.)

I’m a sheep farmer from the U.K. and it’s recommended to only hoof trim once a year, as it can spread hoof rot etc when done to often, it’s recommended to put sheep on a hard standing area for a bit, to let them naturally wear them down. I can’t do that though so I do mine every 3 months, as I’m on soft ground, then I run them through a natural foot bath. So basically what I’m saying is you have to do what is right for you and your sheep, dark hoofed sheep hooves grow slower than light hoofed sheep, so you will always find some need to be done and others don’t. All I will say is don’t do them when they are heavily pregnant, I do them 3 months before lambing and then after the lambs are born. You are so good to your sheep Sandi, don’t beat yourself up, you are not failing them, look how happy they are.

Being on pasture may be better for hoof growth, but if you don't do rotational or mob grazing, then you are more prone to hoof rot. Your sheep may be on soft pack, but it is dry and clean. Some of your sheep feet might be overgrown, but not rotten. It's hard taking criticism when you work and care as much as you do. Thanks for being so transparent and honest. Your are a breath of fresh air.

Im in almost the same situation. Im a stay at home mom of 4, Im 34, BIG city born & raised and I found Sandi during her December lambing when she popped up in my recommended videos for a lamb that need help with its leg I believe. I watched an it made me curious to watch more from her. I then watched all the previous december lambing videos and Ive watched every video since lol. My husband has even watched a bunch an now follows Mark (Sandis hubby). I love animals and this kind of farming is intriguing to me since here in the city we dont get to ever experience how this process works.

Same here, it feels comforting, as even though ill never be a commercial farmer, seeing the trial, error, positivity, and the outcomes of any commercial flock can be overwhelming, i feel like thats why sooo many left farming... but then we lost touch with the very people that allow us to enjoy meals of all types...

My grandfather died when I was a month old, as I have said before, he was a sheep farmer, when I was a child my gran showed me the 'scissors' that he used for shearing and hoof trimming. They looked like a pair of scissors but the handle was metal which went from one blade round to the other. Gran said that grandad would go home with hands full of blisters from the friction of the metal. Sandi, you have learned something so don't be so hard on yourself. Just take it on the chin and carry on kid ❤

One thing I love about you and your sheep is that it is not a “job” but a life/lifestyle. It seems so holistic that the sheep are simply are part of your life ... you take care of them and they take care of you.

I would like to know why some people can't seem to show kindness when stating their opinions on whatever topic they have a disagreement on.I also want to know when the trend will return on women uplifting other women.I was taught both of those things as a child.Whether there is truth to the hooves being trimmed every few months or not...nobody has the right to deliver the message in any other way but kindness and compassion.I digress. I remember how tiring it was just trimming a herd of 40 goats by hand. One thing that may help that we switched to was the Electric Hoof Knife. It can be a little daunting at first but once you get the hand of it, it was a life saver or more so hand saver! Love your videos, thank you for being an amazing ag ambassador!

Just because my four year degree enables me to function at a particular level doesn’t mean it will always be sufficient! I am always learning ; always growing! Whether through formal education or life experiences, learning is a must! What I knew a year ago vs what I will know tomorrow doesn’t mean I have been doing things wrong! Something I love about this is that you know all of their personalities. Like you have a crap ton of sheep and can still pick out babies 4 months down the way and can pick up on their behavioral patterns so well with the amount of stuff you have going on!

As a farm student, I have to commend you for changing your routine to include more hoof trims, shows you genuinely care about your sheep’s comfort. I’ve only trimmed sheep’s hooves once and I HATED IT, the way the farm set it up made it incredibly difficult (we had to round them up and pin them against the pens gates while someone else trimmed their hooves) it was very frightening for me as I was terrified of cutting myself and the farm hands just watched us and laughed at us students without giving us hardly any pointers.

Hi, Don't be so hard on yourself, every sheep system has advantages and disadvantages that need constant readjustment. My grandparents were involved with sheep farming virtually their whole lives and the overriding maxim was learn, adjust and evaluate. I am amazed at the lack of foot problems you have overall - rainy wet pastures lead to a lot of foot rot with lame sheep hidden under some distant hedgerow. Your system allows you to monitor the sheep closely and so while some have over grown hooves they are not lame and always look in good health. Keep going you are doing a fine job!

If there’s one thing I’ve learned in project management is that we’re all constantly learning from our past experiences and that’s how it SHOULD be. It’s hard not to take stuff like that personally - especially if it’s said with a confrontational tone. The important thing is now you have the results and can modify going forward! Besides - until those studies were carried out the only way you could find out would be through experience or advice from others. And it can’t have been common knowledge if you had to search for a trusted source.

What's most important is being able to recognize criticism and grow from it, even if it hurts or comes from a source that's not being kind. You're great in that you care about your sheep and instead of shrugging it off you're fixing it. I knew a guy who had horses (for a thankfully short time) but he wouldn't get their hooves done but every six months, even with his farrier telling him they needed to be done more often since his horses weren't working. His mare had a good inch and some change of height difference between her front hooves and he still rode her 🤦🏼‍♀️I'm glad he sold his horses and got out of them because he had NO desire to learn or listen to people. I'm glad you learned from it even if it wasn't said as politely as it could've been, but unfortunately sometimes it takes a bite to change your mind when the barking hasn't.

Hi Sandi, i have always from the start of me watching u . You have always said to everyone u maybe doing this for alot of years but u say ..i am still learning. And u look at the persons nasty words and check the sheeps for the most of the sheep were not to bad but as u said some breeds were terrible.. But u saw for yrself and now is fixing the issue..and as humbling as it was, u still did it.. well done. Love u girl and yr honesty.. u could hide the bad stuff and we wouldnt kn.. but u air yr laundry per say.. and when yr wrong. U admit it.. thanks...

Have you considered an electric hoof trimmer? The Hoof Boss is a life saver for me, I have a large herd of goats and I have two torn rotator cuffs and a lot of pain. Well worth the investment and in the long run I think it will save you money.

we have a poultry farm. Trimming nails for hundreds of chickens is just not possible. So we give them large sections of rough concrete blocks to walk over and it wears their nails down... and helps to get the mud and gunk from the field off their legs. They can just be sprayed down when they get too dirty ;) Would probably work for sheep and goats too.

Jamie Lynn that sounds like a perfect solution for smaller farms that can’t justify the expensive specialty equipment. Low tech and ultra accessible. If I use any soft pack runs I may do that. My terrain is naturally pretty rocky (granite ledge) so I don’t worry about it too much.

Good morning Sandi, we hoof trimming twice a year. But our flock is on pasture except when they are lambing. So they get trimmed in late October and again after sheering in late May early June. We vaccinated at breeding in late November mid December. They get the same two vaxs as yours. The one problem we have is with a weird ear fungus in our area. The preventative is outrageously priced $100.00 per tube that does 20 sheep. The cure meds are $20.00 per tube and does 50 sheep. We opted out of the preventative and treat only if we see them digging at their ears. We then isolate and treat for 14 days. I can't remember the name of the fungus but it spreads like mad. NASTY STUFF AND SMELLY TOO. We also have to deworm every sheep bi annually. That means drenching tube, thank god that is not my job. Have a great week.

Nobody's perfect and nobody starts off knowing everything. Everything is a learning experience and you didn't fail your sheep you were doing what you thought was best. Now you're doing a different way and I'm sure somewhere somebody will say they do it every month.

I felt her hooves were too long but we all do things differently, I'm glad you were able to do some more research. My dogs are the same way as they stay on grass mostly, there are times when I see their nails and feel bad that they grew so much without me noticing. It doesn't mean that we don't love our animals, life and situations just get in the way and take prevalence. Lots of love to you all! :)

I have 3 Golden Retrievers and all 3 have different nails, my oldest is 13 and her nails are thick and have always grown fast! My 9 yr old mail rarely needs his nails trimmed, I actually think he used to chew on his nails and trim them somewhat himself. I can only imagine how different your Sheep hooves are.

Crazy question. Is there something you can use to vaccine against that virus that caused all the deformities a couple of groups ago? That was so hard on you. I can't remember what you guys called it. The feed guy mentioned it I think.

There's a different between constructive criticism n destructive criticism..there's a way to teach n learn that's not attacking or putting down the other person. See to me, I get it. Constructive criticism can help improve quality or productivity but its when they become rude and nasty that is perplexing. Like, you can give advice or let someone know that something may need adjustment without being nasty to someone. They could be like "Hey, check out this data from (reputable source) that says this method of (whatever topic) can really benefit the livestock, and think its something worth checking out." And provide a link to a source. So simple. Why be rude when kindness goes a long way. Sandi, love your videos and your farm. You're doing great just keep that in mind!

Sandy, I want to tell you how much I respect and admire you for being willing to examine your practices and update them as you get better information. It is a tribute to the level of committment you have to your animals and your industry. It reminds me of a slogan I heard "When you know better you do better" Just be careful not to be too hard on yourself about it.

That topsy turny sheep flipper is pretty neat, makes trimming so much easier than what they need to do for horses! My sister bought her first horse in I think 1970ish whose hooves were the size of dinner plates, we had to walk Babe down from the seller’s place to where my sister was boarding her as she was unridable...it took hours to walk her! No, we didn’t have a trailer, we were city folk & her purchase brought our family into that realm. Mom used to haul hay in our family station wagon! (Babe was also pregnant, two horses for $500!) Hey, with that many sheep, somethings can get away from from us and the important thing is to correct the course. You’re doing well with having a system to keep track of everything. And there’s a lot of “everythings”!

I would love a video about all the named sheep, past and present. How they got their names, what happened to them, etc.

Sandi, I absolutely dislike how people are mean with their comments. There is no need to be mean even when correcting someone. I love how you haven taken it on your chin and have learned something new and have made a plan. Good on you, not many people will say they've made a mistake etc. You're fabulous. We love how honest you are and you've taught others about soft pack and sheep hooves. Much love from cooling down NZ. X

Constructive criticism is just something everyone has to accept as reality. Pure hateful uninformed criticism is not. Also it sounds like your equipment needs some loving. That hoof trim chute was SQUEAKY.

Thanks Sandi: Don't you think that vaccinations at age of 12 weeks are too early because they still have passive immunity from their mothers that will last for 6 months or even longer if they were breast fed? Delaying the 1st vaccine dose may be more effective and cheaper as you won't need a third annual dose for the 1st year. Please keep up the good work and videos. Goodluck!

PRAEIS THE SHEEP GODS!! so glad the sheepies are going to get the hoof care they have needed. hope other sheep farms will follow your lead. :) and wow! in the US the green trimmers are only $10! I have a "small" dairy hard and only have to buy new ones 2x a year! But it seems your buying them weekly at double the cost!

Have you ever thought of using an electric grinder for the hoof trimming? It would be faster and wouldn't dull as easily. If nothing else it'd be easier on your hands. I know they make some trimmers specifically for sheep and goats.

Sandi, you should NOT be embarrassed. From watching your videos it is easy to see the level of care and concern you put into your sheep. You do as well as you know. Now you know better and you will certainly do better. Of all the things that could be screwed up, not trimming hooves doesn't seem like it would be high on the life threatening things to do. Although not a farmer , I think I like watching your videos because of the amount of work and thought you put into your sheep.

Admittedly my entire way of doing sheep was 180 from yours. I guess that is why I like seeing your way. With the hoof care, I tried always to prevent extra hoof trimming. I fed them on our " wale rock" this kept their feet worn down. I always did feet when I sheetrd. Other frames needed far more trimming than mine. I can see how you would have to trim 3 times per year. Not the way I did sheep for 20 years, but little of what Ty ou ate doing is as I did. I like watching your way. Happy hoof trimming. I have no doubt that you will get a solar powered digital ultrasonic hoof trimmer.

I have no interest in being a sheep farmer (prefer goats), but I LOVE your videos! Honestly, I have the alarm set so I get notified every time you post. I love how real and honest you are. Women who are doing something that is considered a traditional male role is inspiring to me. Don't take the critics too personally. No matter what you do there will always be haters. You did the right thing in researching the topic and coming up with a solution that works for your situation. Keep up the good work and keep inspiring others!

There is also fault with the person that responded though, people need still be respectful because their exposure from that tiny clip of a video doesn’t give them the whole picture. Maybe that ewe had issues and couldn’t be trimmed etc. so as humans, they should respect that they don’t know all of the details and make comments in a respectful and constructive way because those comments are much more likely to be taken in. If the ultimate goal is to make the situation better for the ewes than you should want your criticism to be seen and heard not disregarded because it was vulgar & rude.

I TOTALLY agree and was thinking that very thing when watching. It's called "constructive" for a reason. An attack is more destructive than constructive most times. I applaud you for still being able to speak about the situation so humbly. I think most of us would be less likely to publicly address such a rudely spoken criticism.

Wow, how big and REAL are you Sandi. Give yourself credit for all the work you do, and you do it very well. I found your channel completely by accident some time ago and I am so happy I did. I am not a farmer Not even close, would have loved to have been. I am an unemployed Senior customer service specialist LOL. And lessons are lessons, if we learn from them that is the point! But hey, as Elvis would say, Don’t be cruel. Love your channel. It is one of the highlights of my day. When you start doing hoof trims more often time how long it takes and how hard or easy it was to get through that time. It can be pretty easy to say "this didn't change anything" when all you have to go on is your memory, although your videos probably help keep some track of how it goes.

I don't know beans about sheep farming, but I love animals and we do have a hobby farm with horses, cows, pigs, etc. You seem like a very savvy business woman and you love your sheep and take good care of them. Hoof trimming is hard work. Your hands must ache after all these sheep. Keep up the good work. You are a good role model for young women who want to get into farming!

I am thankful that you show by example the importance of constructive criticism. I learn so many things about farming from you, life lessons are essential. Thanks for being you. I don’t think people who are giving the negative feedback should be so cruel because it does cause pain and you don’t deserve to be attacked. Thanks Sandi for your first concern being for the health and well- being of your family and animals.
