Lacquer artist? Nope. Sanding artist. 70-80% of work is sanding, burnishing and polishing. Then cleaning, dusting, preparing brushes, mixing lacquers, and lacquering is just 5-10% of time.
I compressed almost 1h of work on one pen into 7 minutes video ;) Enjoy.

I'm Michal and I'm a fountain pen addict and I lacquer pens with urushi lacquer. On my channel, you fill wind tutorials, videos from my urushi workshop, presentation of techniques, tools and materials used in urushi craft. I am also showing pens lacquered by me and other artists. I review pens but mostly urushi and I focus on this aspect of pen, not usual build, nibs and writing performance.
I am self-taught in this craft, most I know I do I learned from my own experience, trial and error. A lot of them. But also from Japanese books, and videos on urushi.
I make bespoke urushi pens to order, too, so please contact me If you are interested. It can be an ebonite pen I provide (I cooperate with several hight quality pen-makers) or you pen, provide the clip is removable and trim is not too elaborate.

thank you for this video. it's very educational and, as a layperson, it really helps me appreciate the work involved in creating this art.

I would love to see you work on a pen start to finish, I bet that would make for a hell of a video (and editing times hahaha)

First of all, thank you for the great videos! It is nice to have such clear guide videos that are in english. Secondly, could you please show the process to go from a regular resin pen (such as a Pelikan m400, Sailor pro gear, etc.) to the first coat of urushi? I am unsure of how much to sand down and with what grit. Would the amount of sanding also depend on the style of urushi such as tamenuri vs tsugaru requiring more or less sanding?

thank you. Good idea. I showed preparation of Sailor 1911, but never showed actual sanding of resin pen. I strongly depends on pens construction and design too - sometimes you just need to matt surface with 800 grit, sometimes you need to "shave" some areas more (like my Montblanc 149 for raden) sometimes sandint off 0,1 mm from Pelikan M1000 in area where cap when closed overlaps with barrel is enough. Many techniques add just 0,1 thickness (so total 0,2mm in diameter), other can add more than 0,5 mm (raden, rananku, some tsugaru-nuri techniques. Togidashi maki-e can add 1mm or more.

Thank you so much for showing this! In any endeavor, whether a job, hobby, or whatever, it's very good to go into it know the whole job, and not just the sexy parts. It's been many years, but I used to do a lot of woodworking and I spent so much time sanding. I very much appreciate you showing this. Is there any urushi-specific aspect to the sanding? It would be interesting to see that, too. I've read of charcoal being used for sanding, but I don't know to what extent that is necessary, or is people being old-school in their methodology?

There are some specific aspects, but mostly in winishing of this process - I made a video on this - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mauXi7Gg3L21aYU.html uwazuri. Otherwise it is "just sanding". Charcoal and natural whetstones was used in this craft, but is rare now. Only some maki-e artists use charcoal, and for filmakers ;) It was replaced by artificial whetstones, cristal whetstones, sanding paper etc. The only plase where traditional (more or less) technique is used is uwazuri - but now almost noone uses ash from burned deer horns, migakiko powder is used instead, but procedure is the same. Charcoal is great to learn, but it is not as consistent and predictable as artificial materials. And technology of abrasives in last 30 years advanced immensly. There are some urushi craftsmen who started usuing silicon based pastes instead of uwazuri, with good results, but it will be jugded after 100 years ;)

@@TamenuriStudio Thanks for pointing out the uwazuri video. I had no clue about "uwazuri" and never would have thought to go watch that if you hadn't mentioned it. Very informative!
