Thank you for sharing your insights and experiences. I’ve been writing with a fountain pen for about twenty years, and, until I accidentally stumbled upon your videos thought I was only one of two people who wrote with fountain pens. Merry Christmas and have a glorious new year.

Thanks for another great video, Doc! I have two comments. First, regarding cross threading, it happens much more on finer threads than thicker as it's easier to jump over a thread in my experience. I suspect it's more howthe threads start. Second, the spring loaded inner cap is part of their design that greatly reduces evaporation. I've had 3 of their crystal pens for several years now. I've left all of them inked and untouched for weeks on end. Every time all 3 started up the moment the nib touched paper, and these are fine nibs, not stubs or broads. Their system works and works well. Thanks for a great year of videos! Looking forward to seeing more!

Thank you for showing us the capping annoyances it's sad they've tried to be clever with a spring loaded effort. Very straight genuine review and that's what we want to help us make a purchase. Thank you and Azizah for all the time you spend making reviews. I'm looking forward to another year watching you, and are forever ACE. x Best wishes to all PenPeople and for 2019. LeZc @@

The spring loaded cap could be an attempt to mimic the Platinum slip cap and make an air tight seal... combined with the Visconti pop when uncapping? Also, the quality control on the urushi lacquer has added several months to delivery of Kickstarter sold pens. That's going to be a beautiful pen, but Wancher got out over their skies when the project was so popular. I've been expecting mine since October.

Just watching through a few old videos, I agree with the converter pen. I like a converter because I like switching inks out so much, however, I bought a three-way filling pen and I am thinking of eyedropper the pen because it's pretty. :)

Just purchased mine from the Wancher website (in aka tamenuri finish) and waiting to get it. The problem with the inner cap is shared with other brands , I have an Esterbrook Estie oversize and has the same “problem”, biut after a while you get familiar with the mechanism and you learn how to deal with it. Simply, you need a bit more caution when pit the cap in place, for the rest, it seems a very good deal. I have mine for USD 545, with 14k nib, pen pillow, cover etc etc . I’ll let you know when it will arrive.

With threaded caps, I sometimes have the uneasy feeling that I'm unscrewing the cap and section from the body of the pen, and just occasionally, it's true, especially with older pens. The spring loading might provide some reassurance on that score.
@JiewenTan
@JiewenTan 5 жыл бұрын
I was thinking they might trying to be like Platinum and create a better seal when capped. To avoide body unscrewing I think you just need to put the thread on the outter body? Been using a few pens with thread on the outter body and never really have that issue before.

Thanks for the review. I hope that Wancher keeps it up, for the price I may end up buying my first ebonite or urushi from them. But to be honest I find the idea of a Japanese pen with a non-Japanese nib to be a bit of a downside. Wouldn't it be nice if there was a Japanese company that made/sold nibs to others, to compete with Jowo and Bock? As for the threads: you implied this is because it has fat threads. I don't have a pen with fat threads, but I will because I think there is something visually appealing about them. But do you really think cross-threading is inherent to the fat threads (I'm skeptical of that) or perhaps more likely because of the implementation on this pen? (e.g. maybe less than ideal tolerances). With my very first pen (Pilot Kakuno w/ EF nib) I had the nib perfectly aligned and then one day it was off. It took me a few iterations of that before realizing that I would sometimes snag the tip on the edge of the inner cap liner. I'm now more careful (i.e. "somewhat paranoid") when capping pens and this doesn't happen. But thanks for mentioning the issue, and that it's apparently even easier to do it with this pen.

Have you heard of a Wancher dip pen that comes ina wooden pencil styled box with a tablet pen rest and a small bottle of ink?
@rztour
@rztour 5 жыл бұрын
So it seems from comments that the spring load by design is all about a better seal. That would seem to be a worthy cause. But the nib getting snagged was awful since the importance of keeping a nib pristine can't be understated. Also the threads not catching right could make one think, "I hope I didn't just goof-up the threads." Thank you for being so thoughtful with this review. Yes it's a good price for the "name" you're getting, but that does not make it impervious to some shortcomings.

The more i think about it i feel the eyedropper filling is better than cartridge convertor or piston filler. Lesser moving parts. Nothing to break, get stuck or rot. Easy to clean and rinse. The only potential drawback is potential burps. But that cN be eliminated by a deeply finned feeded or a one way shutoff valve( compromise the no moving part though)

It is, fir all purposes, a Conklin All American in black ebonite. The differences seem to be the sprung cap, lack of clip, and gold? nib.

As you assert, it's a delightfully understated writing instrument, Stephen, but I really don't like those cumbersome threads - crossing them is more than likely; the spring-loaded cap is pointless, & having watched your prototype video, it would be wise to return to that original design, & lose that spring. I have hard floors in my house - I can see that hitting the deck & fracturing - even for the relatively inexpensive cost of this scribe, I wouldn't really consider having to replace parts (potentially) so rapidly. It is one thing to make the design simplistic, but with conventional threading at the section, never have I been unfortunate enough to cross-thread a cap, so before I'd contemplate buying it, these two elements would have to be revised. Aesthetically refined, but not sold on the cap & closing system. Excellent overview - Thank you !! :D

Nice Christmas Eve review! Sure, there are some issues, but having a full ebonite or urushi pen at these prices is killer relatively to the competition. Only the Namiki Capless Raden's compete but they are not total urushi throughout the body of the pen. HOWEVER, because of the prices the issues are worrying or off-put, especially when you compare those prices to companies like Pilot Fine Writing Division (including Namiki), Nakaya, Montblanc, Platinum, Sailor, Yard-O-Led, etc. These brands not only hand a near or actual zero compromise on quality for their top-pens at the prices of a Wancher Ebonite or Urushi, but a very power customer set backing. Even so, Wancher seems to get a lot of things right, and are growing, so perhaps they'll get better in time.

It depends, I never post and never really write without my cap in the right hand, so I don't worry about the cap rolling off the table. The whole pen tho.. Thats another story. I can definetly see myself picking up the pen from the floor a lot and going to the bathroom straigh after to clean the pen.

In the KS there was option for roll stopper and a pen pillow. Roll stopper for the cap, pillow for putting away the pen. Problems solved.
