Thank you, Stephen. Great to show the craftsmanship of a dedicated man and the quality he makes. I’ve seen quite some pens of his hands passing by on Instagram and I’m very impressed by his work. That impressed that I have asked him to make a pen for me with not many specs, with complete confidence. Of course I’m thrilled, but in a positive way. Beside that Michal is a very kind man, who also loves to share his knowledge, and his enthousiasm is contagious.

Thanks for another enjoyable and informative video. I've been watching Michal's KZfaq channel for a few months. I couldn't get my head around him not being a Japanese master. By that I mean, could he be any good without the tradition. He's seems amazing. It is almost like watching someone demystify an ancient art. I know that's not what it is but he walks through and describes the painstaking details in such a clear way that it almost makes it seem that anyone can do this. Of course, without his rare level of dedication that wouldn't happen. He provides a great window into why these are such prized pens when the work is well done. Thanks again for the video.

Hi Stephen, I have just noticed that some of the pens are of the same shape and size of the pens that the Indian company Ranga Pens sells. I am not sure if tamenuri is using Ranga Pens and base and finishing them off with Urushi? May be you have some insight into this.

I'd call the finish on this pen midori-dame. It looks to me like black over dark green, like Danitrio's interpretation of midori-dame, though I've seen others use this name for finishes with brown over light green..

Looks to be an impressive pen. But when you compare this to the Platinum Izumo Urushi Tamenori fountain pen (for example), I’m not so sure the Tamenori Studio pen is such good value as first impressions suggest. The Platinum Izumo is hand made and hand finished by Japanese craftsmen and has an 18k nib. It can be bough brand new for around the same price too. But this is an excellent and promising start for a western Urushi creation. Thank you Stephen.

Tamenuri Studio - thanks for your reply! I think your pen creations will be comparable to the closest alternatives if you perhaps introduced gold nibs with a broad range of options above the normal F, M, B. But offering a lower price for a steel nib option would be attractive too for anyone new to Urushi and looking to get their first pen. The Urushi finishing you’ve achieved from your extensive reasearch looks to be excellent quality and very attractive. I look forward to seeing your venture succeed.

@@xjsteve thank you ! I already offer gold nibs on request, and I am working on pen model and finish that will be more affordable - making just one piece of each now, and I will make short series of 3-5 pens in same design and same finish (ie midori-tamenuri) - then I will be able to offer some predictive and reasonable pricing. Right now I am making v 2.0 of pen Stephen showed - several month have pased since I made this one, I have even better brushes (high quiality hake) better process, much better highest quiality urushi - It will be fun to compare those two pens ;)

@TamenuriStudio
@TamenuriStudio 4 жыл бұрын
It is around 100$. Urushi work cost depends on technique and size of pen. Raden, gold, elaborate techniques bring the price up. Generaly it starts at 250€ on typical/large size pen.

Once urushi is cured (properly) risk of allergic reaction is almost zero. Its fresh, unpolimeryzed urushiol what is allergic.

@Alexei2539 4 жыл бұрын
@@TamenuriStudio I had the cured urushi in mind when I made the post. And thankfully, as you pointed out, it is rare. There is a famous retired shogi (Japanese chess) professional, Kato Hifumi who I recently learned needed to use a special set of pieces due to his allergy. They traditionally use urushi to cover the carved out characters on the pieces.

YES ;) I will work with Nabi (penmaker - Wet&Wise) to adopt bigger nibs (#6) and gold nibs of other makers and other converters. I'd like to make a series of pens with Platinum 3776 nibs and pilot con-70 converter ;) Or a captured converter of much bigger capacity (like Leonardo?).
@lez7767
@lez7767 4 жыл бұрын
Tamenuri Studio. Yes good...your work is exceptional and your skills very rare... The bigger nib would look better and a bigger converter type thing instead of the standard international... some make a captive converter type but if you will...make the converter / ink reservoir so you can take it out to clean...swapping ink colour would then be easier.... nothing about your work is standard...it's outstanding. Best wishes LeZc

I have owned expensive fountain pens and I have put a $17.00 steel nib on a less than $4.00 fountain pen. I have seen in print some fountain pens costing as much as an expensive automobile. For me, I just love fountain pens and when it comes to expensive pens like I was told many years ago, I am enthralled for different reasons or justify by using many excuses which draws me to perhaps an expensive pen. Yet, not so much because of its cost. If I can afford it, expensive, but well worth it to me. I have had limited editions and lean towards them. I fell on hard times many years ago and had to sell several of my pens. Although selling the first one hurt so much, as far as what I received for them, basically either what I paid or a little more in what was paid to me. However, my interest, if I were to say what attracts me at this point is perhaps that there are only a certain number of pens made of the limited editions and therefore it seems like being in an even more exclusive club of sorts by owning one that very few others own, or even for that matter afford or care to spend on a fountain pen. There are all kinds of reasons, some people collect and use only vintage pens. I have a penpal who writes me and she is enthusiastic about a new acquisition of her latest find in a vintage fountain pen. I prefer new pens myself. Each of us loves what we love in our general love of fountain pens, drawn by more than the cost or it being expensive to acquire. We just love them!

Although this is a absolutely awesome finish, the pen in itself is a beauty as I have seen other Ranga pens. But here is the question, does putting a new finish on a pen changes it so much as to give it a different name? If this was done on a Montblanc, would you care to think of a different name for the pen other than calling it a Montblanc? Thanks.
