The amazing thing about the cast of Sanford & Son is that most all the character actors from Aunt Ester to Bubba to Grady all worked with Red in the old days and when he got his big break he shared his success with his friends by insisting they be a part of the show. RIP John Sanford

That's mostly true. Whitman Mayo was not one of Redd Foxx's friends. A writer on the show worked with Mayo & got him the role. Grady was meant to be a one-time character, but we know how that worked out. I wish I had a source, but I remember random facts like Mayo being buried in the same cemetery as my bro & Dad, Forest Lawn on Mallory Rd in College Park, GA.

"Sanford and Son" was one TV show that brought genuine laughter to my Mom. A divorced woman who was supporting two Jr High age kids didn't have much time to do anything but try to make ends meet during the early `70s, so we really enjoyed this show. Fred, Lamont, Esther, Rollo, Grady, Bubba, Julio and even the Mortician became very familiar characters in life. Mom died in 2011, but she never stopped loving "Sanford and Son" when she would come to my house and visit on Sunday afternoons, while we ate spaghetti and watched "Sanford And Son" on DVD, still getting the laughter relief!!!

The producers made a very misinformed “knee-jerk” decision to fire LeWanda Page (Aunt Esther) simply due to a lack of on-camera experience. The appeal of an actor or actress lies within their ability to connect with the audience and to realistically portray the story of the character. She was a hit with the audience and formed an integral role in the storyline, becoming one of the most popular television characters of the 1970s. Yes, she had initial problems conforming to a sitcom taping format, but she had vast experience as a nightclub comedy performer on a live stage. She knew how to connect with a real, live audience! I am so thrilled that Red Foxx threatened to quit the show if LeWanda was fired. I’m so glad this show was a part of my childhood!

@bigboi71
@bigboi71 4 жыл бұрын
@@bignah139 Here's her obit from the NY Times: As you can see there is no mention of a surviving sister. LaWanda Page, the acid-tongued comedienne who, as the cantankerous Aunt Esther, traded barbs with Redd Foxx on the 1970's sitcom "Sanford and Son," died on Saturday in Los Angeles. She was 81. The cause was complications of diabetes, The Associated Press reported. Ms. Page was a veteran of the black circuit of theaters and nightclubs. She began as a dancer, added a fire-swallowing bit (billed as the "Bronze Goddess of Fire") and moved gradually into skit and stand-up comedy on the so-called Midwestern "chitlin circuit." Most of those clubs, she later said, were dumps, the kind of places "where if you ain't home by 9 o'clock you can be declared legally dead." Her big break came when she was tapped for a supporting role in the second season of Norman Lear's "Sanford and Son," which starred Foxx, a friend from comedy club days, as Fred Sanford, an eccentric and irascible junk dealer in the Watts section of Los Angeles. As the ungainly, wisecracking, Bible-toting sister of Sanford's late wife, Elizabeth, she quickly became one of the show's most popular characters. Her character, Aunt Esther, took her share of zingers from Foxx and other cast members - Sanford's friend Grady once quipped, "Nice having her around, she makes the junk look so pretty." But Aunt Esther usually responded with equally stinging rejoinders. "Watch it, sucker!" her favorite catch phrase, was followed by a spate of sharp-tongued invective. The exchanges between her and Sanford were among the weekly highlights. "Sanford and Son," ran from 1972 to 1977 on NBC and remained one of television's top rated shows, inspiring several spinoffs in which she also appeared. Ms. Page was born in Cleveland on Oct. 19, 1920, and began her dancing career at age 15. After years on the club circuit with comedians like Foxx and Richard Pryor, Ms. Page moved to Los Angeles in the 1960's and joined the comedy group Skillet, Leroy & Co. She soon developed and honed her trademark feisty comic approach - more shrill but still reminiscent of Moms Mabley's homespun wit. ("Honey, that old man couldn't keep no kinda job. That's the only man I know that ever went to the unemployment office and lost his place in line.") She is survived by a daughter, Clara Johnson, of Los Angeles. Throughout the 1970's and 80's, Ms. Page played cameo roles in a few feature films and made guest appearances on talk shows and sitcoms. Offstage, she was an advocate for equal opportunities and better pay for black performers. __________________

I used to love to watch that show and holler and laugh and it was all in good fun and humor it would never fly today and that's sad because it's just as funny but you know old Fred yes he was my favorite too and it wouldn't be a show without old Grady and Esther yes Esther was great I used to love to watch her come in there and give Sanford a hard time. And poor Lamont he tried to keep one step ahead of Fred but he just wasn't that sharp and Fred kept him in line such a good show in old Red Foxx greatly missed he was such a great comedian a great person!

Another great clip, Rick! Thank you! I loved LaWanda Page (born Alberta Peal). Her catch phrases, “Watch it, sucker!” and “You old fished-eyed fool!” always put me on the floor! I loved her later on ABC ‘s “Detective School” as well. And, by the way, I’ve never understood the voice-over telling viewers that the show “was recorded in front of a live studio audience.” (also used by other shows). Has there ever been a show recorded in front of a DEAD studio audience? I’m just saying.

I grew up watching Sanford & Son, and loved all those shows that were on back then, that unfortunately, would never be considered for Television Production nowadays. Lawanda had that comedic "timing" that made the banter (and battle between) them comedic gold. I "DID" know that was Demon Wilson as voice over.
