Original music by Sanjay C recorded with the Volt 276
In this video, I review the new Universal Audio Volt audio interfaces. The Volt audio interfaces by Universal Audio are their newest line of budget interfaces. They are compatible with Mac, Windows, and iOS, and include a couple features that other interfaces don’t have. These extra features include a vintage button that emulates the 610 preamp by Universal Audio. The 76 interfaces also include a compressor built-in. Its actually the 1176 compressor! In this video I’ll let you hear the vintage mode and the compressors on vocals and guitar recordings. And I’ll let you know the pros and cons of these interfaces. I’ll also share which interface I think is the best one for most producers.

What do you think of the Vintage mode? How about that compressor? Did you hear the difference?

Yes, it's pretty nice and subtle, but on a side note, they could've also included loopback for utility apart from such a nice compressor feature.

There's a clear difference when using the Vintage mode and the recording sounds a little brighter and fuller. The compressor is a great addition but it adds a little change and somehow muffles the instruments.

Nice sound especially in that price range. It's sounds pretty similar to the 4K-function on Solid State Logic's SSL2(+) series if not a tad better.

It's the best when compared to the scarlett air mode and ssl 4k button: the air mode boost with a tiny amount of distortion but no body as with the 4k gives body and boost but with distortion...the vintage mode give a shimmer on top that don't introduce audible distortion more like a HD sound

People don't realize the amazing times we live in - try living just 20 years ago where quality audio products were out of reach. When my father was in his 20s, he had to build all of his own record equipment except for the tape machine but that set him back a lot. This is a huge step in the right direction for high end companies to get into the entry level game. Trust me. It took me a decade of working in studios to have enough money to comfortably buy a Urei 1176.

Thanks for the reviews, so are all the compression/vintage settings locked in or can you toggle off after recording? Looks like a good way to start out having it all in the box. for me im looking for a bit more connectivity such as ADAT for expansion or a 6in/out would have been nice for synth users. As for plugins, I use waves as saves having to have expensive hardware and one of my main gripes with UA previous hardware. Nice to see this range though.

Thank you so much, Sanjay for this session on UA Volt. I had such a bad experience with Audient ID-44 that I am just looking for an interface with a quality build. I am not ready to spend thousands on Apollo and I know that because of their built-in DSP it certainly makes sense to spend that amount. I am using Waves, Valhalla, Baby Audio, and iZotope plugins so I just need a quality interface. UA's name has its own value and I am expecting it to stand by these budget interfaces too. Love every episode of your channel and looking forward to getting my Volt-476 in hopefully next month when they are released in the market.

@NaweedQadirdotcom
@NaweedQadirdotcom 2 жыл бұрын
Hi @@gaborkiss1425, there is line interference noise coming out through the monitor out. I tested my monitor Eris XT 8 with Motu M2 (my backup interface) and runs perfectly. ID44's driver had issues earlier before they released 4.2.1. The first few months I was very happy with Audient. A lot of users of Audient have opened the casing and sprayed anti-static on them which they claimed resolved the issue. I am looking for a clean, warm-sounding interface and hoping UA Volt will provide it.

Hello Sanjay! Thank you so much for another great video! I've always wanted an Apollo Interface, but than decided that dont want to overpay for DSP, as i am already used to other plugins by great brands. Volts look amazing, especially with the Compressor and Vintage settings. Absolutely great! But just a question to you: would you rather get 476 over 276 for additional outs? and also, i just got Focusrite 4i4 recently (been using their interfaces for a long time, and just upgrated to the latest one), but i am not a big fan of their software to control the unit... would you switch to Volt? or stay with Focusrite? Your personal opinion is really appreciated=))) thank you so much in advance!

I love the concept of the Volt, i just wish they made a larger version. For instance if they did what Focusrite does with the Scarlett series ranging from Solo-18i20 then i would definitely buy a Volt. Im currently using a Presonus Studio 192 and looking to buy a Motu 8pre to expand my Studio 192 via ADAT to 16 channels and also have a backup interface incase my Studio 192 goes down, but if UA made a Volt version with 8 preamps and ADAT in/out then i would be sold instantly. But i think UA still did a fantastic job with the Volt and they are going to sell a TON of them.

@orryfishburne5326
@orryfishburne5326 2 жыл бұрын
@@HamHavoc lol i know that, im talking about in the Volt series since they are supposed to be in an affordable price range. Its obvious that Volt was made to compete with the more budget friendly interfaces like the Scarlett Series, Motu M series, Audient D series, etc, and tap into that market. The Apollo Series are their flag ship models, but way to expensive for a working class guy like myself. It would have been nice for them to make a 8 channel Volt that was more affordable than the Apollo. But they didnt, so thats that. Still think the Volt Series was a good step forward for UA into that side of the market, and they did a good job designing them
@HamHavoc

I know companies can't fit everything into a preamp, either for budgetary reasons or another (saving some features for ver. II). Other than that, the look and features are very good for the price.

I’d love to see a comparison between the “76” Volt models and the Apollo series... Let’s say, plug-ins aside, is it worth the extra $$ for an Apollo, even for the solo?? Are the drivers/ conversion, etc. that much better?

The Apollos have one of the best A/D converters in them, and they also have DSP chips so if you take music seriously and want to make it in a professional environment with good tools then yes, it's worth it imo.

DSP is a thing of the past. With the new Mac CPU’s you have more than enough power for plugins. The motu has/had best in class conversion, who knows how they compare. Yet doesn’t have a 610 or 76 emulation, then again we don’t know how good they emulate.

I think the main reason to get an Apollo is to have the ability to run the Universal Audio plugins.

Great video! I just need an honest opinion here. I am super confused between SSL 2+ and Volt 276. I like the fact that SSL hosts 2 headphone outputs, a monitor mix knob and the included vocalstrip plugin. Whereas the UAD hosts the onboard 76 compressor which is really handy. Which one do you prefer, and why?

Loving these interfaces. I’m more into the IOS producing and I’ve been looking for a nice usb-c connection and this seems perfect. But I’m wondering when using it with iPad Pro with usb c connectivity do i still need to use power adaptor or will the bus power be enough to use with iPad?

I came to learn about the Volt and was surprised to see a speedy reduced. Good info, for a guitar player to capture song ideas with pedals and an strymon iridium, will the one channel non fancy version be the ticket ?

Good overview. I am almost sold on the 276. So I can use it for home recording to my Macbook and as a live performance preamp? Say I mic up an acoustic guitar with a condenser mic. Can I plug the condenser into the XLR in, power the unit from the wall and have a 1/4" instrument level signal out to a guitar amp or PA system? If so, it is an unbalanced out, right? Not a balanced one?

I currently use an Audient iD44, the lack of ADAT on these is sort of a deal breaker for me, since I use more than 4 channels. But if people don't use a lot of mics then these are probably a really good option, since Universal Audio has a really good reputation for quality.

Thanks for the in depth review. Definitely ruling this out, cos of the non compatibility of UA plugins. I'm super happy with my RME Babyface Pro, but was looking for an alternative. What I'd really like to know from you, is your opinion on the new MacBook Pros. Are you going to buy one? If yes, which one, and why.

I like what the compressor did to your vocals. It gave it a nice sheen and fullness. I have the actual 610 and it touches everything on the way in except maybe cymbals and it's hard to make it sound bad. A lot less post work as it mixes itself. In my opinion I use outboard compressors along with plugin versions and I'm constantly reaching for the outboard. I also have the BAE FET compressor which is modeled after the 1176. Plugins work in a pinch for convenience, but ehhh lololol

Greetings Sanjay, great video and congrats on the Universal deal! I will be upgrading from the 2001 mbox original, as a matter of fact I already pre-order the 476, however did not pay attention to the mix/monitor knob while going over the features on my own. Very big issue since I will be using this for Twitch live streaming and wont be able to hear my recently purchased “Grand Piano” vst instrument from Ezkeys 😱…really really sucks that I will have to cancel my order… do you think there is a solution to my issue?

Great video! I have been using a Roland GO:Mixer Pro and an Alesis Multimix USB4 to record digital piano / vocals and they work, but same issue with both (and with all my keyboards); I always have to have my keyboard volume almost max, and the line in volume almost max (on line inputs) to get a barely usable audio signal into my iPad or pc. Do you know if one of these interfaces is likely to be better in that regard? Thanks again (subscribed)

Great video! Those do look awesome. I got the M-Audio 192|4 after watching your video on the 7 interfaces for $100. From that video it was the one that sounded the nicest to me, plus I love the layout and big size, fits just perfectly under my monitor (screen). I have been nothing but happy with it - it's a great interface. I am thinking about upgrading to a 4 input interface soon, I should finally be able to have some friends over to jam, (lockdown restrictions finally going away) and would like to have 2 mics and 2 guitars being recorded. I hope you get a chance to review the arturia 4/4 when it gets released, as those do look and sound really nice.

Hi Sanjay, I am looking to buying my first interface, and was quite sold on the motu m2 and found a local dealer with one. But I then saw this video and wonder if these ones are much better than the m2 and worth the wait (or even international shipping since I live in Canada). Will the m2 still be a good choice even after these new stuff that have came out? Thank you

I use the Komplete Audio MK 6. It has the option to record two XLR mics and 4 line in sources, and 2 headphones can plugin. With gain dials and phantom power. It got a very affordable price. Not sure if I should replace it with Universal Audio.

I was going to go for the arturia minifuse (and thanks to your previous video) cause of the extra USB port as a I have a minilab mkII and 2 hardware synths and I use the ipad for my DAW and app synths but this seems to be a better choice, I guess getting a usb powered hub is the only route if choosing this one. Or can you connect the minilab with rolands usb to midi cable? What would you recommend between the minfuse and the volt 2?
