The worst thing about foot pain is that it makes you lazy, and I was lazy to begin with.

I noticed this problem after bunion surgery. Dr said push off on big toe, I have been avoiding for 10 years. Everyone wondered why I wasn't walking right, it was because of pain in my second toe. Sneakers with high arches help. I need A-LOT of arch support. It doesn't matter how much cushion, the arch support makes all the difference. Shoes like Saucony Murarder and Nike Monarch have lots of arch support that I need. What is upsetting is that I'm just figuring this out now, after months of training and injuring myself further.

Thanks for your comments. If the pain is directly under the ball or pad of the foot at the base of the second toe you probably have capsulitis. Capsulitis is a general term for join inflammation and it generally occurs because the second metatarsal joint after your bunion surgery is receiving too much pressure. The shoe and orthotic work together to take pressure off of the joint. One of the best shoes for this is a running shoe company called HOKA. There shoes are very supportive and tend to be stiff in the ball of the foot which will reduce some of the pressures. Our practice has a shoe store and we get our patients into a condition specific orthotic for "capsulitis" if you go to slomotionshoes.com you can find this capsulitis orthotic. It will do a great job decreasing pressure on the painful joint. I hope this helps you. Dr. Byrne

Thanks for the comment. If there is swelling on the top of the foot you might have a stress fracture. You can view a video on metatarsal stress fracture if you google search San Luis Podiatry Group. If there is swelling and pain on the top and bottom of the second metatarsal joint then you may have capsulitis but in your description and given your age I would expect a stress fracture. Immobilization with the use of a walking cast boot may be a good direction for you. You have done some good self treatment but it might be good to get into a foot and ankle specialist. Best of luck.

I have this. Be careful the pad put in my arch support was worse on my body. It ma have been irritated nerves. Mine was shaped like a circle and maybe too high. I gave up trying to get help. Removed the arch support. Gained 20 pounds. I’m on concrete floors all day.

I would love to come see you but I live in GA. I'm In college and I was also using nike free runs and putting a lot of load on my feet doing plyometrics, lots of calf raises, sprinting etc. I believe I have capsulitis. The issue has been going on for 3-4 weeks now. It started really mild and I guess the repetitive stress I continue to put on it makes it almost impossible to walk on hard surfaces. This is really affecting my gait and causing heel pain due to putting more pressure on other parts of the foot. I recently bought some new powerstep orthotics along with some new saucany shoes. Where can I get a custom orthotic made for me?? I'm spending a lot of money on this condition to decrease inflammation starting with nutrition, herbs, and supplements. I'm in college and have to constantly move around from class to class now and even that hurts. I hope to be able play basketball again but i'm pretty down about this condition. All I do is stay inside the house now while my friends go out please give me advice thanks. (PS I had surgery on my right hip due to a torn labrum and bone spurs last year basketball injury) I've worked hard and recovered from that pretty well and this is really getting to me and I'm usually a positive person. Thanks
