Brigadier Devinder Singh had commanded the 70 Infantry Brigade in the Batalik sector during the Kargil war. He led the critical battle for Point 5203, which had been quickly overrun by Pakistani troops in the early days of the war. He also led the assaults on the Jubbar complex, one of the most difficult campaigns during the war.
A month before the operations broke out during a corps-level war game, Brigadier Singh had also predicted the pattern of intrusions by Pakistan Army regulars but Lt Gen Kishan Pal, the then 15 Corps Commander, doctored his battle performance report to underplay his role.
Brigadier Singh became a victim of prejudice and that cost him a war medal. He was recommended for a Mahavir Chakra, the second highest award for gallantry but was awarded a Vishisht Seva Medal, a peacetime decoration.
Shiv Kunal Verma is the author of Ocean to Sky - India from the Air (Roli Books), a pictorial on the Military World Games and two books on the Assam Rifles. Another pictorial, The Northeast Palette was a prelude to the highly acclaimed Northeast Trilogy (KaleidoIndia). He is also the author of The Long Road to Siachen: The Question Why (Rupa & Co.) and Courage & Conviction, the autobiography of General VK Singh which was published by Aleph in October 2013; His latest book, 1962 - The War That Wasn’t has also been published by Aleph and is being hailed by critics as being the most definitive work on the Indo-China conflict.
Along with Dipti Bhalla, he has produced some of the most highly acclaimed films on the Services. In 1992, he shot and produced Salt of the Earth for the IAF. This was followed by a series of Naval and Army films, culminating with the film on the Kargil War. In addition he has also made The Standard Bearers (NDA) and the Making of a Warrior (IMA). The film Aakash Yodha along with the NDA film was premiered on the Discovery Channel. Having clocked hundreds of hours in a variety of aircraft, he is by far the most accomplished aerial cameraman in the country today.
A graduate of Madras Christian College, he did his schooling at the Doon School. He started his career opening trekking routes between Kashmir and the Zanskar and Ladakh regions. After a brief stint with India Today and the Associated Press he went on to direct and photograph the Project Tiger television series.

Straight trees are always the first ones to get chopped. Similarly, ground soldiers seldom rise beyond a level. It is rather interesting to note that despite such a courageous junior/mid level leadership in our army, one rarely finds senior ranks wearing gallantry medals. It may sound harsh but the conculsion is simple--gallantry gets you nowhere; good pen and command over language take you to higher echelons. But then ground soldiers don't really care. Long live our gallant officers and men! Jai Hind.

Differs from individual to individual. Ancient India had a concept of Rajrishi. Mudgala - born kshtriya, achieved to be Rishi. Bhardwaja - born rishi, became kshtriya. Vishwamitra & parshuram too.

These things eat away and hollow institutions. It's a problem in civil and military both but the repercussions can be more lethal if it happens in the military. After the 2020 galwan incident you saw armed forces especially the Indian Army making emergency purchases and civil/gov also got into action. This makes you question what the fck were they doing before it? Sit on your azz's till you get slapped from the enemy and then wake up while trying to pull up your pants. Even after kargil we got caught by surprise in galwan. Thank the stars weve got enemies like China and paxtan who keep waking up our civil/military elites with half azzed attempts! The sheer size of our nation is the biggest reason for such a lackadaisical attitude. If we were in a situation like Israel, I'm pretty sure we'd be living in refugees camps somewhere by now. I mean, you look at tv news shows and see armed forces officers there. You listen to them in podcasts on KZfaq and you can see kitne paani m hai apni fauj. The very fact that all our achievements are against paxtan. A nation with a similar population of uttar pradesh and that too with dwindling economy. I mean just look at the rot, country's prime minister gave the orders directly from the red fort on 15 aug and bring in CDS with a mandate of creating theatre commands but our armed forces haven't moved an inch as of now. Political interference in armed forces is never good but I think pmo should directly get involved and start a purge both in military and civil institutions. National security is nobody's personal fiefdom!

My salute to Brig Devender Singh & his troops for bringing the country glory in a tough fight with enemy in Batalik sector. While he & his Jawans did not get the true recognition (as heard in the story here) , I am sure in the heart of their hearts , they yet would have had all the satisfaction for bringing the country all the honour & reclaiming all the grounds earlier infiltrated by enemy. My special salute to all those who lost their lives in the war - Country owes hugely for their gallantry & courage. Our next generations will be richer to know about these soldier's stories of valor. Government can still take a lesson & cues from this Video & at least create a memorial (for batalik sector heros) so that these troops can be given extra pride which they richly deserve !

Sir mein bhi us ops mein tha aur mein 5 para se hun . Maj Bhatnagar sahb ne ye nahi bola tha ki mere JCO / troups unfit hain. Unhone ye kaha tha ki 1. ham log abhi direct Siachin se down hokar aa rahe hain. Aur aaj hamko 4 din ho gaye hain continue chalte chalte . 2. Hamko din mein pahle tgt area dekhna padega uske bad ops plan TPS ko samjhayenge than attack karenge. 3. mujhe abhi Kam se kam 24 ghante chahiye taki Jo Troups niche se 4 din se continue chal kar aaye hain unko thoda rest mil jayega aur mein objective ko dekh lunga apni deployment aur dushman ki deployment samajh lunga uske bad attack success hoga. 4. Bhatnagar sahb ki is baat par wahan Jo bhi bare commander the wo naraj ho gaye aur Bhatnagar sahb ko jor jor se danth rahe the jabardasti unko usi samay attack karne ke liye bol rahe the . Jabki usi din ham log village Dhah se lagbhag 12 ghante chalne ke bad us jagah par raat ke andhere mein pahunche the. 5 . Agle din early morning jab CO sahb aaye to ham logon ko fall in kiya aur Briefing kiya aur ham sabhi PT 5203 ki taraf attack ke liye move kar gaye. Kisi ne bhi nahi bola ki unfit hain. Puri ki puri strength gayi thi. Aur Bhatnagar sahb ko back to 1/ 11 GR kar diya without buddy. Is mein Bhatnagar sahb ki bilkul bhi galti nahi thi. Unke sath galat hua.wo ek great offr the. Aur aaj bhi hain. Is episode mein mujhe kafi batein achhi lagi kyuki jitne name sahb ne liye hain un sab attacks par mein present tha aur purani yadein taja ho gayi. Ant mein yahi kahunga ki kargil ops mein jaldi baji nahi kiyi jati to itni casuality nahi hoti.

Decisions taken in a hurry result in severe chaos, I wonder what if we didn't have an officer like Devinder Singh ji the causality might have crossed 1k. I was listening to Rtd Generals on ANI on the issue of the Hamas attack on Israel back then there was no news of the invasion of Gaza from Israel's side but the generals in the studio kept saying if they(the Israeli Army) didn't do anything in 8 days then they will lose the momentous of support from the world they have been humiliated and they must quickly do something, So this was a Generals perspective of war they want results a quick one but on the ground how a Brigadier observe the situation from his perspective and here I like to recommend this in-detailed Video to those who are addicted to quick justice nowadays...

I think Kargil war was fought without any planning. It was also reported that when Gen.Malik told PM, let us give some time for planning, PM reportedly got angry, then Gen. gave statement, let us fight whatever we have. Our army paid a heavy price due to adament attitude of political leadership.

Military science is based on "correct assessment of ground realities + best planning in those circumstances". For this the thumb rule should be: (1) Listen to the feed back given by the local military leaders; (2) send that info to the highest command without adultration; and (3) Let the highest command order and let the local commander obey. Now India is changing ... Command Theators, integrated use of army air power and navy, optimum use of all resources even in one theator, fighting decisions in military hands and war decision in political hands.

Kargil में ही न टीवी वालों ने लाइव टेलीकास्ट के नाम पर हमारे सैनिकों की सारी तैयारी और गतिविधियों को घुसपैठियों तक पहुंचाई थी

It was an ironical contradiction between the assessments. In summary, our intelligenc services were in quite obliviation of the terrorists acting across the LOC. Administration relying on the intelligene was spellbound at the reports coming from the battleground. No doubt, Musharraf was correct in his saying that he had caught us by the neck in Kargil. JAI SRI RAMKRISHNA.

Alternative narrative on Kargil war. Brigadier Devinder Singh and his division are responsible for Kargil War. It was very sad to say that Casualties could be minimised properly executed in the entire operation. Lessons are to be learnt. Deserved credits could be given to the heroes. Participants in this discussion are still longing for the appreciation.
