I first saw this song the first time MuchMusic played it, 3:30 AM, after watching TV all night underground... my lungs hurt and the furnace wasn't warming me up... I was a jaded 27-year-old warehouser with a BA and it almost made me cry.

Always landing in Toronto in my memories....those beautiful days when this famous song came out and I was a new immigrant in those days, still listening after about 15 years....it still rocks. Our Canada has so many singing gems and that is why I say" I love you Canada".

This song is universal for all the working poor who wound up barely alive in some Toronto basement ...sweet voice juxtaposed with images of hard living in a hard town...Be like Sarah and make sure you do leave...Toronto is the armpit of Canada and this song makes that point beautifully

This song came out when I was in middle school and I mainly loved it for the tune. Now that I'm a underemployed university-graduate, living on her own for the first time at the age of 25, I feel like I can finally relate to this song.

This song is an absolute gem 💎...came out at the perfect time...we'd bitch about our super intendant using too much bleach in the hallways of our basement apartment...I'll leave the rest unsaid as the song eerily but beautifully speaks of my/our lives almost in replication....I so miss those carefree days, how we've all parted now and gone on with out careers and families. Tha k you Sarah Harmer for singing our life and giving us this beautiful memory in song to remember forever ❤ 🇨🇦 🍁

You live out where the street ends In a basement apartment with one of your friends And the tap drips all night Water torture in the sink The furnace is burning But it's still cold, I think [Verse 2] I can smell the bleach That they use in the hall But it can't clean the dirt off of me It's seeping under the door In across the floor It's starting to hurt [Chorus] Every time I breathe Every time I try to leave Every time I breathe [Verse 3] Now the toaster sticks And the empties are piled I haven't been up the stairs in awhile now I gotta wash the sheets on my bed I gotta watch those things that go unsaid God, I wish we'd leave it at this Every time I breathe Every time I try to leave Every time I breathe [Bridge] And every evening, you open the door You come down There's nothing like watching TV all night underground And no one is watching me slide Below street level, barely alive [Verse 4] Now we live out where the street ends In a basement apartment just like our friends We always said that we were different But you know now that we weren't 'Cause there's holes in all the bottles And my lungs hurt [Chorus] Every time I breathe Every time I try to leave Every time I breathe

I was such a fan of this album when it was released and still love it. It just dawned on me that this song has serious Lilith Fair circa 1997 vibes and would've been a top track on the radio contending with the likes of Sheryl Crow and Sarah McLachlan during that time. That is of course if she had any want or desire for that- otherwise, it was great then and still holds up now!

I think that perhaps the Lillith phair sound you hear is actually just Canadian music? Although the sun did come out right around that time.
