The late sixties to late seventies were the best period for Doctor Who. Before that they hadn't quite got the formula down yet, and afterward it became a little too much style over substance, with exceptions for both of course. So many people were brought on in the Tennant era who were knew to the show that they seem to have misinterpreted the bugs as features, and the whole show became something completely different after that. Worse.

That was such a scary episode, and as much as the doctor is wonderful, it's the companions who make the show. There will never be another Elisabeth Sladen, she set a high bar right away and then made it feel worth reaching for by all her fantastic work as Sarah Jane. Makes you feel like her family was lucky to have her with them on earth and we were lucky to get the insight into her craft that she gave to us through all her work.

A classic bit from a time when they did their best with the tools they had. The Robot loos so janky walking about and its hands look like they could fall of if they tried picking something up. But when I first saw this on PBS back in the 90's it was so epic.

Fun fact: In 1990, I was guest musician at a recording of a pilot show for the BBC Wood Norton, where I was invited to spend the night. However, at 3am whilst the rest of the BBC slept, because I couldn't sleep on account of my now being in the inner-sanctum, I went snooping around all the unlocked sheds where this was filmed looking for a giant silver robot. However, UNIT made me sign a NDA so, for now I can say no more! 🤫🤖🇬🇧

As this rejuvenated version of Dr. Who said in this very episode, "You might be a Dr. but I am THE Dr." Tom Baker IS Dr. Who. Have to admit as a teenage boy watching many, many years ago, I had a crush on Sarah Jane Smith. Also always got a kick out of how the robots legs kind of "flicked" out in front of him when he walked. I can't remember but did they use Isaac Asimov's laws for robots the basis for it not being able to attack Sarah Jane?
@marcusdamberger
@marcusdamberger 2 жыл бұрын
I can't help but think that Terrance Dicks , a writer would have been at least in passing aware Isaac Asimov's laws of robotics. I was thinking the same thing, as the woman scientist demonstrates the robots inability to comply.
@Redfern42
@Redfern42 2 жыл бұрын
A similar scenario was presented in the 1956 sci-fi classic "Forbidden Planet". Commander JJ Adams (played by Leslie Neilson) asks the same thing about Robby Sarah Jane did, could it be used as a weapon? Dr. Morbius demonstrates by handing Robby a blaster. Without hesitation it zaps a bush, but when ordered to shoot the commander "right between the eyes", the robot starts sparking and arcing within his dome, shorting out from a programming conflict. (This demonstration is something of a "Chekhov's Gun" that reveals a critical plot point near the climax of the film.) So it's possible Terrance Dicks may have drawn from that movie as it was more widely known (among general audiences) than Asimov's works (as good as they are). Unless Dicks openly stated the inspiration, I guess we'll never know the true source.

I believe you are correct about this episode featuring Tom Baker saying he was THE definitive doctor. This being his first episode as the new fourth Doctor. Its also the episode where he springs out of the TARDIS in a juggler outfit, while trying on different outfits. He later has a head massage from a hospital doctor who puts him to "sleep", then he opens his eyes when the coast is clear so he can escape. Even this first episode previews the humor Tom Baker is so good at; that we were going to enjoy during his run.

Here is where I got on board with Doctor Who; the "Robot" series. PBS in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, first broadcast the episodes beginning sometime in January 1975. I was barely in junior high and would sneak down the steps to the living room at midnight to watch “Dr. Who”. I was so sure I would get caught, I had the volume as low as it could go and sat on my calves and feet, hunched over with my face as close to the television’s floor console screen as possible. This BBC original was broadcast on our local PBS station, just after a comedy show, “Goody Goody Yum Yum”. At least that was a jingle often sung in between skits. I wish I knew the actual name! Watching The Doctor was my secret ritual that I kept until it stopped running. When I was 31, I had a son. I told him about “Dr. Who” and the incredible uniqueness and talent of the show. He did not believe one of my favorite Doctors wore celery on his lapel! One day, when my son was slightly older than I was when I discovered my lifetime cult show, I learned a reboot was coming. When my son got off the bus, there is little doubt his mother earned a much-unwanted award for “Most Publicly Embarrassing “. I skipped down the driveway, dirty half apron loosely affixed, hands gooey with pasta dough, and squealed, “Guess what show is coming back?” I reached both glob by hands out and pulled my horrified son’s face towards mine as I answered, “Dr. Who!” I was clapping and joyously performing bicycle leaps as he kept his eyes trained forward and marched towards the house. “Aren’t you excited?” I asked. He said he was but he already read about it on a site I had never heard of two days ago. He also said I looked like a freaky Lords a Leaping and asked me to hurry in the house before the next bus with any remaining kids from his school who haven’t already seen the video of his mother teeing up for the insane asylum is not forced to see the real thing. That being said, our most favorite time, though he is now 24, is when he comes over to visit and no one else is here. We order take out, gather snacks, and binge taped episodes that he has pre-screened for me. Since my deployment, there are certain scenes I am unable to view or may need a memory refresher. Four decades later, who knew I would be enjoying this incredible show and cast with my son. He knows all of the writers, directors, and everything behind the scenes as well as other episodes they have been involved in and non-DW projects. It is so much fun to hear extra information. Does anyone else have a long history of watching the show? I am sure it would be interesting for many of us to read how far back we go.

Tom Baker was my favorite Doctor as I was growing up. The first Doctor I watch regularly was Jon Pertwee. Of the original Doctors my favorite was Tom Baker. My least favorites were Colin Baker and Peter Davison. Colin Baker IMHO was the worst Doctor of All time. Of All the Doctors to present day, the character of the doctor that has been the best under Pertwee, Tom Baker, Tennant, Smith, Eccleston and Capaldi. My least favorite Doctors of all are Colin Baker, Davison and Whittaker. The writing for the character has gotten so political in the most recent incarnation of the Doctor that after watching one season of the current Doctor I stopped watching. Yes, I know, the Doctor has always had a situational backing in the time period of the writing of the stories, but the writers and the director of Jody Whittaker's Doctor is pushing his own opinions and political stance in the character and stories of this Doctor. So in 2022 or '23 when the new director and Doctor take control I will watch Doctor Who again to see if the Doctor becomes a story of a Space and Time traveler again or remains a Far Left/Liberal wooden box to push their political views. I'm hoping and praying that the future of Doctor Who will return to good stories with comical and serious moments again and leave political views OUT of the store lines.
