Also saw it in "The Bells of Sint John" when the Doctor hacked the spoon head to release clara.

That's the old English RP accent at work (often called BBC English) Most actors and presenters in BBC produced media used it at the time, and all the Doctors spoke that way until Sylvester McCoy, who used his natural Scottish accent.

That's a classic car with a sci-fi heart, as far from basic as you can get. If the Doctor had climbed into Ford Capri then I would have agreed, but Bessie? Sorry, but no.

Not to mention that the TARDIS had a faulty navigation system in the early years of the show. If he tried to use it to travel a few miles, he'd be just as likely to land in ancient Greece. Mundane transportation was more reliable.

Well this story was originally designed for Jon Pertwee, so that’s probably why he drives Bessie

He had to get to the Think Tank somehow, and using public transport was out of the question. Probably couldn't thumb a lift or commandeer a military vehicle, either.

@@SuperCatElvis Maybe that and also "Robot" was the last serial produced by Barry Letts. Guess Bessie was also kind of a trademark of Letts' tenure as producer on Doctor Who as well as Pertwee's years as the Doctor.

The whole idea was that the Doctor wasn’t really able to control the TARDIS that well. In Hartnell’s day it was stated very early on that the TARDIS couldn’t visit the same place and time more than once. This idea was well and truly forgotten by the time Number 3 got the use of the TARDIS back, but it was very rare for the TARDIS to go where the Doctor intended. By the end of Number 4’s era his ability to control the TARDIS had improved (“the TARDIS and I are getting rather better at these short hops”). But also, Bessie was a throwback to Number 3 who had a love of cars and other fast vehicles. The use of Bessie had as much to do with his passion fro the open road and smell of engine oil as it as anything else. I quite like the fact that the TARDIS wasn’t often used for anything other than the means to drop into an adventure. In post-2005 Who the TARDIS is used more frequently for convenient little hops. Like the sonic screwdriver, the TARDIS has all too quickly become a short-hand way of moving the story along and is a little unimaginative in my opinion.

@@GrilloTheFlightless yes I know, thats exactly what im saying. By four he had somewhat been able to hop around a little too though. Not room to room but across a city. Its nice that baker got to drive Bessie though. Just in the emergency its a little ironic that he has a vanishing box that can go backwards to before the call (aside from making a paradox) but chose to drive for probably a good while

@@melodypond. many people have a problem where they take time to get used to Classic Who because it's so different, so maybe you should watch some of the later eras first because the 1st Doctor's era is the most different of them all. I'd say start with seasons 25 and 26 (the last 2 seasons of the show) and maybe Dragonfire, the last story in season 24 (because it sets up for seasons 25 and 26). This is because seasons 25 and 26 are the most similar to New Who. After that maybe go through the 3rd and 4th Doctor's eras because they're quite accessible and mostly an easy watch.

I think the 4th Doctor was keen to ditch Earth and go exploring after having spent much of his third life stuck there.

Bessie's last regular appearance was in Part 4 of this story. It made guest appearances in The Five Doctors (1983) and Battlefield (1989) later though.

That's just what television was like in the 70s. It has its own strengths and weaknesses. Either way you'll get used to it.

TV was like that in general at the time. American TV was influenced by the movies. British TV was influenced by the theatre. It was that way for a very long time.

@@leo11lim Doctor did also have a shitty budget and well has had for most of its life, even revived life, only until "recently" has it seen a huge investment of money from the BBC after viewing began falling after Matt Smiths era and the begining ot peter.
