Think about this: she threw the bottle at that poor slave woman because she knew her husband was fucking her and she couldn't do anything about it. Of course it wasn't the poor slave girl's fault, but imagine how the average wife would treat her husband's side chick in her own house -- even if the side chick was an innocent victim.

Great villain? Lol. She was a tragic figure not a villain. She wasnt imposing. She had no complex motivations or even simple ones stemming from some "villainy" idea. She had no power. She was weak. Maybe even weaker than the slaves. A fragile and emotionally battered thing. Patsy had power over her entire life and happiness without even wanting that power. Mistress epps had no power at all. Her husband even said hed get rid of her before patsy. Doesnt matter if she beat patsy senseless, shed always be less than patsy in the eyes of everything that matteted to her: her husband. And at 500 pounds a day, patsy was worth more than mistress epps. Epps could disown patsy and get alot of money for her. Epps could disown his wife and she wasnt worth shit. bitter and broken and powerless. Her life meant nothing. She was a villain to no one. Patsy maybe but patsys whole world was one big villain so even there she cant add up or stand out. Thats no villain.

Her character was the scariest, indeed. I understood what Paulson just said about Mrs Epp's upbringing making her the way she was but ugh...... It's so hard to even find an excuse to her cruelty. She was just evil. And to think that people like that existed.... It's hard for me to imagine how things were way back then. How hard life must have been. And how the white women felt "betrayed" and had no other way to get their revenge then to get the rival slave torn-down. Mentality is one incredible thing. And the saddest thing is if some (evil-natured) people nowadays had the possibility to still have slaves, they gladly would. (I know there's still slavery in the world but I mean, if it were..legal). Many people complain about too many slavery films being done (come on, there was just two in a row lol) but I personally think it's good. History has to be told. This shouldn't have happened and should never happen. These films just show the reality of how cruelly SICK the world can get.

I think the overseer is a foil for Mrs. Epps. He felt insecure, stupid and undervalued in this system. Instead of reflecting on his privileges rather than his disenfranchisement, or, heaven forbid, developing empathy for others lacking respect, he channeled his feelings into pciking on the next person down the ladder. Mrs. Epps is very similar.

Agreed. You know for a fact some people in the south would take on slaves again. Hell the founding fathers were racist and pro slaves including Thomas Jefferson who said if a slave is freed, he does not want them to intermix with white Americans. Him and a pro slaves actually bought land in Africa (Liberia) to send freed slaves.

Slavery is still going on in India and parts of Asia to this day and it was white people who put an end to slavery in the western world - what do you think the song “Amazing Grace” is based upon? Of course everyone turns a blind eye to all that because they choose to believe that the only racists in the world are white 🙄 time to wake up. Research Thomas Sowell and gather the information needed to make a balanced view of history and not one concocted to limit the world. The same people telling the world only fragments of the information required for people to gain the full insight are the same people who suppressed and censored the Hunter Biden laptop story from coming out which goes to show how corrupt most of the media truly is. I even lost a KZfaq channel that I’d had since 2012 for merely speaking out about it so there is a lot of corruption going on, especially in regards to history. Be aware

Sarah did scarily wonderful! Her eyes throughout the film were so cold. I loved her answer to the first question, very poignant...and true. I think she did a great job with book to movie transfer because even in the book, Solomon wrote about the Mistress as if he felt sorry for her, he knew she was a cruel bi*ch but he also understood way past his gender that this was a humiliated and cowardly woman and the only way she knew how 2 react was with utter terror and he was like that's the way she's gonna be, that's they way she'll always be since in her lifetime, things wouldn't have changed. I think Sarah should be proud of what she did in the film, not many actresses could play this without fear of how they're portrayed and getting in2 the mind of the character...but she did and Bravo!

Stop making excuses people like her knew good and darn well what they were doing and chose to carry it out. That's what I said, that's the reason someone would take the American slave trade out of the history books, to try and continue the same ridiculous lies we've been getting for centuries. How is saying someone's pushing an agenda to attempt to make all of black people's problems even in a HISTORICAL sense seem to be of their own doing not "questioning everything?!?" If you're a white man in America and here the majority is OVER 70% Caucasian, shouldn't YOU be the one questioning the dominant demographic and majority? Let me know.

I finally re-watch this movie after so many years and the one thing that I don’t agree with in his interview even though I think the actress believes it is that Mrs. Epps knew exactly what she was doing it had nothing to do with the lack of understanding of the nuance of the situation or to do better. Mr. apps knew exactly how this happened to her white fragility because that was the importance of the dancing scene Where Mrs. Epps through a heavy, thick, partially full bottle of liquor at Patsys head with full force. Right after that she demands that he sell Patsy, he says no, mrs. Epps threatens to leave him, and he tells her that Patsy is more important than her. I think the two nuances missed in that scene explain perfectly exactly who Mrs. Epps is and what she understands. When she threatens to leave as a severely Christian woman her husband because of Patsy. Not only is that very telling about how much of this she can no longer take but it also taught her again where her place was in this married the Patsy to some degree will always be above her which I think as a white woman in the south to be lower than a person that you didn’t even consider a person had to do a lot to her ego. Then when Mr. apps reminds her that if she leaves she’s going right back to the poor situation that she came from it reaffirms that he knows exactly how much she will put up with because she has no other choice and no other means to take care of her self but what I think is interesting is if she knows that for herself then she understands exactly where the slaves are coming from to some degree and should have more sympathy for Patsy but doesn’t because jealousy is a bitch and so is Mrs. Epps. I think what Mrs. Epps represented was the fact that the white women of back them even though they were also a disenfranchised and marginalized group with very little rate we’re just as eager and equally as capable of being malicious terrible people and should be held accountable to that.

@AMB33ZY
@AMB33ZY 2 жыл бұрын
@@cadyg2531 in the modern day this is the argument against white feminism versus POC feminism, especially when it pertains to blacks feminism. While white feminists may intend good a lot of the time their tactics of garnishing sympathy and support heavily or in part really relies on their whiteness. White women rarely realize that they’re white tears affords them sympathy because the white men who are in charge see them like their daughters or their mothers and so that is not something that would be afforded to a black woman. The same thing goes with throwing a temper tantrum white women can start a riot and throw a temper tantrum and still maintain their femininity and their sense of protectiveness in a way that black women could not guarantee. It isn’t until these called out that they even realize it is happening by but by that point so much investment has been made into this idea that fighting for it seems reasonable but in reality the mere foundations of it is fraud and riddled with problems. If Mrs. Epps could see Patsy as a person and sympathize with her situation then she would realize that Patsy has no more agency than Mrs. S does and controlling her husband‘s behavior and that is an excusable because Mrs. Epps knows Patsy situation, she is choosing to ignore it to afford her the comfortability of her whiteness. A lot of wives and white women do that.

I don't think you are a product of whomsoever raised you. I think people can be raised by psychopaths and indoctrinated to hate... and then move away from that. This is why movies like this are important. They depict hate as wrong, in a clear way.

I didn't even recognize her with the brown hair. I agree with what she says about the mistress. Its how your raised and brought up. The mistress doesn't see what she's doing as wrong. I loved how she went deep into the character and history behind it brilliant.

If y’all think her character was bad, just look up Madame Lalaurie from New Orleans. She was a slave owner and tortured her slaves in her attic. There’s an American horror story season inspired from it. Go watch Coven (the 3rd season of ahs) and you’ll see. It’s horrible

Yes, another person who had it rough was Sandy Duncan as Missy Anne in Roots. On The OWN Network she talked about what it was like being one of the very few White Actors in a Miniseries that was predominately Black. After Kizzy gets sold off, Sandy remembers getting the Silent Treatment on the Set, folks especially Blacks spat on her in public and even her Grandmother thought she did what she did. It took her a long time to live it down and even to this day she never watched the Full Movie, it's too painful for her.

If I were offered an acting job like that, as painful as it would be, I️ would feel obligated to accept it because portraying the reality of the time is so important and history not learned from is bound to be repeated.

Alex Larson conformism is weakness, the will to act comes from understanding the importance of the times, blacks are going to hell in a hand basket, why condone the like of the insane media, hmm? What does it profit to be a believer in what is commonly proposed as history in an age of evil like this. That's like believing food is good from a man who pays you to eat it when having not seen what you receive, why does he pay you to eat?

strange..i thought that was also insinuated in the movie, that there was some sort of subliminal attraction between sarah and solomon in the movie, after watching it a few times. maybe a curiosity as well, as to where solomon had come from and his intellect. of course had they invented that for the movie, this would have taken the whole context of the whole film right into another direction, sort of like when he went to visit that other plantation and the white guy was treating his slave practically like a wife, although in status only.

Rationalization is an innate human tendency. Taking it out on Patsey was her most readily available outlet for her frustration over her husband's infidelity. We tell ourselves the stories we need to to feel justified in what we do. It's plausible, in a twisted way, that she would have seen Patsey not as a victim of sexual exploitation but a jezebel competing for her husband's attention and affection. Especially since whites at the time widely regarded blacks as more animalistic and driven by base instincts, part of which was being sexually unrestrained.
