How to keep ends from splitting 1. Get tapered hair cut. *okay I’m good on that one* 2. Use wide toothed brushes and combs. *I got some of those, won’t be a problem* 3. Avoid bleach and permanent dye. *I never did either of those in the first place, I’m good* 4. Avoid heat tools. *Dont use those in the first place so I’m good* 5. Be gentle and patient. *that’s my problem*

I was traumatized when I learned that some people brush their hair from the top...I literally once had to explain a girl how to brush hair because her daughter (who was like 2 at the time) never let her brush her hair, but she would let me....yeah, she had been brushing her hair from the top, and the baby was feeling pain

My mom did that... With a plastic brush that had most all the little soft little tips to protect your scalp... So it was scraping my scalp to bruises. Every. Single. Day. And then she'd wonder why I would throw a fit every morning 🤦🏽‍♀️ that's also why when I got older, I cut my hair to a bob because I hated detangling it. Now I'm finally in a happy place with my long hair and it's less traumatizing for me to take a time, sit down and gently detangle everything...
@madinp1177

Yup my mum did that and then wondered why I was traumatised about going to the hairdresser and she had to do it in my sleep. Even now that she’s in her sixties she yanks her hair with a hairbrush from the top of her head because “she doesn’t have time” to do it properly from the bottom and detangle it. She has the worst head of hair I’ve ever seen because of it

My mom kept my hair pixie short so it wasn't too bad. When I started to grow it and it got thick and heavy she stopped combing it and I had to take over. Starting at the bottom and then just brushing through once the tangles are out is just the most painless way ever

My baby fine nape hairs and edges are finally growing back! It took me ages to figure this out, so it's OK to not wear a sleep bonnet if your taking other precautions to avoid friction while sleeping! Cheers doll!

Great video! Pro tip: when using a paddle brush, FIRST brush holding your tool vertically (widens the bite so more hair slips through those now parallel teeth) Then hold your paddle brush horizontal like you demonstrated. The teeth will now be set in a serrated form to add tension. Great job on this video!

It's amazing how strong hair can be when you don't use too much heat or chemicals. I remember when I had relaxed hair, I could easily take a strand and break it without pulling too hard. One day at work, I found a hair strand at one of the computers. The strand was long, dark, straight, non-afro textured hair and I tried pulling on it (I know I'm a weirdo) and it would not break. I had no idea how strong hair could be since I had been getting relaxers since I was 5 years old. Now I'm natural and my hair is so strong and hard to break.

I’m studying to become a hairstylist and I love watching videos like these to see different types of point of views. On the part of brushing/combing, the best way to avoid too much damage and breakage on the hair, you HAVE to start brushing or combing from the ends and slowly going up. You start to slowly remove the knots that way. So imagine it being like a braid, when removing a braid you DO NOT start from the top, you obviously begin from the bottom exactly the same with our hair when you start combing from the bottom up you begin to untangle knots way more gently rather than forcing or pulling roughly on them.

omg this is the channel i've been waiting for for ages. Hair "science" is so full of misinformation from marketing and from people with more non-science-based hair experience so i'm so happy to find someone covering it in the way you are, basing it in science but making it more approachable for a layperson to understand from a practical-ish perspective! I just found your channel today and am now marathoning a lot so maybe this has already been covered but among the many "trimming tips and hacks" videos out there, among all the "use sharp shears so you don't damage your ends while cutting" tips is the hair singeing "trend". I've got "trend" in quotes bc there's apparently some documentation about it being historical as well, but i can't find a single person take a scientific approach to it, just a lot of people going "this is scary" or "i tried it and the texture freaks me out so its obviously bad" or "i tried it and the result looks un-split to the naked eye so its obviously good". Have you ever come across a more rigorous look at that one? also somehow knowing that bleach harms hair and also knowing that the sun "bleaches" things in a milder way, i still never put 2 and 2 together to think about UV protection to prevent hair damage, but now i have a new thing to learn about!
@SarahIngleOfficial
@SarahIngleOfficial 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I’m glad you found your way here. I haven’t looked into the singeing trend yet. Logically, I have a hard time rationalizing how burning a strand of proteins could be anything but damaging, but I’d definitely want to look into it more before I gave any sort of opinion on it.
@fiveminutefridays
@fiveminutefridays 3 жыл бұрын
@@SarahIngleOfficial supposedly it "seals" the end of the hair so it doesn't let moisture in or out through the ends or expose the cortex to the elements, so the singed end is less prone to breakage going forward. on the one hand burning hair seems bad, on the other, that explanation doesn't sound insane? but i've given up on trusting my intuition on things like this :P if i had a microscope i'd be singeing my own hair to try it myself and see what it's actually doing but im a little broke for that lol

Thank you SO SO much for not only telling me how to avoid it, but also how it happens. It was really interesting to hear how easily the cmc hair-glue (lol) can get destroyed and now I know how to prevent it. Definitely following after this awesome vid 💕

I love how sun lightens my hair colour dramatically so I don't think I'll start to use uv protection... :"D

This video made me go back and check to make sure my leave in’s have UV protection. I used Verb Curl leave in which markets that it has UV protection and my research found the protection to be from sunflower seed EXTRACT! I also found that both my leave in and curl cream have ethylhexyl cinnamate which is octinoxate, a sunscreen! They usually are not labeled separately on the list so it tough to look up if there is sunscreen ingredients in your conditioners. The best thing to do is to shoot for at least on conditioner that has UV and color protection advertised for now. Awesome video! Love the hair science with no BS

I use the “it’s a 10” for blondes leave in spray. It has uv protection plus many other great things for your hair. And it smells so good too.

yess brushing from the bottom first helps so much ! when my ends are really tangled I hold a small section of hair a few inches from the bottom, but the key is to hold that section higher up or closer to your head so it's not pulled tight. that way if a tangle is hard to get out you aren't subjecting the entire section of your hair, tip to root, to that force. just the small section you're working on.

I would love to know how scientists categorize curly hair! Yes please! I want to understand all the nerdy stuff about every type of hair. Another video idea if you're up for it is about hair types of people who are mixed (half black half white, half Asian half white, blasian, etc)

I will day from my experience with long straight fine hair, the brush that has the least snagging is my boar bristle brush. For me it’s a very forgiving brush because it’s has no ball at the end and is extremely flexible. I really ever snags my hair and it can’t get the big tangles (which I use a wide comb for). Plus boar bristle are the best at distributor your hair oils.
