The biggest tragedy of this version is the change in dialog. While this version acknowledges that the developers' intent was that our heroes were actually hungover after the prehistoric party, they took away Frog's ye olde' speak, and, we also lost "You are a marshmellow Glenn". Tragic

I feel some of the changes were warranted because they "unchanged" certain contextual shifts that the original translation unintentionally introduced. For example, Frog's _ye olde speake_ gave the impression that he was a very proper, respectful, polite person. But in the original Japanese, he's actually much more brash and "when in doubt, hit it with a sword". He uses "less than polite" speech with most people, except *very* few individuals like the Queen. But then, when you fight Slash in Magus's castle, they treat each other very respectfully as fellow swordsmen and are each honored to fight (and, afterwards, Slash is honored to be beaten by) such a skilled opponent. But, in the translation, Frog goes from uncharacteristically polite to uncharacteristically insulting to a fellow warrior; instead of respect, it's an exchange of flaming banter. And the flashback scene to Glenn's childhood, when Cyrus chases off the boys messing with him, it wasn't that Glenn was afraid of *being* hurt. He was aware of how strong *he* was and knew that if he fought back, the *other kids* would get hurt. But that didn't really come across well in the original translation because calling someone a "marshmallow" tends to come off as "physically sensitive" rather than emotionally. But then, on the other hand, there were quirks of the translation that were not only good enough in relaying the meaning, but they also became _iconic_ (but you're still hungry). Changing those to a more literal translation gained nothing, but lost the iconic feel of the lines. So I approve of the changes that brought a better picture of the original context and avoided _unnecessary_ changes. But I don't like the changes that not only didn't do anything to provide a better or more true translation, but also lost iconic charm in the process.
@imalittletoxicjustalittle4 ай бұрын
@@rafetizer you mean the dialog feels correct? how is you wanting the game to be worse a "nitpick"? its straight up dumb the correct translation holds way more weight in scenes i dont see how having some cringe incorrect translation would make the game better apart from if you're blinded by nostalgia the modern UI is ugly though

@FirstNameLastName-oz5ij3 жыл бұрын
@@irwinvillanueva1308 Yeah it was pseudo Early Modern English. And yes, you read that right. "Modern" English. Fun fact: Shakespearean/King James English is not Old English. If you actually tried to read real Old English, you probably won't understand anything except the conjunctions, which remained relatively the same :D Also, am I the only one who found it weird that Frog was the only character who spoke that way? Everyone else from his era spoke like normal. And SPOILERS to anyone else reading-- Heck, even the people from Zeal spoke in a much more modern fashion than Frog despite being 12,600 years before him. Frog is my favorite, but dang he's quite the oddball in terms of his speech mannerisms.

@@FirstNameLastName-oz5ij cool info and i have to admit i haven't read any old english literature myself. hahaha. gotta check them sometime. and if i remember correctly frog in the original japanese version did not speak with the "thou" equivalent (i think like gozaru?). instead it was just a proper manner like how the ds ports are.
@Grandream3 жыл бұрын
@@irwinvillanueva1308 Correct regarding Frog's speech in the original. You can probably find the full script on Chrono Compendium still. That said, I think the translation team eventually wanted to make everyone speak like Frog does in the SNES translation, but for whatever reason, wasn't able to make that a reality prior to release. It's been a while, but I don't think it was supposed to be "Proper," but more like a... I guess "Samurai" cliche? If you go to Chrono Compendium and look up the Translation Differences page... "Frog was radically changed in the NA version from his original characterization; he did not speak formally and was not the cookie cutter white knight, instead having more of a activous tone. The horrible Elizebethan English of the NA game made Frog seem somewhat of a flowery buffoon; the transition to real dialogue makes him much more serious and real. He was also not afraid to call Magus a pale-faced bastard, or Ayla an idiot for believing him a meal. A good example of his attitude is found in the End of Time dialogue. "Frog: Nothing's going anywhere if you don't have a guy who's good with a sword, right?""

Chrono Trigger is a really great game that covers many audiences if you think about it. You can avoid the fights if you are actually a hardcore player but if you're a casual player you are forced to fight them. BUT that basically forces the casual player to get stronger from EXP and leveling. So casual players don't think it's grinding they think it's part of the game. While the game gives a lot of exploration and secrets to uncover for the hardcore player.

I know! It's awful how it was just cut out in favor of the pointless PS1 CG in so many of the re-releases.... IMO those PS1 cutscenes only exist as a way to tie the game to the story of Cross, which is a game I appreciate the merits of, but do not regard as a real sequel or cannon or truly connected... it was certainly something aesthetically exquisite and fun and worth playing, especially when it first came out, but it does such a disservice to the original in fundamental ways, that I can't ever think of it as truly connected... more like a trippy dream to check out if one is curious nowadays, whereas Chrono Trigger will be a classic forever. I can't believe people used to serious debate about this when Cross was more relatively new... and hell, I know that feeling of wanting the new album from your favorite band to be as great as the others, and you can even convince yourself it is for a week or two... it feels so shitty to realize that something you expected to be wonderful and magical is merely another flawed creation of flawed people, and the perfect masterpiece that happened to appear previously was a rare gift, not something to ever take for granted... and eventually, it makes one's appreciation of those rare as-close-as-it-gets to perfect things that much deeper for it. Didn't mean to go on so long sorry lol

It makes me happy to see someone play this game and experience it for the first time. I was 10 when this game came out and it’s one of my prized possessions and I still play through it from time to time even today and pick it up every time it gets a rereleased. I do wish is could go back in time and play it for the first time. As for the music, I want some of these tracks played at my funeral that’s how good the soundtrack is. Thank you for such great memories of taking me back to my first time playing this game.

My absolute favorite game of all time, and one of the major reasons I eventually went on to became a designer/developer myself😊 Hope you enjoy it!

This game, like so many other people holds a special place in my heart and will continue to do so until the day I die. I was 14 when this game came out and it got me through the most difficult months and years of my young life. What a joy to watch someone play this for the first time. Vicariously experiencing the first time moments again was truly epic and very special to me. Words can't express. Thank you for posting this Sarah, subscriber for life.

Agreed. A modernized version would wreck what makes it work.

Frog is the only frog I've ever liked. Best teammate hands down, in almost every RPG I have ever played. Healing, dope double and triple techs, and top tier offense? Game, set, and match. Im 33 now and i played this when it came out, the nostalgia and music hits hard. One of the best games ever made, I hope they remake this game. It deserves it.

"Does feel very Dragon Ball" LOL! That is so cute! That maybe as Akira Toriyama (the artist *for* Dragon Ball) was the head artist on the original SNES game.

If they ever do a remake for Chrono Trigger the same way they did FF7 remake, I'm gonna loose my shit.

MAN, It's easy to forget how rad Chrono Trigger is when you're so used to the beats, but hearing someone experience it for the first time makes you remember how hard it can hit. Marle disappearing in front of you for a SECOND time? Who would expect that? Frog appearing from NOWHERE for the save? Who is this??? And why is his music SO GOOD? ROBO NOOOO T_T Wandering into Prehistory because Who Wouldn't Want To See Dinosaurs and then realizing later that that's where you'll need to go to get Dreamstone, also, WHO ARE YOU MELCHIOR? I can't wait for the rest. AUGH MOAR.

Being 36 i am neither super old nor super young ,that said i had the chance to start my Jrpg saga off with SNES classics such as FF4 then FF6 then ChronoTrigger and i have to say it makes me happy asf ppl are still pushing to play this gem today. It speaks volumes to the effect these titles have on the entire genre. Almost an OG persona is attatched to them. Great Video and i look forward to seeing you beat a few different endings lol XP
