On the machines' use of humans as an energy source making no sense: my understanding is that the Wachowskis' original script gave a different reason for the creation of The Matrix: the machines are using humans' brains for processing power as part of a distributed network. While the conscious part of your mind is doing whatever in the Matrix, another part of your brain is being used as part of a supercomputer, basically. This makes more sense because it not only does it not contradict the laws of thermodynamics, it explains why the machines need humans specifically (most complex brains in the animal kingdom) and why we need to be conscious--our brains need to be active to be useful for the machines. But the producers felt general audiences wouldn't understand a complicated plot involving parallel processing and got the Wachowskis to change the machines' motivation to something Laurence Fishburne could explain by holding a simple household object, a Duracell battery, up between two fingers.

Let me just start out saying that I love this podcast and I listen to every episode. Last night I was listen to this episode as I was falling asleep and I think I must of dreamt or imagined something rather odd. (After revisiting the episode in the morning I realized it was all a dream) so I thought the 3 of you all broke out into song. I cant remember all the lyrics, but Ralph was singing about how sardonicasts center was love and that he found Adam and Alex very attractive. And Alex chimed in with a verse about being yourself, letting your guard down and having a good time. And then Adam comes in all tender and sings about how sardonicast is his new family and that the audience is a part of that family. There was a animation to go along with the song and everything. It was a very vivid experience. I hope people notice my comment becuz this is too funny to go to waste

When I read Neuromancer, I was shocked by how much of it was in The Matrix, to the degree that I don't think there could ever be a Neuromancer adaptation- it would be a cross between Blade Runner 2049 and The Matrix. The Neuromancer- a human AI hybrid, which is essentially Ghost In The Shell's Motoko/Puppetmaster hybrid aside, The Matrix took the concept of code running down the screen and a Matrix from the novel, as well as much of the fashion, setting and martial arts references (shurikens, ninjas etc). It was quite surreal. It was like reading a novelisation of The Matrix

Out of all the reviews of Reloaded I've seen, no one mentions how padded and overlong the story is. Remember that terrible trend of Part 1/Part 2 book adaptations where there wasn't enough material to draw from so they invented material or drew it out? The Matrix Reloaded has this problem big time. Every action scene goes on longer than needed and plenty of other scenes feel very drawn out. It's like a feature length prologue to Revolutions.

The part of rhe Animatrix that always sticks out in my memory is when the machines take over Washington DC and they force like the politician to sign away rights of the government/country. The robot is controlling the politicians hand as he writes. I thought that was pretty clever, like something a robot might do with their binary thought. As if a person signing something legitimizes the robot cause, when it is the underlying social contract that gives power to that signature that actually matters. Something a robot wouldn’t understand.

They use humans COMBINED with a form of fusion energy, so it's not like they are just using the humans as batteries... it's more figurative than that. Also it's pretty obvious throughout the films that the matrix is basically just a method of control, subjugation and retribution of humanity on the part of the machine sentience. It's given wider context in the Animatrix that the machines only wanted freedom and a symbiotic relationship with humanity, but humans forced their hands and started the war. It's also stated in Reloaded that even if the one fails his intended task the machines are prepared to accept a certain level of survival, implying they can survive without humans if the matrix is destroyed. On the part of why the need to be in a simulation in the first place, Morpheus says it himself "the body cannot live without the mind"... without the Matrix the podborn humans would become braindead and die.

Imagine talking about The Matrix trilogy, and never really mention the subtext. How Neo in the first in The One, but he's just an anomaly within the programming and because of humanity ability to have choice (and hope). Hope being the thing that brought Zee to fight (to have a chance to reunite with Link), The Kid choosing to fight (because he believes in Neo and saving The Hammer). Instead of Neo making the utilitarian choice and to reset the system and reset Zion, he chooses to save Trinity "dooming" humanity, but filled with hope to change.

The original concept for The Matrix was actually to the have the robots use the humans’ brains as a neural network. But when Lilly and Lana presented this idea to the studio, they rejected it because they feared an audience that had only recently been introduced to computers would have trouble understanding the concept. So it was changed to batteries to make it more digestible for moviegoers

I feel so bad because the scene where Neo meets Col. Sanders is basically indecipherable on the first viewing or any viewing after without subtitles, but it's also pivotal to understanding Reloaded's goals and understanding what the hell it is everyone's trying to do in Revolutions. It isn't just that all this has happened before, it's that the resistance, the One, the prophecy - all of it is part of the Machine's design, their way of keeping control. Resistance is inevitable, so instead of letting it destroy them, the Machines calculated a solution - one that allows the conflict to stop and start infinitely. Reloaded is well aware of the problem that Neo is basically Superman, and that's why it ends by telling Neo to go fuck himself, that even though he can punch shit real good, it's not actually securing humanity's freedom. That's also why Revolutions is about finding another way - the _fight_ isn't going to end well, and so Neo sets off to set things right with a giant baby face made of robosquids. It all makes sense when you really think about it. It only took me...4 viewings? And a lot of fan explanations? Great trilogy.

The special effects that blow me away, to this day, is pretty much everything in the first Jurassic Park movie. I saw it in the theater when I was a kid, and it blew my mind!
