Finally watched this episode since I just recently watched Naked. Homers Illiad and Odyssey is heavily referenced like in Johnny getting his Achilles heel injured at the end. Maybe even Beowulf and Johnny being like a Grendel like character with mourning about his mother, even though something might have happened with her and him that made him who he is, since he mentioned that she died and now he is just lost

Naked's weird structure is pretty typical for one of Leigh's earlier films. A lot of his most interesting and influential work has similar fly-on-the wall type pacing, just watching events naturally unfold until they reach some sort of climax, not hurrying things along with a conventional dramatic momentum. Life Is Sweet is another great example. His VERY first films can be a bit of a chore, though. Definitely took him a while to find the right balance with keeping things entertaining.

@@lukess.s 12th if you're counting his feature-length TV plays, 5th if you're not. Either way, Naked is from 93. That's like the mid-point of his career in terms of time right now. I'd also say he started moving away from that signature approach pretty much right after Naked, so I'd absolutely group it with his earlIER work.

If you guys enjoyed Naked. Definitely check out High Hopes, Life is Sweet, and Topsy-Turvy. Mike Leigh sits very closely with me as a director. It's always interesting hearing people talk about his movies that don't know the intricate geographical politics in the UK. He's obsessed with Manchester, and its socialist ties, but also the deconstruction of socialists, and the nihilism that fuels them along with the compassion they preach that they stand for. That relationship between the North and the South of England is incredibly present in all of his films. Hope you guys check him out some more in the future!

Spoilers Something thats easy to miss in “Naked” is the scene with the dancing lady in her apartment while hes getting sexually violent with her ,he notices a skull and crossbones tattoo on her shoulder, and johnnys reaction is of recoiled horror . It’s interesting that all of this could be about johnny dying of some kind of illness such as AIDs or something . Since that was going on at the time . Johnnys violent depressive misery could be a result of abuse from his past then a sudden sickness throwing him over the edge . Also the scene with the poster guy hanging up “ canceled “ posters over posters that say “therapy ?” I thought was a humorous and dark touch to what was going on .. possible hinting that all his personal encounters hes having are gonna swiftly come to an end in some form .

While Alex is right that Mike Leigh had worked in theatre prior to Naked, he had already released a couple of movies and was well known for creating loads of TV plays for the BBC in the 70s, primarily satirising issues around class. I remember in the 90s the BBC devoting a whole night around the 20th anniversary of his TV play Abigail's Party (though I didn't really understand it being a kid at the time). They also showed Nuts in May around the same time (which I loved); it's about a highly strung guy on a camping trip as the reality does not meet his idealised version of the British countryside and he gradually loses it (I guess it's a bit like a funnier, rural British Falling Down...)

I actually read the Chaos Walking trilogy years and years ago, I remember really enjoying it. Each book felt like an entirely different genre and it starts kind of wacky but with some semblance of a reality, and then by the third book the slave race of aliens who are owned and abused by what might be the last real human civilization rises up to shoot fireballs or some shit. The first book is a lot more firm in my memory, Mads Mickelson’s character was great, he was like a lunatic preacher hunting children. Also, sorry to say this Adum, but I haven’t seen Justice League either, but am planning to see the Snyder Cut just for the meme. I assume I won’t understand half the jokes on most of my favorite places online if I don’t watch it, because I’m just guessing it will be memed to death.

Horror movue scripts *could* be amazing but I think there's an issue of focus and standards. A lot of horror filmmamers seem to focus on other elements, so the story really doesn't work. A clear antithesis to this would be The Witch, as it has this really unique and particular script and all these fascinating ideas going into a horror movie, then the presentation elevates it. I recently rewatched the original Poltergeist from the 80s and realized it had a similar sort of appeal. It has some really solid ideas and believable dialogue, even now, and then you have all the wild effects and stuff that brings it to fruition. Hell, to really push the ebvelope, I think Jeepers Creepers has a pretty good script, it's just also a somewhat campy monster movie. It might not be totally serious but the character interactions especially are very memorable because of how genuine it seems.

Hey adam if you have an xbox one make sure to play the king kong video game on that as its optimized much better and fixes bugs the original xbox 360 version had.

Oh my effing gawd! The Megan is missing thing! I'm a teacher, and last week one of my students was talking about the movie as if it was real, and I couldn't help but laugh because the movie is so awful and obviously fake. I wasn't able to convince her of that unfortunately, but I realized that Megan is missing is suddenly in the spotlight now? So weird. All I could think of was Adam's review of it, which is hilarious. Next up is Cyberbully, I guess... where people can't get the cap off.

1:10:05 Good movie, bad script. The first thing that comes to mind is my favorite movie The Blair Witch Project. I didn't read the script, but a lot of scenes were improvised and I doubt that it had mind blowing script.

So the Snyder cut is... a rough cut of the theatrical version basically? They're just going to throw in stuff they decided was better left out? How can anyone think this will be an improvement?!

it's crazy how you talked about how in the movie she steals a baby and gets away with it and that was just local news to us a few months ago about this lady who stole like at least 3 babies from hospitals and raised them as her own for like the past 20-25 years
