@@danielhewson4132 he's not wrong though Christopher Nolan has gone downhill compared to say his work one the 00s. Downhill doesn't imply bad merely lesser and it's honestly why I'm not overly excited for Tenet because there's been no clear sign of improvement or growth from Nolan in quite a while. I want to be proven wrong though because while he isn't one of my favorites I still think he's capable of making great movies and when he's got such a massive mainstream audience he has the chance to bring people something incredible that great artist's like say Ken Loach or Kieslowski were incapable of doing because their work was mostly on the fringe.

I totally agree with Matt. Nolan seems to have gotten worse. Inception and Interstellar had great ideas, but to me, weren't executed well (not bad, but not great) and The Dark Knight Rises was gross to me (to me, a very bad film that makes very little sense to me).

Hearing Matt tear into Scott Pilgrim was so therapeutic. As a lover of the graphic novels and even the movie back when it came out, I always thought Ramona was horribly miscast. In the novels she was so sweet and caring, which made the battle for her work. Her being so sarcastic plays right into the failings of the structure of the film that Matt touches upon.

I feel like I need to defend Scott Pilgrim here. Having Scott get the girl at the very end may have made the movie more commercially viable, but wouldn't have made it better. Getting the girl is one of the most overused tropes and is just the start of a relationship. The lesson Scott learns is that he was a part of the reason all of his relationships fell through, he's kind of a dick. The movie uses evil exes precisely because it is a cliché used to justify why your relationships failed. Getting the girl is one thing, maintaining is another.

Agreed! They seemed to give the movie a hard time. I wonder if it was because it wasn't FOR them? Or if it is because Matt Johnson believes in selling out to get more money. That's just how I interpreted it; when Matt said they could have made a bunch more money.

But this decade he's made Wolf Of Wall Street, The Irishman and Silence, Shutter Island which are all some of the best of the decade imo. And on top of that hes made some great documentaries this decade. I adored the George Harrison one and also the Bob Dylan one was very interesting.

moomoo1200 I was told The Irishman would be “old people Goodfellas” but when I saw it that felt like such a superficial comparison to me. The Irishman is about how pointless being a gangster is. Goodfellas is about how one becomes a gangster and the sense of belonging and purpose that gives, but also the mentality of the violent world Henry finds himself in. Both movies are similar in that they’re both gangster movies that discusses how awful gangsters truly are. Both ends with the characters losing it all because of the choices they made and regretting it. However the way they tell that basic story is so vastly different I find it’s such a meaningless and superficial comparison.

Yeah I feel that Matt just threw out those names as examples on the spot without stopping to pause and think about it, I get his point but Scorsese and Nolan are some of the hardest working always trying to improve directors there is, some of their latest films might not be as great as their older ones but it's not as if they're just resting on their figuerative laurels. A better example of Matt's point would be someone like Tim Burton.

What I think these rating systems need is a purpose in why they rate things a certain way. Why raise a rating based on number of swears versus what swears are actually said? And why raise ratings based on the characters being gay or straight..what's more mature to young audiences about that? They need a total retooling
@kwazhims3lf
@kwazhims3lf 4 жыл бұрын
its completely arbitary, and wildly inconsistent. whats the point/purpose of system if its going to be slung around wildly and fired blindly all over the place. no point in rules or structure if its INCONSISTENT. fuck the MPAA. its not for your consideration, or safety its about censorship, and control
@dirrdevil
@dirrdevil 3 жыл бұрын
They raise ratings on movies with gay characters because they are run by conservative assholes. And quality of swears is subjective; and to be unfair to a bunch of jerks, if some movie had 900 light swears or one fuck, the 900 swear movie might be worse.

Philip Seymour Hoffman is fucking amazing, the part I always go to when showing off his talent is his role in "HARD EIGHT" he's in it for two fucking minutes and the best performance in the movie (not to undermine Philip Baker Hall, he's great) This is the scene here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qbWAdZyUmdqUf58.html Just his line delivery, especially when he says "fun" repeatedly (also reminds me of his "shut up" rant in Punch Drunk Love) its amazing. PTA's intention was to write this stereotypical "asshole' character, he isn't original at all but he's the best of this overused unoriginal role that its entirely justified.

I never knew how strict the US rating system is, as someone from the UK the Canadian one is still quite extreme, but nothing compared to the US one.

I think they should reupload the web series of Nirvana the band. I had to make an Canadian iTunes account to buy season one back then and without the web series I wouldn’t even know about them. I am sure if they had more exposure internationally, a lot of people would buy the seasons.

Australia has the best rating system for movies G PG M- Mature audiences, largely a pointless middle ground but where fairly tame horror movies/ movies marketed towards young teens end up (probably the equivalent of PG13 except without an age restriction) MA15+- the american equivalent of an R rating for most things, very common. my favourite thing about this is that it was legit called m15+ until 2005 when they went back and added the A for some reason R18
