Glad it was helpful! Although your dog may be adult but her knowledge is zero so you have to start from zero also to teach and train. The best and easiest way is to go back to zero and start as if your dog is a puppy.

Its really great that you call out the stress and emotional damage that dogs get from moving too early onto short leash walking and forcing them to do it in the beginning as well as preventing them from acting on their breedspecific wants and needs - and the stress that gets caused due to that in the owners as well! In the beginning of my dog training I didnt appreciate your videos but now that I understand what Beagles are like, I really appreciate your content. It has got more soul than the other rigid obedience trainers.

The problem with having a longer leash is the pulling and lunging that ended up with me flat on my face on the asphalt. (I'm 70yrs old and this is not a good thing) I keep it as long as I can without killing me and my hand. I keep tiny treats in my hand that I give as soon as he walks easily and comfortably. If he lunges and pulls, I stop and he is very good at stopping and sitting and then we start again. We walk with our other older dog (cattle dog mix), who is really easy on a leash. We''ve worked with him (we got him as a 3yr old) for over a year. There is no way I can walk him like you say, if a rabbit or squirrel pops up. Last time I did, he lunged and I landed on the street. It took me 7 months for my elbow to get back to normal. He is walked 2xs a day and is doing better all of the time.

Although she is calm before we step out, I find myself wondering if we need to go back to the very, very beginning since it seems to be her thought that I should follow her nose wherever it wants to go. Thank you for your ongoing support. I appreciate it more than words can describe.

I really enjoy walking my beagle -- always on a leash. He doesn't pay much attention to me. He has his nose on the ground, sniffing. Sometimes I just let him go where he wants to go; but sometimes I have to make him go where I want to go. He'll usually cooperate. Occasionally I whistle and give him a treat to distract him; a piece of milk-bone dog biscuit is fine. Sometimes he circles around me and tangles my legs up in the leash! Then I need to be careful not to fall.

My beagle is 4 (we got her at 5 and a half months). I am at my wits end with walks. She pulls and pulls on walks and I’ve tried so many methods and I’ve hit the point now I see walking her as a chore and that’s now what I want. She’s walked for 2 hours in the evenings on weekdays and 3 hours in the day at weekends. She is walked every single day. I’m now struggling as she’s torn a previous hernia 🙁

2 or 3 hours are way too long for any dog to be walked. Try walking your beagle a few times a day and each walk about 30 minutes, a maximum of 2 walks per day.

Hi Saro, Great content. I have a Beagle that will pick up a scent on a sidewalk or even in our backyard, start baying VERY loudly and will sprint after whatever it is smelling. She is a rescue and I believe she was a hunting dog in a former life. Can a hunting dog be trained to "turn it off"? I can't control her once her hunting instincts kick in.
@SaroDogTraining
@SaroDogTraining 2 жыл бұрын
How old is it? Unfortunately, it is going to be hard but it is possible. Because this beagle has lived a life as such for few years) I am guessing is at least 2 years old), she has practiced that behaviour for years and is used to that kind of lifestyle. For her to be able to turn it off, you need to focus on daily, extreme training regime for at least a year to see the results. That means solid dedication to training. Can you do it or will you do it, is the question.

I am not sure but it looks like in the video you let the dog create tension on a leash - how do you see the difference between that and pulling? Also do you expect the dog to follow you in general direction, or is that fine if the dog goes in front and you call them when changing direction? Thanks a lot!
@SaroDogTraining
@SaroDogTraining Ай бұрын
remember. Tension means "bad" and loose leash means "good". So, if your dog pulls on the leash, it means it is overwhelmed with the situation or the enviroment so needs help from you or don't put your dog in that situation until it is ready. As long as the dog does not pull on the leash, the dog can be wherever around you it wants to be. If it pulls on the leash, then you use the technique that I teach in this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/o7CTnaaFs9_Tc2g.htmlsi=nik1rA3ysQV6zTN6

When you say to begin to teach the puppy to walk on a loose leash or at a young age, what age are you speaking of? I got my female beagle when she was 16 weeks old. I live in a rural area where there is a very large area . Write it first, it seemed to be OK. However she sees this massive place of land to be worked on and wants to sniff forever far away. Since there is not a fenced area, she wants to continue pulling me wherever she wants to go. Unfortunately, over the past 2 weeks, we have ended up with a standoff in which I believe she is totally perturbed with me. I do not want each of us to have this increasingly frustration. Understanding that she has a scent dog from the very beginning, I allowed her to follow her nose; but her nose never leads us back to the house.

Keep the walks short. Up to 20 minutes but let her do whatever she wants to do during that 20 minutes and then turn around and come back home. The majority of the training should be done at home to gain control from the day that your puppy can use a leash and collar which is usually at 2 months of age.

Hes very calm when getting ready to go for a walk, but once he sees another dog or a biker he wont stop barking. He also slams my living room window when he sees people/dogs. Hi Saro! I have beagle that we adopted 7 months ago (he turned 2 years old on Nov 7 2021). We're working on his leash training because he tends to pull. I was thinking of having him walk by me when we walk on the sidewalks (towards big open spaces) and then let him explore and sniff around when we're in bigger spaces. That way we don't spend so much time in proximity with the road and their potential dangers (cars and bikes), which is less stressful for me, and he still gets to sniff around as his heart desire when we get to somewhere 'safer'. Is this a good way to go at it?

My one problem: we woke up at 5:45 am, no accidents in crate, straight to outside grass. He held his urine and feces for 30 minutes. The moment we get inside, he is about to do it. I stop him and try to go outside, 10 minutes nothing. He is timid and scared of outside. Any solutions? (He at least does it on the pee pad inside the house)
@SaroDogTraining
@SaroDogTraining 4 жыл бұрын
I think that happens because you started with pee pad training instead of taking him outside. To reverse this, you need be taking him for good, long walks and if he doesn't, come in, keep him on leash or in a crate to supervise him and try taking him out every 10 minutes till he does it outside. If he does, celebrate. Here is more info regarding this issue: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/payBe7N4p7O0ipc.html

Most dog owners tend to not do the basics with their dogs since the dog is good which I call it in the honeymoon period . Once the dog is done with that period, you will see the real personality of the dog especially if the dog has not been trained. Your beagle feels that he is in control and you are not. He chooses what to do and if he doesn't get what he wants, he gets stressed and expresses his stress by barking...Solution, provide its daily five essential needs to see improvements. Letting your puppy explore the world and do whatever he wants as you explain in the video is all well and good, but what about when he wants to explore things he shouldn't? My beagle puppy constantly wants to eat things off the ground (leaves, acorns, etc.) that could harm him, so I either have to pull him away, physically pick him up and move away, or keep taking stuff out of his mouth. All of these things make him frustrated, but it's for his safety. So what do you suggest then? I'm all for letting him sniff as much as he wants, but it's not just sniffing, it's eating things off the ground.

Wait until they spot a Rabbit. Someone call an exorcist. I saw a Beagle going after a rabbit once literally go through a fence. There was the smallest of clearance. I couldn't believe it went through. Even with the best of training, you can expect them to pull as a puppy. Invest in a harness to relieve the stress on the neck. By one years old they should have grown out of it.

@SaroDogTraining 3 жыл бұрын
The ratings in every country differentiates. My beagle mix puppy, Annie is mix so she doesn't have the white tip but my other beagle has the white tip as he is pure breed. The white tip or the colour of the beagle is not representative of being pure or not.

My beagle is the same however white tips are mainly from hunting so there’s a chance that it’s ancestors just weren’t hunting ones, mine is a full beagle but his paws seem to be all white

Sir my puppy is food obsessed and doesn’t listen if he sees food anywhere,he pretty much eats everything and eats things off the ground and begs for food when anyone in the house is having any kind of food .He is also a very good counter surfer.
@SaroDogTraining
@SaroDogTraining 4 жыл бұрын
That is because you depend on food and use food to do train your puppy so your puppy is obsessed with food. You may think that your puppy is foodie but he is just not trained and is doing whatever it wants to do without you doing anything about it. Start training your puppy and start correcting it and start by watching these videos: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/n99mnKqq29XanXk.html

Hi! My beagle is 9 months old, and trust me I'm scared, he's pulling like he's a wolf, sometimes he is jumping on two legs and just goes like that.I'm using flexi so he has a lot of space to walk
@SaroDogTraining
@SaroDogTraining 3 жыл бұрын
Don't use flexi. Use a front hook harness or collar. Also, exercise or play with him before going for walk.

hello i have a 4 months old beagle puppy. I've been watching your videos since last month (we adopt a month ago). We are not walking outside of the house yet but we are walking around the house for the beginning (we've been doing it last 20 days). But when we go outside he is ignoring us. If we take his attention (i am carrying treats in my pocket and calling him), he is jumping our legs and biting hard (our legs, arms and noses have some damage :D)! There are a lot of ducks near to house and he is trying to eat duck poop always. So we have 3 bad or unwanted behaviors. So my question is that behaviors are normal for now or not? And what should we manage those. Especially eating duck poop. Thank you for your all videos by the way. They help me a lot!

Your puppy is not ready yet for enviroment with that level of distraction. Work on improving the walks indoors and hopefully you can transfer that info outdoors soon.

I do not want to frustrate and aggravate her; however some days here in the mountains it is cool and there’s lots of shade. Other days it can be extremely hot and I would prefer that she stay under the large area of land that is shaded. Also she recently began breaking into leaves eating things, tearing out grass and chewing it up and swallowing it, and consuming things I don’t think are appropriate based on the fact That we had a rough 24 hours when she must have apparently consumed something in those leaves that was not good for her. Help

As much as it needs to. If it is consuming too much, it might be due to the diet which kibble or dry food force your dog to over drink. Here is more info: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/payBe7N4p7O0ipc.html

Our beagle is TERRIBLE with walks, the entire time he tugs body low to the groud, dry heaving and foaming at the mouth. We've tried a harness, it chokes him or he slips out of it, so we got him a training collar thinking after awhile he would get the hint...failed miserably. Dog whistle doesn't work to get his attention and treats doesn't faze him either, he's to busy taking in all the smells. I can't take my dog (1.5 years old) and my son (4) on a walk by myself, it's stressful and chaotic. I think he's unteachable.
