I grew up on a farm and had two beagles, they were never good leash walkers, but we would go bum around in the woods and they would come check in every so often, but when they would chase a rabbit or tree a squirrel I had to work pretty hard to get them to come back to me. They were definitely wandering souls. We had a 300 acre spread so they were safe to roam and knew where dinner was, so they always came home to play with me when the sniffing was done.

Thank you! I’ve told people and adopters for years to remember, the walk is for the Beagle or Coonhound. They need to sniff and bawl. I’ve never before watched anyone address the needs of a Beagle walk. Glad I found your video. I only have one pocket Beagle left, plus two Foxhounds and a mostly Doberman, who does benefit from a Herm Sprenger prong collar as well as his flat collar. I use a harness on my Beagle. He had a bout of IVDD, is well recovered, and I’m careful with his spine.

You're very welcome! It's fantastic to hear that you're putting the well-being of your dogs first. Your approach to walking your Beagle and Coonhound is spot-on - allowing them to explore and bawl is vital for their happiness. It's heartening to know that my video resonated with you, especially considering your experience with these breeds. Your thoughtful consideration of your Beagle's health needs and your careful approach to his well-being are commendable. If you ever have more questions or insights to share, feel free to reach out. Wishing you and your furry companions all the best on your walks and adventures!

Great video ! I have recently started walking my friend's beagle x border collie. To begin with, he pulled so hard throughout the entire walk, so I started mixing things up during our walks. Starting off with a bit of a training walk just after leaving the house, teaching him to walk by my side without pulling. Then allowing him to walk on a loose leash so that he can sniff. I'd maybe then do a little bit more on close walking on a short leash then swap the leash for a long line (15m long) once we reached the surrounding fields and woodland. Sometimes we do field walks, sometimes woodland, sometimes just a road walk, but always mixing up the close, short leash walking, loose leash walking and being on the long line. Working with him in this way has made it easier to walk him and has reduced the pulling..until he catches the scent of, or sees a rabbit, hare, wildfowl or deer and he goes into full on beagle hunting mode. I don't let him off leash because he isn't my dog and I would hate for anything to happen if he did run off after a hare/rabbit/deer. But he always goes home happy after our 2 hour walks, walking by my side without pulling and sleeps very well once home, because he has had the mental and physical stimulation that any dog, especially a hunting breed, needs from the mix of training and sniffing I do on my walks with him.

Love how I found this all out after getting one :/ I researched and "They are friendly curious energetic blah blah blah." No mention that you can hardly walk them just stand around and let it sniff. It won't listen more then 25% of the time. It eats sticks rocks and even its poop. Prone to ear infections. It's.. wow.... Special dog. That's for sure!

I find that if I give her sniffing time for 15 minutes or so as we slowly walk out of our area, then I can get her on a good hearty walk and she enjoys it and she’s good and then every so often during a good hearty walk I will need to let us now but not too much because she’s into the walk but I have to give her that initial sniffing time. Hope that helps.

Thank you so much! I got a beagle puppy and then, shortly after, an Australian Shepherd puppy. The beagle, Tucker, is 3.5 mos and the Aussie, Sadie, is 2.5 most. Walking each of them is night and day! Sadie is super relaxed and walks quietly by my side with zero training before I adopted her. Tucker pulls pulls pulls! And while his leash walking is vastly improved (he no longer bites my ankles), I'd started to feel frustrated with him. After a few of your videos, I realized that I really didn't have the right expectations of walking a beagle. I need to give him more grace, give him a bit of a looser leash, allow him to follow his nose more.

@@SaroDogTraining I agree on that! Plus, they're still figuring out social dynamics and tend to do a lot of play fighting on the leash if I try to take them out together. I usually don't. As an update, for the last few days, I've tried a more relaxed approach to walking my beagle. Such an immediate difference! I'd say at least 65% less pulling, and I think we both are more relaxed and enjoy the time together more. Maybe he doesn't heel, and we walk in zigzag lines instead of straight ones but he's still little and there's always time to work on that more down the line. Thanks for the education!

"That will allow you to walk your beagle where you can almost control him." Operative word here is "almost". I have a picture of one of my beagles on point, standing on the branch of an oak tree 12 feet off the ground. He would run up that tree when the chipmonks would taunt him from up there incessantly. It's a great photo.

Thank you so much, I just got a 5 month old Jack A Bee. People think im nuts taking on a dog made up of two stubborn intelligent high energy dogs. Your video has shown me im making a lot of mistakes trying to train her like i did my other dogs. I have never seen such a tremendous energy output in a dog before, and while the beagle part likes to track and sniff and bay when she is on the trail, the terrier part causes her to notice everything, including birds and planes flying in the sky. Its quite a jolt to see her nose to the ground one second , then head up in the air chasing a plane or bird the next. She has separation issues, is hard to housebreak, and stubborn to listen, chews on everything hopefully because her baby teeth are coming out, including my hand. But im having the hardest time training her to recall, she just runs off and does her thing pays no attention to me calling her back. But i love her so much, she is super smart, smarter than any other dog i had except my beagle sheltie mix.

Thanks for the tips. It’s been hard to go on walks with my beagle because in my area there’s a lot of people that leave garbage and owners don’t pick up after their dogs so my beagle ends up eating it. He’s gotten sick because of it and I try my best to prevent him from eating any garbage. I try to let him sniff around freely but whenever I give him too much space he ends up eating something . I’m going to try the head halter harness and use a short leash(2ft). If there’s any tips anyone can give me it would be helpful .

Hey Saro, nice videos! I used to take my puppy beagle out for walks all the time! But he eats rabbit/hare poop and chicken bones that slln I started putting a muzzle on him specifically for doing his potty because he gets too distracted. He knows the command "Leave it" but does not want to listen when we are outside. I can take anything honestly, but I don't like him to eat poop because of possible parasitic infections. How do I get him to stop this? Please make a video or reply!!
@SaroDogTraining
@SaroDogTraining Жыл бұрын
I understand the frustration. When you say he knows the command "leave it" but does not listen when outside, it is a clear indication that he doesn't know what it exactly means. You need to make sure that he learns it and knows what it really means. That is the most common problem with dog owners that they may teach the dog something at home for not enough time and expect the dog to preform it outdoors as well. I have made a video about tis issue with some solutions. Here it is: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qrqhYK-k0dLbo3U.html

Problem I have is I always let my beagle to sniff, but he resorted to eating, glass, nails, illegal drugs, petrol lighter, woollen hat, poop bags, lolly sticks, poop, ok, I tried trading like fillet steak, chicken etc, he took the bait, never gave up what he had picked up, so swallowed both!!!! However might have made an error here by only thing asking him out twice a day, morning for two hours, afternoon for one hour???? Never had a dog aggression, people aggression, just a husband aggression when he was a puppy!!!!

That is normal. You can start working on mindfulness. The fact that you are aware that your thoughts are wondering off is a great start. All you have to do next is to start managing and controlling your thoughts to your dog. Focus on your dog and what he/she is thinking when walking, what will your dog think about to sniff...

If a dog has a strong pray drive, I would suggest to work on the basic training especially the heel and come commands to be able to control it no matter what happens. Until that happens, keep the dog on a leash or long leash and don't get tempted to off leash it. Safety comes first.

Thanks for sharing! In cases like that, you need to allow your puppy to explore the world which they do with tier mouth. Make sure that the path or the area that you choose is safe. It is OK for dogs to digest most of the stuff as long as they are natural and safe like leaves, wood but others you need to manage and control it. The first minute of the video already takes so much pressure off. You see all those people have their dogs walk with them easily and walk in a heel all the time. Meanwhile my Beagle protests all the time when I try to do that for five minutes without a valid reason (his opinion). Ive reached the same conclusion you did after years! My poor dog. Now I have him on a long leash in the forest and on a normal leash on the street. It has helped to make him aware of the pulling and to get his attention and orientation on the long leash. Nowadays he just falls into a heel when its needed, because I dont pressure him anymore. And because I dont have these unrealistic expectations anymore. Though on the dog greeting thing I do not fully agree - sometimes people dont want greetings and for those moments, you'd need a dog that has no problem with passing them then. But I agree with that dogs should je allowed to greet other dogs when its okay for everyone involved and that it shouldnt be so stigmatized at it is in some communities. Your view on this is actually quite nice, since I think that taking the pressure off and the expectations actually helps when you cant let your dog greet others. Some people get really stressed when meeting other dogs because they do not want dog meetings all the time- if you make that decision more situative, there is less pressure. In my experience.

My goodness life is about to get interesting! I just put a deposit down on an eight week old beagle puppy today. Picking up in two days time. The male pup is to be a companion dog for my eight year old son. I am being to think training a beagle is going to be simple in comparison to training my son and ex-wife to train the beagle so that we are all using the same system and treatment so the poor dog doesn’t get confused.

So I'd really love if you responded to me! We got our beagle last year as a pup. He yelps on the walks and goes crazy sniffing and wont actually walk. He pulls the leash and refuses to listen. His yelping is so loud and aggressive tracking we cant take him out as much as we want. I feel bad but I also feel neighbors are judging us by trying to pull him. He will pull so hard he will throw up. His tracking is out of hand. This is my 4th beagle and he is by far the worse when it comes to tracking. He just wont listen.

You have a hunting beagle and he is on all the time. He needs an outlet to be able to release that drive in him. I would put him in a car and drive to a park or area where I can let him just go free but attached to a long leash or long rope to do his thing and not bother the neighbours. If you are going to take him for a walk around the neighborhood, you need to make sure that you have done the basic obedience training and basic leash walking training accomplished. Have you done any formal training with him?

I have found to not use collars on a leash with mine she will hurt herself. I invested in a good comfortable harness , leave the collar for tags but I hook her on the harness. My vet told me he sees a lot of trachea injuries to dogs from collars.

How to stop people being idiots if you let your dog up to other dogs? Some people just act snobby and think you don’t have control. It’s not fair to the dog (or the human). Also, I let my dog sniff but she wants to go more and more ahead and ends up pulling.

I understand your frustration. In dog interactions, some people may misinterpret behaviors or situations. It's essential to maintain control and understanding, ensuring the safety of both dogs and humans. As long as you have control over your dog, you should be fine and be selective about the areas you take your dog for walks. Hi Saro! My biggest obstacle with my sweet beagle is wanting to eat everything on our walks. I play with him 30 minutes at lunch and after dinner, which is great, but I'm worried that he may consume something dangerous on our walks. Any suggestions to stop this behavior?

In your mental and physical training vidoes. Number 3/14 video, you are training the dog to walk next to you. So, how does that work on a 6 foot leash?

I have thought my dog to walk on a loose leash. I call it free on a loose leash walk. The dog is free to do whatever it wants as long a sit doesn't pull on the leash. You can learn more about it in my online course. sarodogtraining.com/courses/leash-walking-solutions/

Train your beagle to walk on leash and walk it on leash so you can control it. After a while the interest will fade away.

My beagle was potty trained and she’s also cage trained, but for some reason I cannot let her run through the house because if you don’t pay attention she’ll pee on the carpet she won’t bark when she wants to go outside. What do I do?

I understand your frustration with your beagle's behavior. It sounds like you've made great progress with potty training and crate training, but are facing a challenge when it comes to allowing her to roam freely in the house without accidents. In situations like this, it's important to reinforce the training and communication with your beagle. One approach you can try is to establish a consistent routine for bathroom breaks. Take your beagle outside frequently, especially after meals, playtime, or naps, and reward her with praise and treats when she eliminates outside. This will help reinforce the desired behavior and create a positive association with going outside. Additionally, consider using a verbal cue or signal when you take her outside, such as saying "outside" or ringing a bell. Over time, she may start to associate this cue with the need to go potty, making it easier for her to communicate her needs to you. If she's not alerting you when she needs to go outside, you can try teaching her a specific signal, such as scratching at the door or ringing a bell. Consistently reinforce this behavior by immediately taking her outside when she signals, and reward her for doing so. With time and consistency, she should start to understand that this behavior leads to going outside to eliminate. Remember to be patient and consistent in your training efforts. Accidents can happen, but it's important not to scold or punish your beagle for them. Instead, focus on reinforcing the desired behavior and providing positive reinforcement when she eliminates outside. If you continue to experience difficulties, it may be helpful to consult with a professional dog trainer or behaviorist who can provide personalized guidance and support based on your specific situation. They can assess your beagle's behavior and offer tailored strategies to address the issue. Stay persistent and positive in your training efforts, and with time and consistent reinforcement, you'll help your beagle overcome this challenge and enjoy a harmonious living environment.
