Excellent advice on what is a new in use material for me. Thank you very much. I have some small dentist type diamond drill bits, do you know if these would these be of any good use in drilling carbon fibre? Many thanks 👍

You should do a video on building a hand gaurd out of stock tubing using a commercial barrel nut. There is only one and it's not very good. Aero has a barrel nut that I think would be perfect.

Thanks! How about a good setup to quickly sharpen your HSS drill bits? I imagine that would be cheaper but more hassle. I figure even for carbide you need to sharpen eventually. And probably need a diamond wheel or something.
@SasquatchComposites
@SasquatchComposites 2 жыл бұрын
I know that people do sharpen HSS bits, but I've honestly never done it. The idea of having to sharpen my drill bit after every 1-2 holes sounds exhausting, so I really doubt I ever will. But maybe I'm wrong. Maybe the process is much quicker than I thought.

Great video, very helpful. Can I ask do you use a slow or fast drill speed when drilling carbon fibre?
@SasquatchComposites
@SasquatchComposites 2 жыл бұрын
According to Panamerica Tool (where I ordered my drill bits), the ideal speed is 3000 to 5000 RPM.

Hello, I got a 2500 hundred dollar carbon fiber Hood. I got to drill holes that at about 5/8 of an inch wide for the hood pins. I bought a 5/8 diamond hole saw bit. Any suggestions?

Would these be recommended for Kevlar as well?

I’m needing to drill in 5mm and 4mm 3K Toray CF. It’s for my 1/7 high speed RC. I not only need tp drill a dozen holes for M2.5 and M3 hardware, I need to countersink as well. Any suggestions? Thanks for posting this video. I don’t want to ruin my CF chassis or at least have a bunch of holes that blew out on the other side.

Any carbide countersink should do fine. You can use a high speed steel countersink, too, but it will likely be very dull by the time you get to your last holes. They make countersinks with depth stops that won't let you punch all the way through. Best of luck :)

Is it possible to drill a hole in a carbon fiber flag pole in order to have a screw through it for mounting? Will the carbon hold up?

Thanks. That is very helpful. But, it is possible to add threads (for bolt) into Carbon fiber body. I have 1/2" thick carbon fiber sailboat mast which i need to connect a breaket to, via bolts. Or, is it better to connect via rivets. Many thanks
@scottthroop6208
@scottthroop6208 4 ай бұрын
Probably too late for this, but I would suggest using rivet nuts. They work similar to pop rivets but it leaves you with a metal threaded hole. Use the aluminum versions vs steel to avoid potentially stress cracking the mast.

Any thoughts on diamond ceramic type bits?
@SasquatchComposites
@SasquatchComposites 2 жыл бұрын
I've used diamond ceramic hole saws for making large holes over 1" in diameter, and I've seen diamond ceramic rotary bits, and they work great. But I haven't seen a drill bit with diamond ceramic.

I usually just run a reamer bit through my parts and then a quick hit with a countersunk bit to clean up any burrs. I like the water trick tho. I'll see if that makes a difference on any of my stuff.
@SasquatchComposites
@SasquatchComposites 2 жыл бұрын
There's also a water-based lubricant designed specifically for drilling in composites without contaminating the surface for future bonding. Can't remember the name of it, but it's a light blue and has the consistency of Working Hands moisturizer. It replaces the function of the water here.

@@ajhartmanaero I found it. It's called "Boelube", I think because it was developed by Boeing. I've used this stuff in aerospace shops for drilling carbon laminates and it's good stuff. Not cheap, though. www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/cspages/boelube4.php

Do I need this to drill through wood that is skinned with carbon fibre and Kevlar? There is one layer of each on either side of the wood and the epoxy of course.
