Saucony Peregrine 12 Review. It's no KZfaq secret that I have been a big fan of the Saucony Peregrine shoe over the years. I spent a lot of time out on the trails in Peregrine 10 and 11 and enjoyed every mile. It's always a nervous time when a running shoe you really enjoy is getting a big update. After our first impressions video I was pretty impressed with the new updates and I've put some good mileage into the shoe since then. So sit back, enjoy the review and find out if the Peregrine 12 has continued to impress.
Really hope you enjoy the video, thanks for watching, we'll see you in the next video and as always - stay safe and keep on running!

I’m just a basic runner and I believe these will be perfect for my runs . I didn’t realise how complicated running is. what holds you back is finding the right affordable & good gear just to go running In. So I’ve been looking for the right trail trainers for where I live different terrain everywhere & I go running on wet muddy days with also loads of rocky roads . Cheers for the review.

Hearing all the good things on those Peregrines, but my first encounter with the Peregrine series has been 10STs, which makes me a bit unbeliever in them. But still the look is so dope! Also, great review Loyd, well done and many thanks! Cheers!

I prefer the standard version of the Peregrines, I think the grip is more consistent on a big mix of terrain. The ST version could be a bit slippy on wet rock and tarmac. Thanks for watching Vlad, I'm glad you enjoyed the video 🙏😊

Hey! Thank you for the detailed review. I watched your video prior to ordering my first Peregrine 12s. I'm a bigger dude at 6 feet tall and 210 pounds. I am also a veteran and current SWAT officer. I said that to say that due to their sure-footed nature and ability to perform in inclement weather as well as less permissive terrain, the Peregrine 12s are one of my go-to footwear choices while in uniform. I enjoy running and competing in obstacle course races as well. The Peregrine 12s perform well in my opinion. Theyve done everything I've asked them to do. They are fantastic trail shoes first and foremost. They have the right balance of stability and support. The traction is outstanding here in the rocky limestone and clay soil of Missouri. On paved roadways they perform well without a lot of punishment which was surprising to me given the aggressive outsole and lugs. I am excited that my next pair of P12s will arrive later today. I ordered them for approximately $70 which I believe is about £55. What a difference a couple years makes in pricing. I'm not someone who always looks for the newest shoe so when I find one I like, I just purchase it again when I need to. I can't wait to beat the trail when my next pair of Peregrine 12s arrive. Cheers from Jackson, Missouri!

Not long had my first pair of Peregrines (10) and I am impressed with their versatility. Loads of life left in them, but the 12s look wicked for when it comes to replacing them. Not tried Torrents but used to run in Hoka speedgoats pretty much everywhere except in really muddy conditions, but after 3 ankle sprains, I have to say I definitely prefer being closer to the ground on uneven terrain. Great review!

3 runs in my 12's now just over 55km in them. Did 17km yesterday on Helvellyn in snow and frozen ground on the way down. The weight saving over the 11s and 10's is really noticeable. The fit is a tad closer around the foot on the upper and so far I think it's a firmer ride. It's going to be a great shoe for Saucony for sure.

@@adamsheret149 The current Saucony Xodus 11. They have more cushioning as Loyd pointed out for longer distances. I ran a 100k ultra in my Peregrine 10 and it got pretty uncomfortable after 40 miles. The Peregrine are fantastic up to 50km, probably the best trail shoe in my opinion up to that distance. The Xodus shine one the long runs, very comfortable, and i am looking forward to the Xodus Ultra, which promises to be lighter than the current version.

I like the peregrines and have been running with the Peregrine 11s in the Pyrenees the last year. I have had to move away from them however due to the low drop which was putting a lot of pressure on my achilles, particularly in climbs. I have now moved to the ASIC Trabuco, which while not my favourite trail shoe, it is a decent shoe and has taken the pressure off of my achilles.
@Run4Adventure

When you are going up those long climbs Antonio sometimes a bit more off set can really help. It allows you to get your heels down on the trails and that takes a lot of load of the lower leg and the Acillies 👍 Thanks for watching 🙏

At the moment I prefer my 10s (700kms)... just finding the fit of the 12s a bit more voluminous despite sizing down a half size. I also have a second pair of Scarpa Spin Ultras (950km in the first) that I'm leaning towards as my favourite mud, mountain and tech terrain vs buffed trail shoes at the moment.

I never did get around to buying the Peregrine 10 or 11. I was also weighing the idea of choosing the ST or the normal version because of the kind of mud we get over the fields where I run most, but was questioning the tread.. however the new 12 has the same tread pattern and compound as the normal version, I finally took the plunge and bought a very bright yellow pair 😬👍🏼 Had to go half a size down for the fit, and took my first run in them today. Have to say fairly comfortable, but definitely notice the reduced padding, and I think the sole is firmer than shoes I’m used to. Did an 8 in them around to usual trails and ended up with a small hot point on my right little toe.. hopefully they’ll settle down after a few more runs 😬.. Wasn’t sure about the feel of the quick lace at first, as it tends to clamp around the upper foot more than I’m used to, but by the end of my run, feel ok.. hopefully I’ll still be saying after Keswick16 and eventually the Snowdon Marathon I bought them for 😂😬. Thanks for the great review as always Loyd.. good luck with the full time plan 👍🏼🤞🏽

Not to bad. It’s hard trying to find an independent shop with stock at the moment due to delays etc . Managed to find one in Bristol that had the peregrine’s in my size. Tried them on and they felt brilliant so bought them for £115 which was good 👍 going out today on Woodbury common near where I live to give them a test. 👍 My partner had trainer envy but couldn’t find any in her size to try. She ended up buying some Scott Supertrac ultra RC which look good for more sloppy off road runs . 👍

Got into the Peregrines because of your reviews. Had the 10s for years then replaced them with the 12s. The durability has taken a massive downturn if mine are the norm. The upper has holes at the arches. Are the 13s any better? The 10s lasted ages. Thanks for the reviews, very helpful especially for trail running

I haven't used the Peregrines since the 5th / 6th edition due to massive weight gain. 40 to 50grams is a lot in case of a shoe. Now we got closer to the origins with this 275g very simplified model. A technical, light and nimble, sky running style shoe, great for scrambling and bombing down on steep rocky slopes. As you say I also find that the heel counter might be an issue for some with bigger than usual heel spurs or simply very bony heels. For me the shoe can handle the difficulties up to like 60km with a lot of elevation gain and loss, but most likely to shorter very fast technical races. However I would definitely not take this to a simple trail !!! running !!! race. There are more specific lighter and more flexible options to that. Like the TNF flight Vectiv, Superior or a road shoe. Every baby has it's speciality. I love the Peregrine 12 and it's climbing ability.
@Run4Adventure
@Run4Adventure 2 жыл бұрын
The weight loss is definitely a positive move for the Peregrine and I'm loving the more responsive ride. You're right there's definitely better shoes for just running on buffed out dry trails but the Peregrine 12 will still do that ok. However I wouldn't want to run the Flight Vectiv's on a muddy, boggy trail! 😲 Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment it's appreciated 🙏

Hi Loyd, thanks for the great shoe videos. I just got a pair of Peregrine 12’s and was wondering what you thought about these compared to something like the Inov-8 Rocklite G 275 or similar shoe. I have a similar Inov-8 shoe that I got 15 years ago. I live in Phoenix, AZ and we have several small mountains around that we hike. They are not nice soft tree lined trails. They are dry, hard, rocky to the point that sometimes you are walking across the tops of small boulders, etc. It is difficult to run up because the trails are steep, but I sprint down. I’m wondering how the Peregrines will hold up in that environment as they feel like a running shoe with cleats, but still soft and a little roomy, whereas the Inov-8’s are clearly made for more extreme environments. Thanks for any info you can provide.

I managed to sneak 18km into my new 12's before heading off to the Ring of Fire 73 course here in New Zealand. I planned to use them on the first 23km section which is super technical, affectionately called The Goat. You've got groomed trail at the beginning in native bush, transitioning into a very rocky volcanic/alpine environment with lots of steep climbs and descents. A good number of rocky river crossings are thrown in for fun. I'm interested to see how this shoe pans out longer term, everything felt great in the 18k run in period (probably not quite long enough), but on the steep climbs I felt the heel cup was extremely hard on the back of my foot and attachment point for my achilles. After about 15k I knew my left foot would be grumpy by the time I saw my wife at 27km for a makeshift aid station. It's possible that the socks I was wearing contributed to things a bit... in any case I was extremely glad to switch into my Topo MTN Racer 2's for the next 46km of volcanic running. I really hope the shoe pans out for me, because it's bloody nice in every other way, but maybe they took a bit too much padding out of the lower portion of the heel cup.

I bought the Peregrine 12s on a whim and I have put in around 100km on them, here is my 2cents/ They are very light which is nice, the traction is so/so, I run in Scott Supertrac Ultra normally so I guess I am a bit spoiled on the traction side, but where I live and run there are alot of rainy days and exposed roots and slippery rocks, I need traction. I can sacrifice a little weight for security. The Peregrines are surprisingly good on the slippery rocks but my heel has almost come out a few times in deeper mud and that doesn't exactly inspire confidence. Speaking about mud, the uppers offer little protection from the elements, they do drain nicely but if you step in mud it's wet socks straight away. The fit is good right out of the box and the only bad thing I have noticed is I get a hot spot under the ball of my foot around 10-12km. Not alot of cushion in there either. I would think half marathon at best. The minimal drop is nice and I love it on my treadmill shoes and flatground shoes but for the mountains I like the drop of the Supertracs. I just received a pair of the new Scott Kinbalu Ultras for the next SkyMar, looking forward to seeing how they run but it's hard to pull me away from the Supertrac Ultras ☺️

Can't say my Peregrine 10 has held up well. I totally destroyed the upper and I'm not even at 400km. It ripped on several spots where the mesh meets the overlays and it keeps ripping. Impressed with the grip but the upper could've been made more resilient. I bet it depends on the weight of the runner and the kind of trails you do. (I'm 75kg and have used the Peregrine on a lot of extreme downhill and muddy terrain in 2021). I think the weave in the 12 might be stronger but we'll see. I'm planning on retiring the 10 soon.

I'm now onto the Xodus Ultra which is great so far we'll see how they fair through winter but happy so far and the slightly wider fit might also help with durability as it's always in the same place near the outer edge of my little toe that shoes go first.

Hey great review, I found your channel recently due to your Brooks cascadia 16 review. Now I've always done a bit of running but more causally and can go months without a run, I recently picked up the Glyncerin 19 for my runs which I really like. I walk a lot for work maybe 15-20 km everyday and found my soles wear out pretty fast, I decided to try hike style shoes but wanted something that was comfortable with a good tread so I decided to try trail running shoes. I have the brooks cascadia 16 gtx and really enjoy walking in them...my feet feel really snug and warm and comfortable ( wide foot ) though my Glycerins and mizuno wave skyrise 2 Amsterdam are more comfortable. I'm looking for a second pair of walking trainers and I'm liking the look of these, How would you rate the peregrine if used as a everyday walking trainer are the treads/lugs on the sole durable and how would you compare the fit to the cascadia 16 ? Really glad you're enjoying your Cascadias Jason 👍 The Peregrine would work as an everyday hiking/walking shoe but it is definitely narrower than the Cascadia. I actually found the Cascadia a bit wide for my footshape and I did move around a bit in the upper. The Peregrine fits and holds my foot a lot better. @chrisshaw2810

That's a bit like asking whether it would be ok to drive in city traffic in a rally car. I mean you could, but it would be hard and unforgiving, and you would very quickly wish you were in an executive saloon. I haven't run in P12's, so therefore can't answer your specific question about these shoes, but I would expect them to be really rather uncomfortable after a few miles just on tarmac, plus you would have worn the tread down so much you wouldn't be able to run on trails in them either after that!
@Run4Adventure
@Run4Adventure 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Charlie, glad you enjoyed the video. I think Chris has answered your question, thanks Chris 👍 You can run a road marathon in any shoe and the Peregrine 12's would do it but why would you want to? It's a trail shoe and it's designed to run on a big mix of trail conditions and handle a bit of tarmac now and again. A road marathon is a very different thing! Always best to go with something that's fit for purpose, especially when running a road marathon. Hope this helps and thanks for watching the channel it's appreciated 🙏😊

Hi, I'm new to running and just been to a shoe shop today that unfortunately had very limited shoes in my size. The hoka mafate speed 3 fit me really nicely but the excessive cushioning worried me as I have very weak ankles prone to rolling. So I'm now considering these or the salomon speedcross 5 . I would really appreciate if you could give me some advice please. I live in the Lake district so I really like the traction on the speedcross 5
@Run4Adventure
@Run4Adventure 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Laura I would personally say if you feel you are prone to rolling your ankles, I'd stay away from deep midsoled trail shoes. You are always going to loose some connection and ground feel in something like a Mafate 👍 I've never been a fan of the Speedcross, it runs of a 10mm heel off set and that's high for a trail shoe. I've alway found the heel hight can cause some instability issues. The Peregrine isn't going to offer you the cushioning of the Hoka but it would definitely give you lots of connection to the trails and the grip is brilliant, so that might help with confidence 😊 Hope this helps and thanks for watching the channel it's really appreciated 🙏

It's a tricky one and I'd actually recommend two pairs of shoes for that distance and terrain! A trail shoe for the trails and a road shoe for the tarmac. I have saucony guides that I have run in for 10years including the poor iso versions. when I got my perragrines they were fine on my 1st run, since then I can do a.couple of miles fine. But once I get into 3+ miles I get hot spot.And running especially on my right foot. I have tried loosening of and re-tightening the laces but to no avail, I have also used Vaseline in the area but this doesn't help much just delays the inevitable blister. I think the hot spot is around the area the tounge on the inside of the show drops down to the bottom of the shoe. Any thoughts? Thank you.

I totally agree, the ISO Guide was a terrible running shoe! 😔 It's tricky but I'd say if the right shoe causes issues and the left doesn't, maybe it's a manufacturing issue? Sorry to hear that you're not getting on with your Peregrines but I can assure you that everything is thoroughly tested on the channel before it's reviewed. I've had the last 3 models of Peregrines and they have all handled the rocky trails I run on really well, whether they're wet or dry. Obviously I'm in Cornwall and I never tested them out in Ireland on the trails that you run on but they definitely work well here. As far as the Speedcross goes when it comes to grip on wet rock, it's pretty bad on the Cornish Coast! One of the most inconsistent outsoles I've ever run with. I'd always go for a Peregrine before the Speedcross any day of the week! Trail running shoes are so personal and what works for one might not work for the other. I actually run with a group of runners every week and I'd say 80% of them wear Peregrines because of the great grip on the outsole 👍
