That thing is not just a mace, what you've crafted is the staff of the 1st wizard, the scepter of the greatest fallen maiar and Morgoth's heir on Middle Earth... In all seriousness you guys do incredible work. I know how much hard work goes into working those tools and you've always put such quality into your work. Well done.

Adventures in Forging yeah, but so is Sauron, so for a human Sauron sized, say about 8 to 9 foot, it would be pretty useable.

anything that big is obviously gonna do some damage. Especially when you consider that a normal mace for humans is about the size of a hammer. The weight especially wouldn't be much more than that of a normal hammer. And the damage that would do even against armor is incredible. So size that up 25 times and you can't imagine the damage that does.

A mace is actually a relatively good weapon. Requires little training. Less skill needed than a bladed weapon. Fighting a spear? Smash the handle. Fighting a sword? Break the blade. Can't get past a shield? Beat against it until the arm on the other side shatters. Swords are just a lot more famous and elegant, but I think if I was ever stuck in medieval times, I would go for a mace.

Uhh, no. Yes, it requires less training, but even still. You can be defeated with any weapon. If a mace was much better and beating enemies was as easy as you seem to think it is, no other weapons would've even been used.

I never said it was better. Any weapon can be deadly if the user is skilled enough. Bo staffs, arrows, daggers and knives. I just said I would rather use a mace than I would a sword if I, myself, was forced to choose.

Maces are used for denting armour. Someone with a spear could simply stab the dude with the mace for a distance. Swords are used wit agility and speed to inflict damage, not bash the other dude with the blunt side.

A mace is used for smashing things, be they weapons, armor, shields, bones or heads. Ans since most armor was designed to deflect blades, a good solid blow would send most of the impact through the armor. But as I explained before, the usefulness of a weapon is dependent on its wielder. A blind master with a bo staff could out fight a street thug with a knife. That's a given. And as I also explained before, I, personally, would rather use a mace or hammer than a sword or spear.

In the books, it's a mace though, so I assume it would be significantly more practical. Plus, the Witch-King has basically unlimited strength, considering he doesn't have a physical form.

The mace that the captain Black Hammer has from game Shadow of Mordor would be an awesome build. It is similar to Sauron except that each flange is made to resemble a miniature skeleton.

A one-handed mace always seemed my first pick in real combat, but a two-handed mace might be even better. It's slower, but one hit will obliterate anything. No edge alignment, no fancy tricks, armor won't work, with this you'll just bash right through flesh, steel and bone. Maybe a two-handed mace backed by a one-handed shortsword... That'd be really good.

Neither a one-handed mace nor a two-handed mace would be any good in a 1v1 situation and even less viable in a 1v2 or more fight. In duels, quickness wins, always. If you were to swing at someone with a two-handed mace, unless you hit them in the skull, (which you wouldn't unless they were extremely uncoordinated) you would then die because they have an extremely high amount of time to stab you or cut you.

***** Parrying isn't even an issue. You have to wind up so much with a big heavy tool like this that someone with a lighter sword can kill you before you even manage to start your attack.

for lore reference the mace was called Grond, in homage to 'Grond, hammer of the underworld' the original warmace of Morgoth or Melkor prior to his fall to darkness, (Morgoth being the original dark lord and saurons master), as well as naming the great siege breaker by the same name that broke the gates of minas tirith in the return of the king portion of the storyline.

Eren Jaeger No one wants swords with spines or runes or jewels everywhere. Simple stuff can look cool. For example, Pyramid Head's sword looks cool.

LightSchiffer True, but it's literally just a sword. The only thing worthy of mention would be the scales on the side of the blade. Other than that it's nothing but sentimental value for those who watch the anime. There'd be no interesting commentary since it'd be one of the easiest things they've ever made and that makes for a very boring video. And don't get me wrong, I dont want spines, runes or jewels everywhere. I just don't want them to start doing generic shit swords. And that includes Pyramid head's sword too.

They used some solid stuff for Thor's hammer as well, if memory serves me. It's easier to get away with when you have a weapon made for crushing instead of slicing.

A sword against a cinder block is not going to do anything except damage the sword. A sledgehammer (which is what this is, in terms of weight and battle functionality) against a cinder block is an appropriate test. If you're using something to smash a cinder block, it's too heavy to wield in battle. The human skull is nowhere near as strong and making your mace too heavy would only tire you out and make your movements way too slow. That said, this was never meant to be a functional weapon, only as a decoration.

NowhereManForever thats if you hit the skull. Heavy armors need to be dammaged too when you do a bodyshot, so it must crush the armor and the torso

Yeah, they're not really that strong, other than in the orientation they are supposed to be. I made a chain mace using a decorative cast iron ball, back years ago, and it busted up a cinder block pretty easily.

Each episode of Reforged seems to get a bit better than the last. I'm particularly fond of the in-depth detail about blacksmithing, fabrication decisions, and unusual techniques, such as the roping discussed in this episode. I'll never get bored hearing about that stuff.

Grond is one of my favorite fantasy weapons. It's a mace, but the flanges are also hybridized as axe blades, which are long enough at the top for the user to spear people with. It's beautiful.

Ulfberhts are somehow legendary swords, and I suppose than can be attributed to the amazing metallurgy that goes into them. I watched the PBS documentary on them, and analyzations of the steel indicated the perfect amount of carbon in the blade to make it resilient and hard but also flexible. These blades were even better than the European broadswords that came centuries later, but the reason they would be so difficult to reproduce is because very VERY few original Ulfberhts exist today, and their method of production and recipe for the perfect steel has been lost over time. Still, if they can pull it off, I would be ecstatic.

Angry_Megatron The only thing that made Ulfberhts so good was the purity of the steel. Nowadays, we can make steel so pure that it puts Ulfberht to shame.

Vojtěch Martinec Unless you're talking about mail with plates in it, like what is seen in parts of eastern Europe and India, there is no such thing as plate mail. However, full plate armor, which is what I assume yo're talking about, isn't nearly as restrictive as people think. A man in battle needs to be able to run, jump and so on, and any armor that prevented a man from doing so wouldn't have been used. A normal flanged mace weighs about 1 to 1.5 kg and does a fine job at fighting full plate armor. Hell, even something as light as a sword pummel can mess up a guy wearing plate. That sword you're talking about sounds like an over sized ceremonial piece, which wouldn't be that odd. Outlandish ceremonial weapons and armor are seen all over the world.

Kyle allen Claymores are a type of great sword and fit in to the 2 to 3kg range for great swords. Also, Wallace is a national hero of Scotland. They've even made some movies about him.

EarthKrusher i was talking about the whole Man at Arms series. I watch them because the final product is pretty cool, but the process is quite a bit dissapointing. For example, the jedi katana they made was laser cutted to be curved and they didn't use tamahagane steel or different steels for the edge and the rest of the blade.

Amazing Mace!! I like the Spiked Mace in Conan The Destroyer yielded by Bombaata (Wilt Chamberlain). All the replicas I've seen are nothing close :(

Mr Bolter Correction, it would be *absolutely* impossible to use. I remember reading some numbers on it. If it's made out of solid iron, as was stated in the manga, it would weigh close to a thousand pounds. That's like half of a VW Beetle being swung around. In the old PS2 game, a single swing takes about a whole second (although, in the manga he allegedly moves too fast for the human eye). Given the length of the sword, the tip of the sword going through the arc is traveling about 30 feet per second. When Guts sends that thing flying, it's literally like a car crash on a stick. The only question left is how he keeps himself rooted on the ground instead of having the momentum of it carry him up and through the air. XD

LOL i'd love to see that but holy shit, it would be impossible to even forge. The table would break in half because of the weight. (not really, but i doubt their equipment could house something so heavy and big ) That thing weights at least 60 kilos (more like 100 if you take it's relative size into account). It's like being hit by a sack of cement at running speed. Just by bit hit you'd surely be thrown into the air. Tony had troubles with the buster sword already, this one is even bigger and bulkier, they'll need at least three persons to move it like in the manga.
