I have a feeling that Toyota's just building great platforms such as this Corolla, the 86/BRZ/FRS, and the upcoming Supra, and is leaving it to the community to create whatever they want. The 86/BRZ/FRS is a prime example of that

Just bought one of these about a month ago with all the same options. Great review. The fake exhaust tips suck but that and the infotainment are really the only things I would change about this car. Not everyone needs a ton of horsepower, gas mileage and reliability are super important. It flat out looks better than a lot of the competition, the interior is very upscale for its class, and driving slow cars fast is more fun anyways because you get to keep your license. Also, I'm glad you reviewed one without the spoiler because it looks better that way!

This was the most thorough, reasonable, and knowledgeable review I've seen of the new Corolla Hatchback. The observations regarding the CVT, with a demonstration of how quickly it shifts ratios using a closeup of the tach, were especially appreciated, along with the discussion of its "combined injection," and the tour of the well-protected underside areas. 'Lots of very useful additional impressions, as well, and nice video production quality.

The new trend of popout oriented nav screens has nothing to do with being cheap and everything to do with being driver centric. You want to be able to see the display at a glance for navigation. By mounting the display high you no longer have to shift your eyes off the horizon to read the screen. You just quickly scan from left to right to get the information you need. Molding the nav screen into the dash produces silly sloped angles with lots of glare that require you to practically lean your head to the side sometimes if the steering wheel is obstructing it. I love the popup nav screens that are right up in my sight line.

Thank you for this review, I really appreciate you going over what really matters in a vehicle, like it’s engine and transmission and drivetrain, how it’s all made and put together. I love how simple and reliable the engine is, easy to work on. I seriously love this car, I adore the fact it’s a hatchback. It’s everything I could possibly want in a vehicle, it has all the technology I’ll ever need without being overly complicated or on reliable in the future. I plan on getting an XSE in silver with the automatic because the better mpg, tho the manual version looks really fun. I’ll keep this car forever. And I know it’d last over 200,000+ miles with regular maintenance no problem. I know I’ll get a lot of use out of a car like this. That’s what I look for in a vehicle.

Watching this again after now having driven both the manual and the CVT. WOW! Very impressed. I prefer the manual, but my kids have no desire to learn and it’s primarily for them, but also so I can have some fun. The CVT is the best I’ve ever used as well. I’ve owned everything from a 1986 Toyota Corolla with a 5-speed (first car that I learned on) to a Porsche with a manual and everything in between. This is a fun car to drive! It is the definition of “slow car that you can push 100%, stay within the speed limit, more or less, and have a blast!” I actually enjoy driving it over my Porsche Boxster that I sold. Haven’t purchased yet because I’m still trying to convince my kids to learn manual!!

I just drove this car yet again (The CVT SE model) after driving a bunch of other cars and putting some time between drives to make sure my initial impressions were accurate. I have to say, this is an incredibly fun car to drive and looks great! I’m still on the fence between the CVT and manual. As we’re going down to 2 cars, my wife wouldn’t be able to drive the manual (she’s not very good with an auto so no chance)....But, the CVT is a blast as well with the paddle and a physical first gear. I can’t get over how good this car is for the price point. I will say it again, this car is more fun to drive than my Porsche Boxster I had within legal speed limits. My Boxster felt blasé until you get well over the speed limit when it came alive...second gear and you’re already over legal limits. The Corolla lets you click through 10 gear ratios, and you can do them all while still not going over the speed limit!

We just drove the xse hatch. Wife is wanting a Honda fit, cvt unfortunately. I took her to drive this. We both really liked it. I didn't care for how lightweight the steering is. It handled well and was comfortable, which is what we want/need. She was still sold on it and it's her car but the deal breaker was the rear seating room. We have a 5 year old and her legs would be smushed into the back of the driver seat when I drive and I'm only 5'-10". Moving her side to side is not an ideal option. The rear hatch space is also very lacking for grocery day. Yes the rear seats fold down but again not ideal with a kid. If there was a smidge rear seat room we would have bought it. The frozen white paint looks amazing too. For someone without kids, looking for something that drives nice, handles well and you want good gas mileage and a little funky at the same time, go for it!

Exactly right on the children and foot space. A child in a booster or car seat - their feet are high up and poke into the back of the front seat - actually take up more space than an average adult because their feet aren't on the floor, under the front seat. I'm not tall either and I test drove it with my child and it just didn't work. That's a deal breaker and really too bad because I really liked it otherwise.

Nodak81 no, the fit completely out space this corolla, you can tell by just looking at the rear design on both cars, fit is basically a smaller family van, I'm 6 2 and I can sit comfortably behind my driver seat, also its a manual so I need more leg room in the front for clutch, the rear seats of fit not only folds down to create more trunk space, but also folds up to create more rear floor space

As a recent owner of this car(SE upgrade trim), I was hoping to see your review before buying, cause I would like to see the underbody, but couldn't wait anymore since winter is coming in Canada. So far really enjoy this car. Here are some pros and cons I found. Pros: Exterior and interior look great CVT feels great at launching Lots of safety features Made in Japan( if it means anything) Apple carplay! (you need to pay extra to get it on Mazda3s and civic? not sure) More power than the 2.0 Mazda 3 155vs168 It's a Toyota so less cost for maintenance Bronze colour looks so nice for me at least. Cons: Rear and trunk space is not big at all, compared to Mazda 3 hatch or civic hatch The sound system is just ok sounding No backup sensor and projections (back up camera is standard) Could use another 20 or more horsepowers The Dunlop tires seem to generate a lot of noise. Not a great choice as a family car due to the lack of space, but a great car for a couple or a single driver

Can't tell you how much I appreciate the review of the SHOPPE! As a 2020 Corolla owner it's great to see how sealed up the underside is, thanks for showing us. I was curious how the stock tires would do in snow, based in Boston I was able to get by with 3-4 inches of snow on the road. What more could you expect from "all seasons". Traction control is pretty smart compared to my previous Jetta.

I bought a SE CVT in part because of your review. This was an addition to my 2012 Matrix. The engine having port injection is a huge draw for me. The lack of forced induction is(surprisingly) a huge draw for me. The dedicated first gear in the CVT is a huge draw for me. The updated suspension is a huge draw for me. I did wait until cars on the lot were manufactured after the CVT recall, and even then only a handful were affected. My observations: -Gas mileage has been higher than advertised. This may just be my grandpa style driving. Perhaps it was tuned after ratings were established.(I've had 43.4 split highway/city, gets best RPM and mileage around 55-60mph) -Being on the CH-R architecture makes this handle obnoxiously well. The corolla hatch is shorter, thinner and weighs less than CH-R. Using the same base structure is CRAZY. -Having a first gear in a CVT now feels like a must. This works so well and is incredibly handy. -I don't understand the point of paddle shifters or sport mode. Again, maybe this is my grandpa style driving. -Interior feels like a Lexus from 7 years ago, aside from the cloth seating. While having an infotainment system from a Lexus from 7 years ago is rough, I like the general layout and feel. -Lost the Matrix C-Pillar windows, but they were pretty much useless. Gained A-Pillar windows, not sure if helpful but it is something I guess. -The engine will run port in park. This is something I observed at the dealership when viewing the car in the lot. I noticed the lines for port injection begin to shake(was consistent with all of the other engines) after setting in park for a few minutes. I'm guessing direct is used for start up. -The SE was cheaper than my 2012 Matrix, and offers far more than I could have expected in a Corolla Hatchback 7 years ago. Other notes. I wish SE had option for fog lights without upgrading trim to XSE. Fog lights are the only feature of XSE appealing to me. Increased price of XSE trim was not worth it to me for this option. But if you want Dual zone AC and heated seats, go for it. I want to believe in this engine. Its new, which is scary. But, the tech in this engine has been used in Lexus and Toyota trucks for some time and Toyota probably has it figured out. Let's just hope this engine comes with the same refinement as the 2ZR engine.

As always, a very thorough and balanced review. Thanks for providing such an in depth analysis. This is probably now the best car out there for people that don’t really want to think about cars and/or really only care about going from Here to There. Once they put the Corolla sedan on the TNGA platform, the big T might have to ramp down Camry production even further as I think those will fly off dealer lots. I, for one, am pleased with the dimensions of this little hatch. It is sized perfectly for a 99% of the time solo driver who never goes to IKEA and doesn’t haul dead bodies into the Pine Barrens. It’s refreshing to see the Big T not try to create a “CUV replacement” but rather stick to doing a classic (almost) old school hatchback. The only thing about this car that curls my upper lip a little: that damn “floating tablet”. Toyota are even doing it in their flagship Avalon (although less ostentatiously than here) so it can’t all be about cost-cutting can it? Someone over there must think it looks good. I have a theory that there is an ongoing wager between the “head unit team” and the “grille team” to see who can get away with the most hideous designs. The head unit guys win on Corolla. The grille guys win on Avalon.

I love my Toyota Corolla Hatchback. I live on a bumpy road so I've bottomed out a couple times, but the CVT with the jump gear, the adaptive cruise control, the styling, and the fit and finish make it a great package. The mileage doesn't quite match the EPA estimates, but it's still very good. It's more sport than utility, as the hatch isn't very spacious. And while the sound system and infotainment console are good, it doesn't yet have Android Auto. Every car has its compromises. Here I sacrificed space over styling (get the Fit or Mazda3 for luggage capacity) and I wish had a couple inches of ground clearance (get the HR-V or Crosstrek instead). This car has solid acceleration and an impressive tech package for a great price. I miss my manual Fit Sport occasionally, except when I'm in traffic, which is most of the time. I have zero regrets. The Hyundai Kona Electric looks enticing, but it's out of my price range. Zero regrets!!!

I've owned a Corolla... 2007 base manual transmission. Loved it overall, but after 6 fords, three GM's and two Chrysler's, I've got a Subaru Impreza hatchback and absolutely love it. Hands down, its the best car I've ever purchased. So even though the rola looks like Darth Vader at the front, my one question is when the hell is Toyota going to start thinking about awd??? If they did so I would probably have one. I live in the snow belt northwest. Subaru just makes perfect sense. Make some competition for crying out loud....

Fantastic car! Love that blue color and glad that they are putting the effort in with making the CVT more sportier. I would definitely consider getting one in XSE trim in either stick or CVT if (A) the screen position with a bit lower, (B) real dual exhaust out the back, and (C) about 30 more horsepower. I love the look of this hatchback more so than the Fiesta ST and Veloster Ns. And it definitely has my eye when they make it have a bit more power.
