Savannah, GA is home to some of the nation's most beautiful, beguiling, and historic cemeteries. This 2009 release from filmmaker Michael Jordan explores Bonaventure Cemetery, Conolian Park Cemetery, Laurel Grove Cemetery (North & South), Catholic Cemetery, Jewish Cemeteries, Duelists' Graves, Missing Graves, Civil War & Revolutionary War Burials, Savannah's unique above-ground crypts, strange epitaphs & altered inscriptions, and mystery graves, plus the graves of Juliette Gordon Low, the Waving Girl, and the composer of "Jingle Bells."

It's where the wealthier citizens of GA vacation. We also went to summer camp in Savannah, as kids. I liked fishing ^ crabbing in the Savannah River, and watching the dolphins swim past us.

I had the privilege to work for the City of Savannah cemetery dept and helped organize the records for Laurel Grove both North and South. Most interesting job I've ever had. I'd walk through the cemetery on my breaks. Never felt more aware of our history.

Sounds like a job I would love to do❤ I have not been able to go to Savannah yet but it's on my bucket list. Will definitely have to explore this cemetery! Just stunning gravestones and the history found in the cemetery is what tickles my fancy. I just find all old-time cemetery art amazing and breath-taking in some cases 😊

It was once a plantation home. And burned down during a dinner party, not uncommon in the days of candles, and later donated to Savannah. It already had family graves on it.

I'm from NYC and had the privilege of visiting Savannah twice in 2017 and 2021. Colonial Park Cemetery is four blocks from my hotel The Planters Inn. I visiting the Cemetery several times during my stays. Regardless of who is buried in which tomb; what's important is that individuals are being honored and remembered. It's the Life which are celebrated not the bones.

Bonaventure is beautiful in spring when the azaleas bloom. My grandparents are buried there. And the Colonial cemetary has many interesting and historical sites. And the old Candler hospital where I was born dates back to the 1800's and has all kinds of ghost stories associated with it. The best way to see Savannah is to take a walk through the squares. I used to walk from Taylor St. To the river with my little cousins and step grandma and we'd stop in Forsyth Park and feed peanuts to the pigeons and squirrels. If you've never been to Savannah go there. You won't be disappointed either by the restaurents

I love the genteel inflection of the Savannah accent - it sounds so different from accents of Mississippi or South Carolinia for example.

When I was a child before accents began to change you could tell by southern accents where a person was from in the state. The coastal accent was different from just fifty miles inland, etc.

What a lovely video. First visited Bonaventure two years ago and I recently moved to Beaufort, SC, just an hour from Savannah, so I look forward to revisiting Bonaventure and visiting these other cemeteries soon. I grew up in Philadelphia, PA, so a love of old cemeteries and history has always been ingrained in me.

Interesting note: the large obelisk for mayor Arnold( the savior of Savannah) is a cenotaph placed by the citizens in honor of his accomplishment. His actual grave is very unprepossessing in a separate section of Bonaventure. They couldn’t put the monument on his actual grave due to other graves nearby. Not only was he the mayor, he was an MD very active in the pandemic of Yellow Fever and did much research.

11:52. It would be fascinating if they created a self-guided tour, with literature that marked graves and told of the history of its more famous occupants. We have done that in another state, and it really was fascinating, and surprising, to learn who was buried there. You can learn so much about your city's history. A guided tour would be nice, as well.

Excellent video. The intent to be "politically correct" indicates the culture of the Deep South runs deep. We Southerners may use terms others consider inappropriate, but we don't intend disrespect. The cemeteries are beautiful records of our American history. This video and the speakers did an excellent job. Thank you.

The only place I ever experienced "something" was on a family vacation trip to Savannah. We stayed overnight in a Hampton Inn and it was just my wife, and our youngest daughter on that year's road trip in 2013. Just my daughter and I had done a ghost tour earlier that day, which proved to be very interesting historically. That night I woke up in the hotel room in our room around 3:00 that was so cold it was freezing compared to normal for room temperature. I thought the air conditioner was very noisy until when I kept listening realized the sound was more like heavy breathing. From our bathroom I heard of what sounded like someone picking up a small plastic drinking pixie cup and dropping it over and over in the sink making a rattling noise. I started shaking and placed the covers over my head praying that whatever was in the room leave. The sound gradually went away and the room returned to its normal temperature. I did not sleep the rest of the night. My daughter was sleeping in the bed next to us got up around 4:00 and I asked if she heard all the noise. She was upset I did not wake her up when it was all going on. At the time I did not want to wake up anybody thinking I would just be yelled at for disturbing their sleep. There really was "something" going on in our room.

@@larryloveless2967 thanks for sharing your experience here i will share my most deepest experience with the dead and it wasn't in savannah it was in Bangor maine waking up in the middle of the night in a motel had to urine badly I saw a women with red hair standing at the dresser looking down as if she was reading a letter n as I stared I believed it was a real human but after about 45 seconds she slowly vanished i did not bother to wake my gf next to me in bed n I did not bother to get up to use to restroom I was so scared I waited til daylight came up to move the next morning I told my gf n her reply was she believed it was her gay male friend who had recently died from aids checking out the goods me I never stayed over again cause she owned the motel I was only 19 in 93 when it happened while my gf was 31 I still remember it as if it happened last night.

@@lnloutsidework2581 Thanks for sharing your story as well. Very scary and it sure triggered a memory for me. I think I woke up in the motel room around 3 AM or so because of what I first thought was the noise from the air conditioner until realizing the extreme cold and the very odd noise. My daughter in the bed beside us got up to use the restroom around an hour after it stopped and when I whispered to her about what had happened as I also stayed awake the rest of the night, she had no idea and wished I had somehow wakened her. Anyway, In 1991 our two daughters aged 8 and 5 were walking down the hallway to our kitchen after just moving in to a new house (not an old house as you might expect) in St. Louis and they both saw the same "see through" woman with red hair. They both ran and hid behind a chair in the family room and told us later when asked what they were doing. They both remember seeing her clearly to this day.

The cremains were discovered by a descendant who went to try to find an ancestor. He was told that there were a few boxes of ashes in storage, and they were allowed to take one of the boxes considering they possibly contained his ashes. The 344 is a number representing 1/3 of the total reported from the boxes.

What?! First of all, I don’t think anyone was praising anyone. They were just people caught up in the politics of their times. Just like we are now. No one should try and erase history. And no one should dismiss the grief of families who lose someone in a war. And not for nothing, I’m a yankee through and through, and I have always thought we should have just let the south go. Believe me, slavery would have ended soon enough. And we may not have all mess we have today in this country.
