Imagine if you could halve the amount of crimping required for AMP Superseal contacts on your next medium to large scale wiring project/s?

Used by MoTeC, Haltech, Link, FuelTech and more, the AMP Superseal 1.0 connector is a standard in the aftermarket ECU industry. One niggle however on larger scale wiring projects is the fact that the standard terminal requires 2 crimps, one on the body and another over the insulation.
While this isn't a deal breaker for those doing a low volume, it is a gripe for those at the other end of the spectrum and Race Spec offers a solution with a custom solid contact which requires only one crimp via an DMC MH860 crimp tool and corresponding die.
This is something squarely aimed at the professional 'mass production' end of the motorsport market and something Andre was keen to test himself while shooting more material for the Professional Motorsport Wiring Course recently.
While not shown here, a backshell and booting are strongly recommended to finish the job, topics also covered in the wiring course material for you over at: hpcdmy.co/hpa

Up until recently, the only die set that would perform both operations in one cycle was the spec TE tool ($2k per (3) contact sizes = $6k or a Rennsteig piece that was designed for OE grade wire (as in not Tefzel 😎). As Ccooxxyy mentioned Race Spec also designed a die in conjuction with Rennsteig too if you prefer that for wire with thinner insulation: racespeconline.com/collections/newest-arrivals/products/rennsteig-amp-superseal-1-0-die-set-race-spec-exclusive? It is worth mentioning the specs on these contacts are also different to the generic AMP ones. They have designed them to be better, it's not just the single crimp function alone. Not here to push them down your throat, you either need/want/have an application that warrants them or you don't, just sharing the information - Taz.

TE/RaceWire now has similar contacts that use standard Deutsch DTM and M22520 tooling which most assemblers already have. Not sure why Racespec went with a custom positioner.

They look close to Deutsch connectors and pins, how are they different other than the barrel pinch? J1939 has been standardized to these for years now, by far the easiest connector to service over years of hard usage.

FYI, you have been doing this the hard way all these years Andre! MilspecWiring sell the correct crimp tool for these connectors, it holds the terminal securely and crimps both crimps at the same time. I have had one for 15years, so they have been available for a long time.

@@hpa101 Yes Rennsteig. About 500usd complete tool and jaws. Yes when I got mine 15 years ago only oe type insulation size was supported but many more jaws (about 350usd) now available. If you can now buy a tool for similar price to the racespec tool then why not use the correct AMP specified superseal 1.0 terminal, it has the insulation restraint which is not available with the bespoke racespec terminal.

The SS 1.0 connector body incorporates a mat seal, similar to a Deutsch DTM/DT, and a much thinner version than the dielectric found on a MIL/Autosport connector. Race Spec strongly encourage people to use a back shell and boot while using their contact in order to obtain greater strain relief than the factory S/F contact offered. Goes with out saying the average hobbyist will still be twitching about the cost before they ever had a problem in that regard, even with the connector exposed.
@hpa101
@hpa101 Жыл бұрын
@@sneh2j00 sounds about right! Previously you could get a tool from TE but all up it will cost you around 6k. The idea behind this is a superior contact and a simple crimp solution. It won't suit everyone and not everyone needs these tools and materials by a long shot, but since released a year ago many people have benefitted from this product without fault. Nothing wrong with learning about something even if it doesn't fit your application personally or professionally - Taz.
