Learn how to clean an acoustic guitar and restring it for a much better sound that will last a lifetime. In this video, Lauren Bateman is going to go over not only how to restring and acoustic guitar properly, she is going to discuss how you can clean you guitar at home to improve longevity and prevent drying out and damage to your fretboard. She will also make some string suggestions on what type of strings to consider when restringing your acoustic guitar.

You won't really need any tools for this lessons. If you have a string winder great, but you can easily do it without one. I would recommend having at least a wire cutter to cut the strings after we restring them. Once you are done with this lesson, you will know how to clean your guitar like a boss and restring it like one too :)

Ebony wood on many fretboards

Yes, ebony is also another option. There are many more than the 3 I listed, but those tend to be pretty common. Most electric guitars have rosewood of maple for the most part. Bubinga, and koa can be other options as well. :)

@@LaurenBateman Hey do I need to polish my frets and if so how often? Never have in 35 yrs. I'd guess between string changes. I have noticed newer guitars and yes less expensive I have gotten a new one and within a hour or so of play I'm missing wood!!

You can polish the frets yes. Often time grime and sometimes rust from the strings can hang out there

I changed strings last night. I have a nylon string Cordoba fusion. I've only had it about a month and hadn't changed strings, yet, so it still had the originals. I did not realize how bad it sounded until I put on the new ones. Sounds like a completely different guitar! Almost made me gasp in amazement! Lol It has more resonance, volume and sustain. It's alive, now... Just alive! Just awesome! Thank you for videos like this. You make things clear without 'talking down' to us. You explain, give examples and actually show us. You're easy to understand and you are greatly appreciated... Greatly! I'm learning things I want to know without having to wade thru a bunch of other 'stuff' first. Thank you... Just, thank you!

Thanks Lauren for these great instructions on changing the strings. I popped one of my guitar strings while tuning it and panicked so of course, I immediately go to KZfaq for help. I found a few others and managed to get through it but then I watched this video and what a difference. You really take the time to go through it all and show close up photos. This video is so awesome that I'm going to restring that guitar again following these easy instructions. I just ordered new guitar strings and this time ordered 3 sets to be safe ☺. I love your videos and I'm looking forward to finding more of them. Thanks again for sharing your talents. Much appreciated.

Thank you Lauren for the detailed, step-by-step guitar string replacement and cleaning tips. This is my first time doing it alone. Before I reached the part of putting on the new strings (the Mfgr. and the best size to get) my guitar looks so much cleaner and the fretboard is smiling back at me for the cleaning and polishing it. Next step will be putting on the new strings. I will try to be careful while following your instructions. All your videos are all well thought out and easy to follow. You are a patient instructor, never in a rush. Easy for a beginner to learn. I listen to you as well as watching. Thank you again for helping all of us, men and women guitarists alike. 5 things. 1. Thanks. 2. I find that bending the strings about 1.5" from the ball before setting them into the bridge hole is helpful. 3. You said "tuning peg" when I think you meant to say "bridge pin". 4. I like that you mentioned pushing down on the strings when removing them to make it easier to remove the bridge pins. A lot of folks never mention that and it makes a big difference. 5. Advanced: Sanding the end/bottom of the bridge pins at a 45 degree angle about 3/4" upwards helps prevent the ball end of the string from potentially catching on the bottom of the bridge pin and then blasting up towards the bridge plate when you start putting tension on the strings.

@@LaurenBateman You're welcome. (I also use the rag that I use to condition the fretboard on the bridge. It helps that unfinished wood from drying out just like the fretboard.)

Just found your channel, LOVE it! This is my 4th time picking up my guitar since I was 13 (Now 65) I didn't think my strings sounded so bad (Only 22years old) but the black corrosion was concerning. Cleaned her up and polished her nice and she is a siren I will be playing for at least the next 5 months. Thanks for your great Videos!!

Great video as usual a little tip is to also oil & nourish the wooden bridge which can also be get or be quite dry on a new guitar, often overlooked but can definitely effect the tone & sustain.

In order to get stuck pegs out you could also try to push them out from inside the guitar ... if you can reach them through the soundhole ... take care of any wires coming from the piezo pickup under the bridge.

C'mon Lauren..only 2x a year? 🤣 I've replaced my 3 guitars at least 3-4× this year! Buy stock in D'Addario! 🤣 BTW...I just bought a GORGEOUS Breedlove yesterday! The ECO Collection...All mahogany top/sides. Laminated mahogany back. All sustainable. The resonance is unreal! Get them to send you one! You'll LOVE it! ...and NO PINS! 😃 I'm working through my TC Helicon playacoustic...the body rez function is 😁 sick! I was working with my DAW today laying down some track...ALL DAY... Anyway. Thank you for showing us how to restring properly. Having now popped a string in the process, I have made my rite of passage. The only thing I had trouble with is getting the loops to hold while tightening the strings. Will surely get better with practice 😊

very helpful video, as always, lauren. thank you. could you please make a video discussing humidification of different types of guitars - acoustic, electric, semi-hollow? i never had to deal with worrying about humidity levels until i moved to california. the humidity level where i am is in the 20% - 30% range and the strings on my classical beater guitar which sits out on a stand keep popping! YOU ROCK. thank you!

Lauren, you need to show better video of how you wrap the string around the post (over and under). I didn't get it from the still shots and ended up just wrapping the string without the over/under technique.

Great video! If there's a pickup in the guitar, it's a good idea to cover the sound hole. The cleaner, polish, & oil can affect the electronics in the pickup if they get inside the guitar. Great work, love your channel...

Hi I purchased the .012 DAdario strings. Maybe thinner than what I have been using. However I Trust you and your advice 😊. Excellent instructions for the beginner. Some people in the reviews say the light strings break but probably them and not the strings. I also have Lemon oil that I was given back when I purchased my used but nice Walden Guitar. I would take your lessons now but just can't afford it right now. Hopefully I will in the not too distant Future. Love your lessons on you Tube David Ahlers

I decided to make my first attempt to change my own strings tonight... watched several youtube videos to get a good idea of what to do before starting, and ran into a problem that nobody so far has addressed. It's at the time I'm actually winding the strings on - it looks like it winds really easily and neatly for the people I've seen do it, most of whom are men and naturally have a lot more arm and hand strength than me - a little 5'2 woman with fairly weak arms and hands. You look stronger than me too, and you don't mention anything about it, so I'm guessing you don't have the same difficulty either. What I'm experiencing is that I can't get the string to wind tightly around the tuning peg. I can hold the string down against the head/neck of the guitar like I've seen others do, but the string is too thick and strong to really wrap itself around the peg tightly, so it doesn't go on right. I'm guessing if I had a lot more natural strength that it just might provide enough tension for the string to wrap tightly. I don't know if I'm describing this well enough... Do you know what I mean? I've wrestled with it a while now and at this point I'm thinking I may just always have to get someone else to restring it for me, which would be disappointing. I don't suppose you have any tips or insight that might help? (I'm using 11 gauge phosphor bronze strings)

Ahhh, very good point. I don't mention that specifically in this video but I sort of address the issue in HOW I wind the string around the tuning peg. I like to wind the string already around the peg to get it started and then I say apply downward pressure to the string to keep I taught. THAT is what solves the problem you are describing here, if I am understanding your question correctly. I hope that helps! Also, great string choice.

I can wrap the string around but it doesn't wrap tightly enough - I can try and wrap it more tightly but it doesn't really hold, and I can apply downward pressure but it doesn't seem to be enough pressure (or maybe it's some other reason?) so there seems to be not enough tension created to stop the string from just curving (rather then being straight between where the string is going on and my hold, and so doesn't allow the string to wind neatly.

Actually after reading this I made another attempt at my A string (which just wouldn't cooperate last night), and physically wrapped it around a couple of more times before turning the tuning peg, and that gave me enough traction to finish it. Maybe that's what you meant? Anyway, one way or another it was inspired by what you said - thank you 🙏 It was still a bit tough trying to hold it in place while turning it. And I'm not sure it sounds as good as it should - probably mainly because the string did get wound and unwound a few times, but I'm happy with my success thus far and it has inspired me to to keep trying and see how my process can improve 😀

Just found this. Like it a lot. However, what are the effects of removing all strings at once? I would think 2 at a time, then replacing those two would be better due to tension on the neck. There are various opinions on this. Yours?

If you want to adjust the truss rod you should remove them all at the same time.

Hi Lauren! I’d like to compliment you on your string change tutorial. I got my Fender acoustic for my 50th birthday (15 years ago). Original strings because…..I haven’t done anything on it but fuss around. Surprisingly it stayed in tune. I decided to change the strings and get at it. I went for D'Addario 10-47 bronze. Hoping the lighter strings will help. Not sure what the originals were but I can tell a difference. Ok back to the point. I watched many vids on changing strings from Fender and many many others. I came back to yours because of your technique. Bravo!! I enjoyed sitting on the front porch changing strings with you.

Hi Lauren, I have a monterey mea-17n 3/4 size acoustic/electric gutiar been doing research since watching this and I can't find out what wood the top of the neck is made of for care. I had my G string hang up on the nut and tuning was difficult. It would snap from tuning up and go above. Some say graphite on the nut, how about a drop of light oil?

I tried this as I broke a string learning Iris goo ggo dolls (dropped d tuning) and i realised that i am so impatient - i did try but gave up ...took my guitar to the shop instead... You could go into restoration or some thing like this ...you seem rather adept at this stuff.....good advice on the strings too ...I took this advice but went for some phospher and silk core Martin strings they are amazing and easier in my girly hands..

Ha ha. I used to wear my glasses all the time. My wife suggested that I remove them and wear contacts. 🤣 Martin stones are nice too.

If it’s not glossy, most likely rosewood. Look up Your guitar mode online.
