It’s funny that in the show Zack is the extrovert and Slater is more chill and reserved but in real life Mario is the more talkative extrovert while Mark is laid back and reserved.

Not sure if it’s true but like the other guy said and according to the documentary, she had strict parents as well being Jehovah’s Witness so she stuck to herself

She was, according to screech's book she was jehova witness, stuck to her beliefs and was shy and soft spoken. The director had to tell her numerous times in the first season to speak up and project her voice.

From watching this clip, you can definitely see why the producers decided to cast Zack and Slater as best friends in later seasons because it’s so obvious that Mark-Paul and Mario had such great chemistry off set.

I agree. He was like 12/13 when he started and that's your developmental years. And to have older kids putting you down take after take (and I don't doubt they did it off set, since that's how they knew him) I can only imagine what he felt. This is why kid actors lose their minds later on.

I think they casted him well. But with hindsight I would have casted someone more classically attractive and closer to the other casts age. I remember the stupid ‘screech’ type character in California Dreams was a really handsome guy. I think they someone like that can handle playing the geek with less issues as they grow up

I grew up watching this (not TBS re-runs, but on NBC), starting from "good morning Ms. Bliss'. So blessed to enjoy the 90s as a young teenager and adult with the awesome movies, music and culture. Today's new "swag & bae" generation may try to imitate the 90s, but they WILL NEVER, EVER know what it's like to really grow up during that decade.

I must be in the minority because I'm the only one that thinks Screech is cool. I really think he's just misunderstood. He seemed like a cool kid who the cast alienated because he was much younger.

I didn’t like the way his character was cast. It seemed like the producers were just trying to follow a “trope”, about nerdy guys being only good for “comic relief, meaning that he had to follow all the stereotypes. Eg . The nerdy socially awkward guy had to be the butt of all the jokes, had to be considered less attractive and desirable than the athletic types, and have a crush on a girl who was out of his league socially and who turned him down.

@@nsls8223 it’s true it was common to portray a nerd in that stereotype at the time. I liked Screech as a character, because he didn’t really care about following norms, but he was genuine, and was always loyal to his friends. He may have come across as annoying sometimes, but only because he had never really learned how to polish his social skills. He was less self-centered than Zack, and so was usually a better friend to people than was Zack.

The first Saved By The Bell episode was the second one with Zack 4th wall breaking The Lisa Card on August 26, 1989. I was 11 years old. I was a half Chinese/White kid on the Navajo/Hopi reservation. It took almost 32 years to find out Zack Morris is half asian. RIP Samuel 'Screech' Powers. 1989 it is.

PrincessKLS I think he was just bitter and the book was just his way of blaming his own frustration in his life on them. Also, the more scandalous the book, the more media attention. However the book was so far outlandish I guess it had the opposite affect. I think the stuff in the book is true, but magnificently exacerbated.

Dustin had a dysfunctional relationship with his family. His mom died when he was very young and his father wasn't close to him. Tiffani said on Howard Stern that Dustin at times bunked with her family. So imagine how betrayed she felt when he bashed her in his fake tell all book

I grow up in this time and it was about looking perfect in all ways almost cookie cutter and white picket fence kinda way. Top brand clothes, perfect hair etc. Why change (grunge,goth etc.)was happening it was slow and far from mainstream.
