Up voted. Seems easy enough. I would use a piece of coat hanger wire or a bit thicker that is marked then spin it in a hand drill and put file scores in the marked locations. Maybe put a circle bend on the top end for a handle.

Dave thanks alot. I still don't understand the reasoning behind no dipstick that car manufacturers are doing now. When they don't want to easily check the fluid level it makes you wonder why on doing preventative maintenance, not wanting you to check the transmission fluid level.

+Raymond Campbell I have heard different reasons over the years....some are that on some vehicles you need the scanner to tell the trans temp and then the chart to compare the level on the special tool which means see the dealer or a repair shop. On the newer vehicles they say that the trans is "fill for life" and requires no service. So there thought it no need for service, no need to check, unless you have a leak. Leak means fluid level has changed, otherwise no leak, no fluid level change. All the above items are what I have been told. Some have merit while others not as much.

I’m sure it’s cheaper for them not to put a dipstick in the transmission and most people have to bring it back to the dealership to get serviced without a dipstick more money for them

@@vincescalise4821 they dealers have lost alot of money due to the trustworthiness of your nieghborhood mechanic. The manufacturer has never wanted us Americans to have a vehicle heirloomed as our cultured acustomed since the 80s'. Their is no such thing as a lifetime fluid. And the sealed for life gimmic has been debunked. Men eachone teach one. MotorCity Mechanic you are truly promoting freedom with your content.

@@josephfelix9533 Yes, I had a jeep that wouldn't upshift till 5k rpms. It had a CVT and had read that the fluid broke down over the years and would loose viscosity in the summer. Multiple dealerships told me that the transmission was sealed for life and it need a new transmission. I dropped the pan myself and replaced the fluid and it fixed the problem.

Can I use this method to check my Transmission fluid level on my 2017 Chrysler Pacifica in a cold none starting condition and then drain and add to the level on the zip tie? Thanks.

hey I have a 2015 300s with the Hemi 5.7L. I recently noticed constant fluctuations of the temperature gage it goes between 200-228 is that bad and what could be the cause? thank you

Dave, Thanks for the video tip on the dip stick, I will make one, I am the proud owner of a 2015 ProMaster City with the nine speed transmission, I am impressed with its performance with the four cylinder engine, it preforms like a V8.

for 2015 kL hard shifting ,finally they said they are going to replace valve body,,but i don't think so it will solve my problem,,so far i beleave its clutch problem ,,,

There is a process we have to go thru....software update.....valve body....and then trans replacement. Will have to see how it turns out and if not better possibly a trans replacement is in your future.

Hi David I have a 2014 grand caravan with the 6 speed auto transmission.. I want to check the fluid level and seems there is also no dipstick... is there the same type of tool needed to check fluid level ?? Thanks in advance. Great videos by the way!! Love your channel!

Yeah there is a special tool for that, I have a video that I started about a year ago that I need to finish that goes over how to check it....one day I might finish it. Here is a link to the tool and it comes with the chart that gives the level the fluid should be at. I need to film that one day. We use to do a lot of them but not so much anymore. They came out with a software update for the thermostat code which fixes some and some not so much. I will keep it in mind as a future video.

One question, does the engine have to be running to check the fluid level?

It must be running at idle with the transmission in park and the vehicle in a level position.

I bought the special tool, at 120 f im reading 35-40 mm, so i thought my trans was over filled, I drained the trans and only 3.75 liters drained out. Really confused on what's going on, I thought I should have 6 liters but only half that drained out and My tool says it's over filled. Tool is 10-140 mm increments.

The rest is caught up in the torque converter, etc. To do a relatively thorough job of it you can drain, fill, drive...and repeat a few times if it was really old fluid. Or Just drain and fill once every so often (every few years?), depending on the number of miles you put on it between.
