my aunt was in AF and jumped out a plane and her parachute malfunctioned n broke both legs. she’s had over 50 surgeries bc she didn’t want to amputate them. so sad to see her in pain often

well it's a risk vs reward curve... if the risk is him living possibly a very uncomfortable life vs a life without legs but still being able to utilise the ability to run and walk. I think the later is clearly better.... In a TV the outcome is always good, but it might not work out always

No this is what we call medical malpractice. Something this risky that's never been tried a doctor can't say this is absolutely what the decision we would make. We have to look at is the juice worth the squeeze. And young kids are very quick to bounce back from amputations and prosthetics below the knee don't stop you from running. I spent two years at Walter Reed with the best prosthetic doctors around not to mention I'm missing my entire leg so I have a little bit more information than you I've watched people try to salvage limbs for years before finally giving in and having it cut off the pain the anguish the depression you have no clue.

I'm not an expert, but even if you manage to somehow manage to fix the damage that's been done on his legs, I highly doubt he will ever properly utilize those legs, plus months if not years of pain medication, maybe never being painfree, most sports might be out of the question, the bones might grow wrong and any issues that stay into adulthood will grow worse.

The female doctor was just worried about the boys chance of survival. Shure, he would loose his legs, but he had a far higher chance of keeping his life.

My son had a pediatrician like that female doctor as well. I quickly got rid of her and put her down to never talk to us again. My other doctors for him are awesome.

Immobilizing the neck is a default for extractions, it's easier and safer and helps prevent people from thrashing around. It's been decades since I worked ambulance, but some things seem not to have changed.

It is best practice to log roll a patient who’s on spinal precautions onto a board

I have CRPS in my left arm. I don't think I am in the later stages but they are not really treating me the moment. All I get told is medication is bad and that I need to come off it. Yet I have to use all my tools that are non medication based to just cope with the pain. I have built tolerance to medication but never dependent on the meds and always took the dosage suggested by my doctor. I love how they just lump this pain with other pain and say "well long term pain meds are bad and so you get nothing, even though this condition is excruciating". I am now only on Lyrica and thats all. No pain meds (well paracetamol with ibuprofen and an anti-histamine that can know me out for the night), no anti-inflammatory meds or anything else really. Even CBD oil with additives didn't work. I can cope with it most times but other times I just want something to stop the pain

@@droid88-b56 Yeah, I wish I could say that I’m up & walking, but alas; things are more complicated than that. Because I’ve been immobile for 10 years & my legs have wasted over time, my attempts at using the prosthetic were a huge failure. I left the clinic, only being able to take a few steps with the wheeled zimmer walker … & then I had to stop using the prosthetic, because I was getting too much weakness in my good leg & I knew I was going to have a fall if I continued. I’m sadly now bedridden again, only getting up with my powered wheelchair. My fam have promised to make my life a good one, though & as I’m also awaiting a major court case to be settled (medical negligence for life-threatening errors & life altering consequences), they’ve put a large sum into an account for me to use in the meantime & I only have to ask my mum or sisters when I want something, then they’ll get it for me. Got some new clothes, new supplies for art & craft stuff, as well as a lot of games I’ve been wanting (including a few rare collectible PS1 games that I wasn’t able to get before). I’ve been glued to my Nintendo Switch for a while now, playing “Pokémon Shield”, so I’m still reasonably happy. We’re hoping the court case is settled by my upcoming birthday (May 2024) & perhaps we’ll even get a new place to live that’s more spacious & caters to my disabilities. Anyway, I’ve been told not to worry about it, so I won’t. I’m a little sad that I won’t be able to climb into a rollercoaster, but you just never know what the future holds. Maybe with a few years of recovery & gentle rehab, I’ll be able to wear the prosthetic again. I’m not going to stress about it, though. My mum & sisters have promised to take me on trips (which I’ve insisted that my little chihuahua with PTSD will be coming too) & some plans for those future trips have been discussed. I’ll be alright, with my wonderful fam & our family solicitor sorting all the legal stuff. I’m just glad to be alive. 🥲💖👩‍🦼

If you have to amputate, you try to do it as soon as possible so you amputate as little as is necessary. Those bone fragments are going to move and cause other issues the longer you wait. And they didn't have enough spider silk to be ready to do the other thing quickly.

The reality is even if you put the bones back together and don't cause an infection. Chances are the bones wouldn't heal properly. The kid would be stuck to a wheel chair for the rest of his life till he chose to amputate. Also with being in horrific pain the entire time. With a much longer recovery time from the amputation that he put off.

@@nathaniels9141 to be fair there are some case studies that patients had time to come to terms with their limbs needing to be amputated so having the limb attached for a couple of days could help with phantom limb and helps them adjust to a life without that limb. As suddenly not having a certain body part to a very jarring experience.

It's been tried, but hasn't caught on. I'm not sure why, whether it's not yet strong enough or still way, way too expensive, or there is some compatibility problem, or what.

Resource-allocation, that and human incapability with patience. Spider farms are a thing and very profitable in both silks and meats but is focused purely on long-time profits which is an uncanny concept to mortal men. That kid would literally be much better if the hospital board weren't possessed by their troubled childhoods.

My mother told me a story when I was probably 4-5 about them having to use a spider web in a tough scenario on one of her siblings ( I can't remember, it was 11 of them total) when they were kids and playing one was cut real bad. This was 1989-1990,when she told me this and I was just as fascinated then! I'm shocked to see this it took me back to her telling me about it and I'm like an actual spider web? She was like yep! Now, to see it and it's amazing.

Amputation, at that point, would also have been much cheaper and faster for the hospital. Hospital budgets are not bottomless, and surgical theater time is not endless nor are the hours of available surgeons. Triage, using resources to treat the most people effectively, is a thing.

Spider silk is made up of chemicals, one if which is the same thing that clots our blood. I'm a nurse, and got into a discussion with a surgeon (1980s) about this. He was surprised I knew about that effect. Told him I watched my dad walk up to web in the woods a grabbed a handful to STOP a bleeder from a fishing cut. I was 8 yo,and never forgot it, used it a couple times, too.

Those legs are smooshed. They'd have to open up the leg to apply the plates anyway, and plates in growing bone can distort their growth. They can also require removal years later. I still have mine from 35 years ago,, but the screws heads have worked their way out a bit. Not quite enough to need surgical removal, but enough to be cautious about them.
