Natural World: Pangolins - The World's Most Wanted Animal
The endearing pangolin is a little-known scaly mammal. Found in Africa and Asia, these shy creatures have an unfortunate tagline - they are the most poached and illegally trafficked animals in the world. Based in Namibia, conservationist Maria Diekmann rescues and rehabilitates her local pangolins. In a bid to better understand the global issues they are facing, we follow Maria to Vietnam, Thailand and China into the very heart of the crisis, where demand for pangolin products is greatest. In what turns out to be an emotional journey, Maria joins forces with a Chinese megastar to build a campaign to bring awareness to the plight of an animal most people have never even heard of.

5 years ago I didn't knew Pangolins existed, let alone were being slaughtered. Spreading information and educating people (specially the local communities) has proved to work multiple times throughout the world when the matter is preservation, so I believe we are in the correct path, but there is still a lot of work to do. Thank you very much Ms.Maria for your work and to BBC earth for such educational content.

I'm Namibian, I once saw my uncle pick one of these up on the side of the road in Otjiwarongo. He put it on the back seat with me, I didn't know what it was I was so young but I remember how beautiful it was. Curled up into a ball, it was simply majestic. Something felt wrong though, keeping it in the car with us was wrong and I didn't know why at the time. I know he went to sell it to some Chinese guys. It's really sad what's happening to these beautiful animals.

Yes. It is very sad that these poor creatures are suffering. Many of the poachers, however, belong to poor communities that are killing these animals so that they can earn a few bucks to sustain their family and also because they are not informed about the importance they have in ecosystems. I also belive thatin order to bring transformational change, one must stop consuming these creatures because ultimately it is the consumers which drive the production of Pangolin Scale dishes.

@@ECOnnectKZfaq There is one man, the bat man, Merlin Tuttle, who goes around the world helping educate people about the bats living in their areas. Opens their eyes about the importance of these pollinating pest-controllers. You're right, some people just don't know, and honey works better than vinegar etc etc. I don't know how "important" pangolins are, but it doesn't matter. They are a part of this planet and humans have no right to do what they do. But they do. So how do you stop "traditional medicine?" Decades ago when I was a child, the ppl next door brought back a brown pangolin in a gunny sack. The spectacle attracted other kids and adults as the animal was being prepared for its medicinal use. If I recall, it's blood (couldn't have been much) was dripped onto cooked rice at a corner. There wasn't much noise/struggle from the animal throughout. Everything took place at least 10-15 meters away out in an open compound, too far for me to see clearly. Gosh, decades later and I still have that sense of the spectacular seeing something so rare right next door to where I lived!

You have to remember that these are desperately poor people. It's a bit ignorant to call them cruel, wrong and stupid. In Western countries, it's difficult for us to imagine what it's like to scrape by, barely pulling enough pennies together to feed your kids, let alone put them through school. Pangolins are entirely defenseless with the sweetest dispositions, some people are just emotionally disconnected, without developed empathy for others, likely due to their own childhood unresolved traumas but everyone is responsible for their own healing and not to project their traumas on to the most defenseless and vulnerable like pangolins or children ie. child trafficking. One possible way of fighting poaching, is to try to create a synthetic, identical looking pangolin scales, 3d print them. If mass production can be made and market flooded, the prices for pangolins will drop and poaching will not be profitable anymore. Same can be tried with rhino horns and elephant tusks.

4:09 that's tough, the woman admits if the guy sells a pangolin then his kids can go to school and his family will be taken care of, so it's like 'is an animals life worth the life of a human life?' OH man hard decisions

Nature and all of the animals on this planet are so beautiful. Yet we keep destroying everything that we can possibly destroy. We create wars, and we can't even treat other humans fairly, on top of actively destroying our habitat. It's hard to stay positive and keep faith. In such a world, people like Maria are truly amazing.

This is so sweet to dedicate oneself to save a species, but it’s so sad to see people fighting all their lives for this matter while other people are being killed and nobody stands for them.

Are there efforts do extinguish the demand for Pangolins? I mean, if people pay stupid amounts of money because they believe to pay for medicine, it may be fruitful to run campains to let them know they are better off buying small suggary pills with mint flavour instead.
