I miss Tony, I think you are definitely doing right by this Tree. They are what they are and a known difficult variety at times. Bringing the tree down to a workable height says you have a plan to keep it small and beautiful and that you believe in its future. Both things are very nice. Good Show Jason. Tony would smile. Thanks for taking such care of dear Tony’s tree, I’m sure that you can bring it back to a happy and healthy life. My neighbour had a lovely Silver Birch planted her garden that for no reason unless it was the heatwave that we had last year completely died last year.

They are just stroppy difficult trees. They develop beautifully then when you love them they spitefully break your heart 🤗😆😆

I'd probably let the tree grow, and cut the top after it has regained its health. Maybe even plant it in the ground for a year. But the problem with that is that I don't necessarily have the time at the right time of the year to dig my trees up, and some of them have run away. Not literally, of course, but almost literally

You did well with this one Jason. Good job. The only thing I would of done extra would of been to wash the old soil out of the roots completely. Other than that you have set this tree up to recover nicely.

I recently saw a video (I think it was Nigel Saunders) and he said "never fall in love with your birch." As you say Jason they are very prone to shedding branches. It's a shame that your tree did exactly that but that's nature for you.

This could still go in a couple of different directions depending how it responds and grows over the next year or so. I’m hoping for a squat tree with taper and low branching, and maybe air layer off the upper part provided it generates branches.

Fingers crossed all goes to plan, I can’t see that you could have done anything else then what you have done, hopefully with the fresh substrate it will put on the required roots and make a full recovery. I’m looking for a nice Silver Birch under the instructions of my wife.

Sometimes nature takes an equal hand in the styling. These hardships will add grace and individuality to the tree, no-matter the final design. The tree will respond beautifully to your hard work. I find a large amount of genetic variability within individual silver birches for die-back. I also find that late winter conditions play a role in survival. I always loose more trees (or branches) when we have a very cold spell, followed by a warm spell. Sap flow starts even though you don't see the signs. The next winter blast is sometimes too much stress.

Well Jason your off to a good restart. I would hope for some lower growth to pop out but I caution you regarding an air layer. I have had zero success and my colleagues the same. I seem to always have trees in the wings to swap out when Birch die in the forest. Keep us updated I especially have an interest for obvious reasons . Thanks

Thanks Jon. I’ve heard of people having success air layering birch but maybe it’s a difficult species. Be interesting to see how it goes. I have a few of these, and a couple oddly shaped so fortunate to have material to experiment with and hopefully improve.

I'm fascinated by this birch tree, I have no experience with them. I hope you get a lot of backbudding. Are shohin measured for height excluding the pot?
