Since the 1970's, sea lion populations have declined more than 80% along the North Pacific coast. Scientists at the University of British Columbia and the Vancouver Aquarium are working together to help save Canada's iconic and largest pinniped - the steller sea lion.

What level of education is required to work and train sea lions? Have you ever lost a trained sea lion to predation, during exercises?

@@IveGotItTwisted atleast a bach degree in marine biology, and they do not test the animals in huge open bodies of water that would house large predators, they do it in closed coves and lakes

Why do humans think they have a “right” to interact with wild animals when that interaction can be harmful? Habituating animals to human presence always has consequences. Yes, the people diving to see them will not harm them, but what happens if the animals think fishing boats are ok to approach? Many people in the fishing industry think these animals compete with the human’s livelihood. I’d love to see them, but the animals welfare must come first.

I wonder who's gonna come down here and install these 'nice' devices to monitor US, THE human beings. Out of love, of course :-) Or even better, catch, imprison and train us to be the SHOW (of another 'more intelligent species'). Just a few questions: Wouldn't it be nicer and more beautiful to watch these animals in their natural habitats? Try connecting to them as we somehow manage to do with dogs and cats? Wouldn't we perhaps learn more? If they're indeed intelligent, sentient beings and have their own emotions and wishes, who thinks they're happy (or happier) to live in captivity? Why are they disappearing in many regions? Well, they will one day. They'll be extinct one day. Like everything else. For me, a human being, the most intelligent species on the planet (are we really?), it's paramount that I don't participate in or accelerate their extinction in geometric progression.

How do they know which sea lion is which since they all look the same ? Maybe they didn't disappear. Maybe they went down to California since you said the population has grown in California. It's a possibility.
