I pulled these rattan chairs out of the trash a few weeks ago but I've never worked on anything quite like these so I'm kind of just going to be winging it and of course I'm bringing you all along for the ride!

Good save! It might be a good idea to drill a few holes in the plywood bases for drainage. If you let the ferns stay out and die when the weather changes, they will add fall/winter color interest to your landscaping. ❤️

I had a big old black wood chair with caning in my garage. I put it out at the curb. No one wanted it. So I sanded I and gave it a new coat of black paint. I put in a big flower basket. It looks great. It feels good to save something from the trash.

Honestly, when you started deconstructing these, I thought the same, that it might be more work and materials cost than they were worth. Definitely did the much smarter thing here, and they turned out really great (though when you were in the spray paint aisle, I was rooting for a bright yellow or orange color 😊).

That was a very creative way to give more life to a couple of wicker chairs! Wicker furniture was quite popular when I was younger. I think it's beautiful, but it's not the most durable type of furniture. As you discovered, it can cost more to repair than it does to replace. Bravo for finding a solution to tossing them back into the trash!!!

Bravo! You did a great job with these! I love your idea of using them as plant stands. They're too lovely to toss in the trash but also too expensive to restore to use as chairs. This way, you get to admire them every time you leave your house. And later on, if you want to, you can spray paint them a different color.

When I fixed my wicker, I used plain old rope at the binding. On one item, I used some beige cotton macramé cord I had in a box to bind the joints. The legs looked a little rough so I wrapped the cord all the way up each one, scratching post style. They were secure and looked great. Your planter chairs are really cute! Great idea.

Thank god you decided to turn those into plant stands. They are so cute!!! I had a pair of rattan chairs in similar condition that I did take on and I spent a ridiculous amount of time on them only for me to get them looking "decent." I was so frustrated with them that I ended up selling them....I made nothing on them. All I gained was experience on what projects to take on and which one to pass on!

I did the same thing with an old chair I found at the dump. My initial thought was to save it, but as I was taking it apart and refinish. As I was doing that I realized it would be too expensive and not worth it. So now it's in my garden with a potted plant. The chair was so old the cushion was actually made from straw. I had never seen that before, but it was cool. Great job Katie ❤ from Alberta

Rattan is very expensive no matter how old because it withstands harsh weather. It is also the reason most people use them outdoors. Just a small two seater Dinnete set runs around $750.00 - $800.00. Those chairs usually run for around $90.00 to $115.00 each. I got 2 dinette sets for $25.00 each, Reconditioned them, later finding out they were valued at $750.00 each set. Needless to say I kept them, they look great in my patio.

I had a wonderful wicker chair planter that hid a wooden box with a plant I didn’t want to spread in the yard. The vining plant event found ways through the small holes in the backrest of the chair.
