This bench has been outside for over 5 years and calling out for help. Ready for the dumpster, I rescue and restore it. Metal and wood bench restoration.

What? Some people know all the things are going to need before they start? 😂 I was just trying to be funny. That’s a great idea and maybe someday I’ll be smart like you.

Yes! I'm glad you did a propper job on the paint work, primer, first coat, second coat. Nice job

Love your colours for the enamel and protecting the timber to appreciate its beautiful grain. Hoping to do something like this for my mother's old garden benches.

I have a chair to restore in almost the exact same design as the bench. Never restored anything like this before, so very pleased to find your channel to give me instructions and what products I need. What a beautiful colour u chose for the iron.👍

Oh the blue! So pretty! I also notied you use ratchet straps to hold wood while glue dries too. I do that cuz I don't have clamps, lol. McGuvering, but still doing what this pro does, 😆.

Great work. I’m restoring one at the moment and it doesn’t have those seat braces. It has diagonal ones that go up to the seat from the legs. Any experience with these? Will that be strong enough? Thanks for the video 👍🏼

What are the dimensions of the slats. I’m restoring one that only has the cast iron sides.

Thank you from the UK. Great video. The birdseye camera view is very helpful. I love the detailing and that you list all the products and reasons why you like wood stain etc v paint. I prefer the look of natural look of wood too. I don't have a table saw but i will have to make do with a hacksaw. The bench looks smashing! My mum's bench has a mild steel frame and wooden slats with coach bolts. Do i need knotting solution before the wood treatment?
@AlleyPicked3 жыл бұрын
Hi and thanks for the feedback. I am not sure that I understand your question. By knotting solution are you referring to wood stain? By wood treatment do you mean polyurethane finish? Wood stain is optional.
@sunkat763 жыл бұрын
@@AlleyPicked @Alley Picked Sorry. Knotting solution - the spirit based liquid that you apply to knots in the wood prior to stain to prevent the knots dropping out at a later date. I was just going to stain it to match in with our side gate as we have some left over from that project.

Great video. Question please please. My bench has rusted bolts, you can’t hold the head still to undo them without damage in the wood. Any suggestions please. Thanks
@AlleyPicked10 ай бұрын
Some bolts need to be cut off. I have also had bolts so rusted that I was able to grab the nut with a pair of channel locking pliers and jiggle the nut back and forth until it snaps off. I assume you are trying to save the wood and don't want it damaged. There are several tricks I use but it's hard to tell what your scenario is without looking at it. If you need further advise, you can try to send pictures of the bolts to alleypicked@gmail.com

Great job! How does the brush on enamel hold up to the elements compared to a spray paint?
@AlleyPicked4 жыл бұрын
There are several determining factors. As long as the surface is prepared correctly both spray and brushing are effective. Cars are sprayed. Both methods are effective if done properly.

Looks fantastic!! Did you consider carriage bolts instead of the hex head?
@AlleyPicked5 жыл бұрын
That probably would have been better. But being "alley picked" cheap, I try to use what I have on hand. Good idea though.

@@AlleyPicked I thought the blue accent paint was nice, specially if it matches your house trim. I could of done without the white accent paint but overall i thought it looked fantastic. Great job

i feel the same way about painting wood even when necessary. i think people who paint wood should take chloropyl to change their skin color. then they would understand never to paint wood, ever.
@AlleyPicked4 жыл бұрын
Not sure I would be that extreme but I appreciate the sentiment ;-)
@spicynomad4 жыл бұрын
@@AlleyPicked lol, you said people who paint wood should just be imprisioned. i found that extreme. they should feel what the wood feels getting painted and all. my sentiment is mild in comparison to yours, alley.
