A couple of weeks ago we landed a 27" maple. We decided to saw it thick and wide with a live edge.

Brings back memories. I used to offbear at a mill, cutting bridge lumber and railroad ties. That is some hard work. Nice mill.

Very nice. I've got an old frick mill that I've been working on for years. It looks like it's got 4 corley axles on it, but a previous owner put split race bearings on the axles. It came with a frick edger. I came across a 4-53 Detroit with 300 hours retired by the air force, and I've got a new 56" insert from Payne. Sounds like you've got more power than I'll have. Hopefully I'll get it all together some day

Good luck on getting it together. The old Frick's are great to saw on once you get them all fixed up and aligned. I love sawing on mine.

Like your mill.Looks like you have done a good job re-bulding it.What size saw do you run?

Mike, it is a 54" 2-1/2 - 7 blade but I can only saw 20-1/2" with it due to the fact that when I upgraded the axles, it lifted my carriage some. I have an F pattern but it needs to be hammered as I changed all of the shanks. I need to run it up to the Boone area to the saw doctor and just have not done it. I have been sawing a lot of SYP so the 2-1/2 - 7 is great for that.

I noticed that some of the planks snap off from the log before the cut is complete. Guessing that is from the carriage being higher than the off feed table or is that an issue with all circular saw mills?
@davidcunningham257
@davidcunningham257 6 жыл бұрын
On my mill some of that is because there is a difference in height between the carriage and the off feed rollers. When we had axle issues, I upgraded to newer style axles which were taller and I have not gotten around to raising the rollers yet.

Looks like a tap hole in you table top. Is NC able to get sap for making Maple Syrup or is the hole from somthing else or just a knot hole?

Why don’t you have a ruler board across your front head block…dad always have one on his Frick. Have seen lots of videos and it seems no one uses them anymore?

When I got my mill, it did not have one and I haven't ever seen one for sale. The scrap mill I just bought had a piece of one about a foot long left. Had it had the entire thing, I would probably have put it on along with the lumber gauge but with most of it missing, it doesn't offer any value. I think those are harder to see as well since they were down on the way below the L and would not be that visible if you had a larger log on the mill. Not having ever had or used one, I can't be sure though. I just always liked the round lumber gauge so I was excited to get one to restore.

Amazing machine. What is the size of the blade ?
@davidcunningham257
@davidcunningham257 6 жыл бұрын
The blade is a 54" and the saw will swing as large as a 60" blade but 54" is the largest I have. Glad you enjoyed the video!

Do you guys have a board edged for your mill?
@davidcunningham257
@davidcunningham257 6 жыл бұрын
We have an edger but it needs to be restored. Another item on my list. Our next thing at the mill is to get the planer up and running. We have a Newman 8B 4 sided planer that has been rebuilt, we just need to get power from the engine to it which we are working on.

David Cunningham Cool! How wide of a board will that planer do? I've got a Foley balsaw m14 sawmill I modified to cut 16' logs and a Dixon board edger.......and and American 8" 4 side planer you can make lumber better than your would get from the store via milling it.....I love watching your videos makes me wish I had a frick or American sawmill
@davidcunningham257
@davidcunningham257 6 жыл бұрын
Jacob, the Newman is a 24"x8" planer. You can only do 4 sided up to 4" thick though. Between 4" and 8" thick you can only do the top and bottom and not the sides. I also have the T&G heads for it and it will do 1" and 2" thick T&G. It is rated at 24" but I think the knives I have are 22" long. Hoping to get it up and going in 2018. You are right, you can produce much nicer stuff than you can buy in the store. Glad you are enjoying the videos. I have never ran or been around a Belsaw. I have always been around either Frick's or Corley mills. It is just by chance that when I found my mill in the woods that it was a Frick. I was just looking for a circle mill so it could have been anything at the time. Knowing what I know now, I would probably have started with a Frick 01 rather than the 00 but I have the 00 restored and it saws just fine.

David Cunningham Wow lucky to have a nice big planer like that...I paid $1k for my American in ok condition but in working order....and literally about a week later a 12" 4 sided sold at an auction I was at for $600....does yours do just tounge and groove or will it shiplap too? Foley balsaw mills are really light just like a farmer's mill should only saw logs up to about 10-12" & at first only cut 12' logs but I'm building my house with it so i wanted 16' so I modified mine and it has a ford 390 that's governed running it and now cuts up to 18' logs........and your mill looks great and sounds good and looks like it cuts nice...... I hope you get your planer and edger running soon kinda makes the operation full circle

I got lucky on the planer. I actually have two of them but have sold the one I have that is in parts. The one I plan to connect to the mill was completely rebuilt. The guy had receipts that showed $8000 for the rebuild by Newman. A guy bought the business and then sold the planer for $1250 so I bought it quick! The thing weighs in a almost 7000 lb so on a $/lb, I did good! lol! I don't have the side heads for shiplap but the heads can basically be configured anyway you want. Just have to get knives cut for the profile you want. They are not fixed knives which makes it nice.

I like being able to push a start button and be up and running. Laziness as I age I guess. Besides my wife would probably kill me for suggesting getting a steam engine! 😄
