"Souvenirs" (written by John Prine, first on Prine's 1972 Diamonds in the Rough album)
from "The Marty Stuart Show" on RFD-TV aired 2010.
LYRICS
All the snow has turned to water
Christmas days have come and gone
Broken toys and faded colors
Are all that's left to linger on
I hate graveyards and old pawn shops
For they always bring me tears
I can't forgive the way they rob me
Of my childhood souvenirs
Memories they can't be boughten
They can't be won at carnivals for free
Well it took me years
To get those souvenirs
And I don't know how they slipped away from me
Broken hearts and dirty windows
Make life difficult to see
That's why last night and this morning
Always look the same to me
And I hate reading old love letters
For they always bring me tears
I can't forgive the way they rob me
Of my sweetheart's souvenirs
Memories they can't be boughten
They can't be won at carnivals for free
Well it took me years
To get those souvenirs
And I don't know how they slipped away from me

When Marty tells John at the beginning: "You play whatever you want to." he REALLY meant it. You notice Marty stands off to the side and behind John because he knew who the real genius was in the room.

The way Marty Stuart looked at John Prine as they sang together tells you how much he loved and respected John Prine. And I'm sure that ran both ways.

One of the best parts of living in Austin TX was that sometimes you'd be sitting there in some totally nondescript place listening to a wanna-be playing for tips and beer, and every now and then somebody with a guitar would come sit in for a few songs. Or there'd be an open mic. Saw Willy Nelson sit in once with a woman who was on her way to modest success. Saw John Prine do open mic once in a bar near UT. I'd never heard of him before, but after those few songs, I bought ALL his stuff. Never saw him live again, but that night was awesome.

I don’t know where folks get their information. John had just began playing weekly at a little club in Chicago while still working as a mail carrier. He wrote this song on the way to his gig because he felt like he needed to have a new song in case some of the same people were there from the previous weeks. There’s a live video of John telling the exact story. Do some homework before spreading misinformation
