I have this and just cleaned it for the first time. There are LOTS of nooks and crannies to try to clean with the cheap little brush they give you. (I don't see any way to order a new brush if you lose it, and it doesn't appear replacement filters include this brush.) At least once a month ANYTHING you can run through the dishwasher (including the two doors that come off the pump, I would). The filters and pre-filter ("sponge" that wraps around the pump) really add up if you're replacing as Rellaty says you should.

What is the mat under the fountain made of please? Does the fountain slide on it? My little cat pushes fountain so forcefully water spills everywhere.
