I've never woke up and said, "Man, I'm glad I drank last night."

There was a time when I thought I couldn't make day 3. Well, here I am. It's been several years. Never again will will it touch my lips, and my life is a lot better. I don't think I'm any better than the next guy. But I am better than my old self.

An old farmer once told me "if you don't want your children to do something, don't do that in front of them. If you don't want your children to be drinkers, don't drink, If you want them to be honorable, lead by example" I took it to heart and stopped drinking in front of my children, eventually i could count the beers i'd consumed in a year on one hand, this went on for several years, and then about four years ago i quit entirely for health reasons. I don't miss it at all. After mowing the lawn, a tall glass of unsweetened ice tea really hits the spot.

Great video Cody, presently in the same struggle. Police officer with some PTSD issues, turned to alcohol to numb the turmoil, always feel guilty that I'm sometimes in a bit of a fog while trying to be a good dad. Its encouraging to hear you experience the same temptation. Keep us posted on your progress, honestly I was going to run to liquor store tonight, but watching this changed my mind.

My mantra is, "I don't drink, and I don't smoke. I don't stumble, and I don't choke!" I'm glad I never started.

I have a lot of respect for people with the ability to be intellectually honest.

I'm 24, off alcohol 17 months. A great decision. I'm off it for life now.

For about 3-5 months i got bad with getting a 12 pack or a case of beer and getting drunk almost every weekend. I finally realized that I am not doing any good getting drunk every weekend. Most of my family is a bunch of alcoholics and i dont want to end up like them. I haven't had a single drop since January

Good video. One thing that always kept me away from alcohol is the passing of my grandfather before my mothers wedding and the Bible passage below. Alcohol always caused problems and abuse in the family, and once he got saved he completely dropped it, lived 5 more blessed years and passed in peace. "Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is. And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord" Ephesians 5:17-19

Just went one month with no alcohol and feel better.

I stopped having beers, scotch, and bourbon. I lost 40 lbs. pretty much immediately (over six months).

I never had a drinking problem either.....as long as there was another bottle. Six years sober now. Good luck God Bless

Thank you for sharing your testimony! I’m here because I saw you on the Bear chat with Owen. I quite vodka 3 years ago and now have an occasional beer, lost 30 pounds and never felt better. I prayed to God and the next day I woke up, poured it all down the drain with the most incredible and divine strength that I asked for to quite. If this Irish Bear can do it so can you! I’ve recently found your channel, and am blown away with this honesty and the introspective look you have taken. I have struggled on and off with substance use of many kinds and will be sober 1 year best month. I have 2 year old kids and the footage of your young one brought tears to my eyes. Proud of you! I'm 58 years old and I had my first alcoholic drink at age 15 and just never stopped. I never drank hard liquor or wine, just beer. Also, I was mostly a weekend drinker due to serving 20 years in the USAF. After retirement, I had too much free time on my hands and found myself drinking almost daily. I would not attend any social function unless beer was served. All my friends drank. At age 52, I woke up a little hung over and like you, decided it was time to stop. I was very lucky I never once had any withdrawal or anything. However, I must admit, I sort of lost many friends over this. This is because what drew us together was beer parties and such. It's odd, we are still friends, we just don't hang out anymore. I've not had one drink, even a sip, in over 6 years! I will not go back! I feel better and I'm saving loads of money by not drinking. It was just time to stop for me. My wife has never drank. We have grown closer. We have been married 33 years. Good luck to you. At least for me, after a couple of months I had zero desire to drink again. You will be happy with your decision.

I did this last year. went from a 6 pack a day to a 6 pack in a year. people are are always why im not having a beer. after a month or two, I have no interest to drink

So I am tracking right along side of you. Stopped drinking about 3 weeks ago, no smoking unmentionables, cut out all my vises. The problem I'm having is, how do I fill in the many many hours I used to spend inebriated. It's boggling mind when I think about it, how much time I have wasted being wasted.

You wouldn't want to hurt or kill a family member on having that 3rd beer. And you know your kids watch you. They could drink and drive and be killed someday due to watching you. That's reason enough.

I started drinking heavily pretty much daily since I was 17. I'm 23 now and decided I need to stop the habit. Haven't drank in over a week and been working out every day to keep my mind off drinking

Great Video, I am 57 years old and 22 years ago my wife left me and i lost my business all because the love of Alcohol led me in a bad direction. I stopped cold turkey and never looked back , i have not had a sip in those 22 years. I remarried, managed to start another excavation company and am very successful in my business and my marriage now. I too watch Owens channel and want to give much respect to you for what you are doing. Take care !!!!!

I recently heard a caller on a radio program say that 50% of the things he does are done just so his daughter will see him do it. Meaning, you teach by being who you are, not by saying who you should be. I think your taking this action is going to have a significant impact on Jack's life so maybe you can draw some strength and motivation from that (and, of course Sweat Loaf). I lost my dad to alcoholism more than 20 years ago (he was in his 40's). He was sober for the last several years of his life, but his heart had been damaged to much, so he died very young. As a result, I limit myself to 2 drinks/day (on days when I drink, it's not every day). I also will occasionally go a couple weeks without it, just to "make sure".

No one's live has gotten worse by stop drinking alcohol.

I was 41when I finally put it down successfully (so far) In December, it will be 10 years(AA for me); it's tough but can be done (with God's help); keep it up.

Such a great video, thank you for your honesty. I had a bit of an issue myself and it was hard to take a real honest look at myself and take responsibility and own it. Cody - thanks for the motivational video. I stopped alcohol over 11 years ago and don't miss it one bit. I never even drank as much as what you were describing, but I did enjoy a glass of wine or a couple beers now and then. Stopping for me was like you were describing what may happen - once stopped it never was there as a craving/nagging and it has just become 'my thing.' I do find that certain brands of NA beer fill that gap of what to drink with my pizza so that's my only small consolation. There are some very unsavory NA beers out there so if you go that route try a few before saying no to them all. And to al those that say what's the purpose of even having NA beer, I say for this very reason...that and it makes you the default designated driver (which for me is also a good thing). Hang in there - I'm guessing you'll just not miss it after awhile and the life-style change will be an easy one.

It’s been twenty years for me best thing I ever did. My wife talked to me one night and explained her feelings. I listened and it was hard to overcome but I am glad I did.

Thank you for sharing this. Because of my age and full time caregiver-to-my-wife status I gave up using alcohol-except for cooking-in order to stay 'fit for duty'. Water or sometimes a soft drink is now my tipple😀.

Curiously enough, I decided to quit drinking today (probably time to change my user name, hah). Thanks to sharing this when you did; this has inspired me to double down on that choice to quit.

i really appreciate your words of wisdom, back last january i had a huge struggle with alcohol and drinking culture. I was an alcoholic waking up and reaching for my first drink of the day all the way through till the end of the day where i would drink till i passed out to sleep, what i thought was the only way for me to get to sleep its very amicable of you to do this and it takes great strength im lucky i had the people around me to help me and show me what i was doing to myself even though im only 20. I rarely touch alcohol now only in social settings but i always make sure to stop myself now and never get too "bad" as was the case before. i was sober for around 6 months before i touch another drop and have been better ever since i cut my habit thankyou! stay strong and the support will always be there for you in your choices.

I've never had the desire to drink though I have had wine, hard cider and hard root beer just never developed the habit. I've seen alcohol destroy the lives of people close to me and that really made a lasting impression on me and has helped to keep me grounded. Even though I don't have this particular affliction and don't know what you're going through you definitely have my support and admiration. Keep pushing you can do this..

I don't know if it was my suggestion during one of your recent live streams, but I was happy to see you in the chat yesterday on Big Bear's channel. You guys seem to have a lot of the same values. Logos rising! Keep up the great work. I've been alcohol free for about 5 years. It was pretty frustrating at first, but gets a lot easier. The thought of having a drink makes me a little sick most of the time. I rarely want to drink. I will occasionally get a craving for a nice cold beer after a hard day of working out in the hot sun, but I reach for a cold iced tea, or lemonade now. In the beginning, I thought AA would be good help to me. Maybe it was at first, but constantly telling myself I was a broken alcoholic every time I went to a meeting was very bad for me. It kept me from fully healing. I'm not saying you're an alcoholic, I don't think you are (just to be clear). Anyway, between verbally telling myself I'm broken (which felt a lot like brainwashing wizardry), and spending a lot of time with people who were often court ordered to be there & others who didn't really care about not drinking & were actually quite the trouble makers, I found AA to be more of a destructive force in my life. I needed to be around God fearing, positive people who love life. People who have similar family values & morals. Well, this is getting too long for a comment, so.... You're doin' great kid!

As with everything in life, Alcohol requires discipline.

Ran across your Saying Goodbye video, and was compelled to watch. First, CONGRATULATIONS! My name is Patrick, and I am an alcoholic! It was just over 30 years ago, and I was in your shoes. I was what is called a functioning alcoholic, I had an inkling that I was drinking too much, but certainly feared admitting that to myself, let alone another person. I do understand your going to a favorite restaurant or grocery store and not ordering a cold one. It was as though I feared feeling like less of a man, if I couldn't order a beer. Much like you, one led to two or three or even more. There is an old AA saying that One is too many, and Ten isn't enough. I was blessed in as much that our Lord delivered me from both alcohol and cigarettes. I now can enjoy my life with a glass of iced tea, a soda or even a glass of water. My prayer for you is that you are still "on the wagon" and enjoying your sobriety. It's been just over 30 years for me, and I can tell you, being around others who are drinking, just isn't fun any more. I, like you don't despise them for drinking, it is just that their personality seems to change so drastically between that first and that third or fourth drink. I know mine must have changed also, as I used to enjoy being around those same people after three or four. There is life after alcohol, your family will be so full of wonderful sober memories. Oh, yes... I can still be a jerk at times, but now I remember being a jerk, and can go back and apologize for my behavior. May our Lord bless you and your family. I'm 500 miles from home, working in another state....which I do weekly. Today, after work, I walked into the hotel and saw that they had cold, bottled beer there for sale. I went through the same mental process as you've described. Thankfully, I decided not to buy it and drink. There are a variety of reasons, but one is that the "realness" of your thoughts and struggle has helped me. This is the most genuine, honest video on the subject that I've seen. Thank you.
