Regardless of the overall feel of Dead Cells, the idea of a game that lets you choose which weapon classes you upgrade, but randomly selects which weapon classes you actually pick up, sounds like one of the most frustrating kick-in-the-balls experiences I've ever heard of. I would get so angry playing a game like that. Especially given that it has zero checkpoints. Doing a run where I pick up nothing but the crummy weapons I hate and don't upgrade and getting my ass kicked back to start for it would be a quit-forever moment. And yeah, you could just upgrade all weapon types equally to avoid that, but then *why let you choose your upgrades at all??* If the key is balance, just skip the weapon upgrades and let players pick up ammo and health like in Metroid or something. You'd never see Samus hoping and praying that the next room contains the Ice Beam because she already sank all her points into Ice.

MigBird I'm not sure if this is the case or not, but I have the feeling the game gives you more drops of whatever stat is highest. I only have my experience to go on, but I usually level for Range and I usually end up finding a range weapons of increasing quality as I go through the levels. In addition, the bosses drop "Colorless" gear, which use the stat thats highest for damage calculations, on top of already having good stats and mods

Hmmm... The colourless gear concept is interesting. The first question I had when I heard the game had zero checkpoints was, "What do you get for beating the bosses every time?" Anything as arduous as a boss battle needs some kind of prize at the end, permanent or not. Might be a little more well thought-out than it sounds. Idunno, maybe if it goes on sale somewhere down the line, but I've already got Hollow Knight lined up for my next Metroidvania-thing anyway.

You can jump in and hand-wave any problem by saying "that's just how it is." All you're doing is loudly choosing not to join the discussion being had.
