I'm sorry this happened to you but I'm also glad it wasn't worse. I grew up in Colombia and learned from a very young age to NEVER get a taxi from the street or anywhere that wasn't an official taxi stand. People would get kidnapped by unauthorized drivers and either held for ransom or taken to multiple ATMs and forced to withdraw tons of money, we called it "paseo millonario". A friend of mine was also scammed in a similar way to what you're describing in a train station in Prague. The driver actually made them (unknowingly) pay in some other Eastern European currency and was able to get a few thousand dollars out of them, so your concern and insistence to see how they were charging you was actually very smart

Thanks for that! Yeah, I mean it wasn't nearly that bad... But to the people saying that it wasn't even a scam (some people have expressed that sentiment), then I wonder a) why have the charade of the two passengers? and b) why was it about three times as expensive as even a normal taxi?

I was once mugged at knifepoint in a taxi in Namibia by the driver and two fellow passengers, so the whole time you were telling the story my heart was in my throat. It could have been so, sooo much worse. And yes, I also feel stupid in hindsight for getting into a taxi that already had two passengers in it, but at that time and in that context it seemed like a perfectly logical thing to do. I'm so glad you made it out safely. I assume your son wasn't with you on this taxi ride???

I don't know about Namibia but in Ghana(also in Africa), we have this share taxi ride that we do, so that each person pays a bit, as compared to just one person paying the full price for the ride. These taxis usually ride short distances in areas that busses don't pass through. So I may understand why you sat in the car with 2 strangers and it made sense in that moment

All good man. Honestly my "blaming" you at the beginning was my Aussie way of admitting that this was a really dumb move on my part. As soon as Miguel told me he wouldn't be able to get me, I should have worked out an exact plan. But when I was in Cali I had unexpected issues that put planning on hold, so yeah. We went to Cancun recently, and the taxi situation is ridiculous. We were nearly scammed for perhaps about $70 US , but the hotel helped us (we had paid for a service that tried to back out at the last minute for our return ride to the airport). Thankfully the hotel started calling and yelling at them to deliver the service. If we had been in an airbnb or similar, we would have been in a hard spot, perhaps even missing our flights and incurring all that cost. I will say that all the car services, taxi or other, were very expensive in Mexico (Cancun region), all of them, not just scammers. And I have traveled to Mexico and knew the scams are rampant, people are looking for an easy way to earn money and the ease of crime adds to the issue. We often travel to Africa, and in various areas / countries the transport scamming is rampant too. I can see that countries with less than ideal employment, or terrible salary situations (some don't get checks often from their employers, I know of some places where people work even a government job for 6 months without income! But they have no other options so hold out hope for the money to show.).... So the scams exist because people are desperate. And then some scammers see such success that they start a mini-crime ring, and buy expensive SUV's.. Yeah, be on high alert in undeveloped / struggling countries, certainly. Try to confirm with airport employees, the challenge is knowing they are an employee. Not knowing the language makes us easy targets, so learn languages well especially all transportation words phrases, money words, phrases, ear drills to know what you are hearing, all airport vocabulary, etc. This is far more important than hotel or restaurant vocabulary.

Ha, the same thing happened to me, but not in Mexico. (I used taxis in a lot in Mexico City with no problems.) My experience was in Guangzhou, China. First time in China - this was back in the 80s - not understanding a word of Chinese, and the guy who was to meet me at the railway station didn't turn up. After about 20 nervous minutes, a man approached and asked "You want taxi?" Of course I said "Yes." I showed him the address and we did agree on a fare - $100 HK, or about $20 Australian. And I paid in cash. Of course it wasn't a taxi but a broken-down delivery van, and I shared my seat with a stack of second-hand computer parts - but we did reach my hotel. My friend told me that I had been ripped off - the real taxi fare was much less - but frankly I didn't mind. The same trip in Sydney would have cost more. We both got off lightly, I reckon! 🤣

So it means that the card provider who guarantees the security has got the data of the scammer. So it means you could accuse them by their provider. Maybe it will save someone.

I’m very sorry that you had to go through an experience like this. If Uber isn’t allowed in the Mexico City airport, my guess is that just like other cities in Mexico, the Taxi syndicates managed to lobby them out because the competition harmed them. In Mexico City the airport taxis have a yellow airplane on them. In general, I only use Uber. Hopefully something pleasant eventually happened on your trip :( Usually the USD sign has two strikes and the Mexican pesos sign has one, but sometimes different fonts don’t play nice with that and variations can exist.

Renting a car wasn't really an option as although my licence is technically allowed in the USA and Mexico, it's crazy dangerous to drive on "the wrong side of the road" (for me), stacked on top of Mexico City traffic and the unwritten rules of driving straight through red lights etc. Like the WAY of driving is totally different in Mexico, and to then be on the wrong side of the car and the road, it would be scary to say the least. I think I've commented on your Mexico trip already. Originally from Boston, I've been living in Tucson which is 70 miles from the Mexican border for over 10 years and I've never once gone to Mexico since moving here. I did go once prior to moving here when I visited my friend who acted as a guide for a day trip to go shopping at the border town. But that was it. Too many horror stories. Now you just added to that list. I was thinking since you were going to the capital it would probably be ok but... yeah.. it's Mexico. BTW the Mexican border guys at Nogales (the border town) just waved us through without even asking for documentation. I've thought about why this is - no other country I ever visited was anything like that. But this is the only third world country I ever set foot in. Getting back into the US was a lot more like you would expect. I mean, I look American, English is obviously my native language, but they still looked at my documents and asked me questions etc. Certainly Americans visit Mexico every day but I know I'm not the only one that is hesitant about going south of the border because of what I occasionally read in the news: drug cartels pretty much run the country etc. Depending who you ask, some people say Mexico is totally safe if you know what you're doing, and then there's my coworker/friend who's half Mexican and his distant relative I think is one of the drug cartel lords for a certain area, speaks perfect Spanish, and is even more afraid of going to Mexico than I am.
@daysandwords
@daysandwords 11 ай бұрын
Hmm, yeah... there's a lot to this. I would go back... meaning that I really don't think it's that dangerous. Cancun and Tiajuana are probably worse, I think CDMX is mainly just Mexicans going about their business. Like you said, $70 US is not much for a taxi, so it may have been a scam but it's not really that bad - and they're targeting "us" Americans because we're rich. Honestly though, one reason for my going was that I was afraid that I was getting to be a wuss as I reach middle age. I have friends who live in Paraguay with their four kids (all born in Australia). And they are super well rounded, able people, who can milk a goat as easily as they can drive a car in Sydney city. And I was scared that I was going to be one of those old people who is like "Don't go overseas! It's all diseases and highjackings!" but really, Mexico is pretty tame compared to other places with a similar reputation. I'm probably going to get crap in the comments for calling it a 3rd world country and honestly, it's not REALLY... Mexicans still have it better than 80% of the world.

Coming back into the U.S., however, I was always asked for my i.d. That's a story in itself. :) Last time I was in Mexico was 1996 (Mexico City...I haven't been across the border region since 1992). Glad it wasn't worse. Since Wise refunded you, joke's on them, the taxi was free! Funnily enough, the one time someone tried to scam me while I was overseas happened when I was in London. I just got out of my hotel, walking down the street somewhere near Hyde Park, when an Audi hatchback pulled up next to me. The driver, a middle-aged man in a suit, asked "Do you speak Italian?" in the most ridiculous accent (he almost sounded like Mario from the video games). I said, no, sorry. And he asked where I was from, I said I'm from the Philippines. He said, oh, do you speak Spanish? I said unfortunately, no. And then he made some small talk about "oh yeah, my friends from the Philippines [name drops random names] we're old and they speak Spanish, but you're a young guy so that's why you're English speaking". He said he was an Armani executive who was there for the weekend attending an event. He said, we're amici right, and suddenly handed me a couple of suits he had in the car, and I can have it. I was like, oh crap, this is a scam. But what kind of scam... do these suits have drug packets sewn into them or something and he's going to ask me to give it to his Philippine friends?! Mind you, during this time there were massive drug trafficking crackdowns all over Southeast Asia, so I didn't want to be arrested when I got home. He then gave me a story, said just had spent a little bit too much money in the casino because he got drunk, and maybe I can give him some money for gas to drive back home to Italy. Like, 100 pounds? We're amici right? I breathed a bit of a sigh of relief, said sorry, I don't have money. 50? I said nah, I don't even have 20 (which I literally didn't at that moment). I handed him back the suits, and his smile turned into a scowl and he drove away saying "ok, have a nice day lol". Turns out it was just the usual luxury goods scam, which is apparently prevalent in many cities with high-end fashion tourism (e.g. New York, Paris). And the jackets were knockoffs being passed off as original ones. Unfortunately for the guy, not only was I rather paranoid, but he targeted the worst dressed man in London that day lol.

I got that he was asking for directions, so I just said that I wasn't Mexican and didn't speak much Spanish (but even if I were totally fluent in Spanish... I didn't know the way to anywhere haha).

The most basic scam would be to drive off with your luggage when you got out of the car
@daysandwords
@daysandwords 11 ай бұрын
I thought of that and waited for the driver to get out after I'd paid. It would also be risky in that you could have a phone or airtag or something in your luggage, plus at Ben's apartment (and similar places) there are cameras that look out onto the street, and then there's the fact that I was obviously active with my phone, so obviously I'd be snapping a picture of the plate as they drove off, or maybe just remembering it. I mean, I dunno how much that would do in Mexico, given the police don't really do that sort of stuff there, but yeah with a tourist who was showing himself as somewhat tech savvy, that's probably a risky move.

They're smarter than you. That's the first thing to understand in many contexts. A thief is always much, much, much smarter than you. (I'm talking of someone who's a thief by profession, not someone who comes on hard times and has a slip). Most of the time the thief is uneducated. "Dumb". Didn't even make it through high school. Or so it might feel - subliminally or something, not as a matter of thought-out prejudice/ a conscious mistake. This is the best way anyone has ever explained this situation to me, so I'm just passing it on. Never forget that he's much smarter than you. This is the first thing to note, on the path toward not being taken for a fool. And if that doesn't work out, then the path to not feeling a complete fool after you're taken for one. Think about it. 24 hours a day (if you include dreams) these guys are thinking of ways to steal from other people. They've tried and failed a few times already, so they know what works, and how. You got had by experts. They could tell by experience that you were distracted, tired, ready to accept "help", to begin with. Und so weiter. I'm glad it didn't work out worse (as it would've, I think, if you hadn't cottoned on to them). Tomorrow they'll be picking up someone else at the airport in the early hours of the morning. That person might not be alert enough to survive this. (Or to avoid being scammed if I'm not being alarmist - about things that do actually happen.)

More experienced to scamming people, sure. I get that being criminals doesn't make them dumb (most politicians are career criminals), but I think you're being very generous to say that they are "much smarter than you/me/whoever". If I could win my $100 AU back by taking a standardised IQ test against these guys, I'd take those odds. I don't think they were particularly dumb, I just don't think they'd be pulling these nickel and dime scams if they were geniuses. So yeah, better at what they do than what I don't do? (Scamming) Yes. Better at speaking Spanish? Yes. Smarter... Well, like I said, that would remain to be seen.

@@daysandwords It's just a good way to warn yourself against complacency. Of course they're not literally smarter than you. (I'd bet on the opposite if there was money to be made on a fairly assessed evaluation of the proposition, even.) But the reasonableness of assuming this is exactly where the danger of complacency lies. It's probably a better tip for someone trying to prevent "shrinkage" at some warehouse, where the main reason the guys working there are driving forklifts instead of doing neurosurgery (or even just trying to prevent shrinkage at some warehouse) is that their mental skills lie outside the set that's of maximal economic value in our current society. That's a situation where it's easy to come to think that clever "you" (who well deserves to be in charge of preventing shrinkage at that warehouse, and not klonking around pallets with a forklift all day) have "got it all covered". System's in place. That's a short step away from the kind of pride in it that begins to believe it's foolproof. In a situation like that, a nice, compact way of reminding yourself that your job is never done is to tell yourself, "They're much smarter than me - because they spend all day every day working out how to steal, and I do other stuff besides preventing theft". (Only what you say to yourself is, "Careful! Don't forget they're smarter than you!" - nice and quick and full of shortcuts - for instance it's not necessary to remember that it's just the one or two thieves that steal, and that most people have too much self-respect to do so.) Bloody hell, I struggled to say that, didn't I? Took much too long. I should edit it down to something more reasonable. But there's this cute cat video I want to go and look at first. I might not get around to it. Sorry if it's still a mess when I get back from that or the next thing or the next thing.

WTF $69 for a taxi? That's cheap!
@daysandwords
@daysandwords 11 ай бұрын
Not in Mexico haha. For reference's sake - on one night, FOUR of us went to a place for dinner that is considered to be kind of expensive. Not $1000 bottles of wine expensive, but definitely not cheap by Mexican standards. Well, all four of us were able to OVEREAT absolutely delicious food, and get softdrinks and actually have some food leftover... and that was $1000 MXN ($57 US). So, yeah, it's hard to say that $69 US for a 25 minute taxi ride is cheap when a VERY good dinner for 4 people is 15% less than that.

The 4-hour bus ride from Mexico City to San Miguel is US$15 one way. My Ubers to and from the airport were on the scale of US$7. In the parts of the developing world that I’ve been to, anything more than $20 to get from an airport to a city center is uncommon. In any case, it’s never nice to have a taxi scam, or any other scam, be your first experience in a new country. I had it happen in Bali with a dodgy SIM I overpaid for at the airport.

Haha I knew someone would bring this up. Let me clarify: The DRIVER was Latino/"Mexican" like you're describing. Darker skinned than white, but certainly not black, the same as like 95% of people I encountered in Mexico and the same as I associate with Mexico and South American. OK, so that's the driver. The "passengers" who appeared to have come out of the airport like me, were black. Black as in not many generations back from Africa. It's not just skin colour, it's lots of things. I can also pick out Nordic people quite regularly... it's not just that they're white, it's their eyes and lots of other subtle hints that I'm not even sure of. So, figuring that there was a decent chance that these guys were from the USA, I asked if they were from there. When the guy looked like he didn't speak any English, I had about 2 seconds to wonder if maybe they were African, rather than African American. I now believe that they were actually African Mexican... if that's what that is called, I'm not sure. But rest assured, they were black, as in, from Africa (or parents, or parents parents or whatever... African descent, and not in the "technically we are all of African descent" kind of way).
@daysandwords
@daysandwords 11 ай бұрын
To add: I can't exactly remember but I think one of the passengers had an NFL jersey on. Unusual in Mexico? Not at all, but with the airport and everything, it was part of my guess about them being from the USA.
