Discover the poignant tale of Scarborough's disappearing pubs in this compelling video documentary. Through over a century of trials and tribulations, British pubs have stood resilient against the temperance movement, world conflicts, societal shifts, and global crises like the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the present challenges loom larger than ever. As the conflict in Ukraine sends energy costs skyrocketing and BREXIT removes a staggering 600,000 hospitality workers overnight, the survival of these cherished establishments hangs in the balance. With soaring rates, exorbitant energy prices, and an unprecedented shortage of staff, the question arises: How will these pubs endure? Join us as we explore the uncertain future of Scarborough's iconic drinking establishments.
Glen Woolley from www.closedpubs.co.uk/ was an extremely helpful resource on this project. His research and collaboration into all the lost pubs throughout the UK is invaluable. Please check out his website and see which pubs have vanished from your area, you WILL be surprised!
APOLOGIES FOR THE AUDIO FROM 2:17 to 3:18, we waited days for the right weather to film this and typically for Britain, it never came. On this day we were coping with 40MPH wind gusts and this section is particularly windy!

Wow, this is so sad to see the pubs disappearing and the effects on these poor businesses that were once thriving. I love when you do these videos because it shows a REAL side of what is happening right now. So sad to see these buildings empty and to think how busy they probably once were of people enjoy in themselves. The blue lounge comedy club would have been so fun to visit too, that really is a shame. So sad it used to be a big nightlife area and that politicians cut the funding and impacting the area. This is really informative Nick & Jill, and so well done! Great job!!

It’s a shame so many pubs are closing and when you look over the last 5 years it seems to have massively accelerated and is changing the face of England forever - we went to a pub tonight near the show in Harrogate and previous years it was packed out - we managed to get a table and it wasn’t busy - such a shame as they cost so much to run - hopefully things will revolutionise and create something different in the future to replace it like the micro pubs - great video as always. Have a lovely weekend, all the best, David & Rachel 👍

Hi Jill & Nick! How shocking and sad to see so many pubs have closed in Scarborough! These British icons have weathered many storms over the centuries so it is indeed worrying that they are now losing the fight to stay open. In some areas of the country though pubs seem to be thriving. It is a very competitive industry. Microbreweries are very popular here in the States as are Sports Bars. Thank you for all your in-depth research. This was a very interesting and thought-provoking video. Cheers! 🍻

I got charge £5 for a can which held just over half a pint in a hotel about 2 weeks ago, yet a can get a pack of 4 cans of premium cider for about the same price. We used to go out every Saturday night but now sit in with a film and a good drink in our cosy house, maybe it's us getting old 🤔. We did go out for an afternoon meal at a Hungry Horse pub where we live for my birthday last Tuesday and it was surprising busy, decent cheap food and cheap drinks as well, so we will go back for sure. Unbelievable that all those pubs have closed mind, what a list! Cheers Alan

It’s staggeringly expensive to drink out now, it’s no wonder the youth are finding new ways to socialise. I guess we are the last generation to grow up, meeting and socialising in pubs. I believe the real cost of serving a pint in a pub is £10 a pint, it’s no wonder pubs are closing faster than ever. They are selling at a massive loss. The British public doesn’t have the appetite to spend that much nursing a £10 pint! The micro pub was decent though. Pints at £3.20 and one half almost knocked me out. Strong stuff indeed and a great atmosphere!

An interesting documentary vlog, Nick. I'm not surprised many old pubs are being converted into apartments and holiday lets. There is only a small footprint in Scarborough for accommodation, so it seems understandable. In our village, there were five pubs and four working men's /servicemens type clubs when we moved here 12 years ago. One pub is currently being redeveloped into commercial units, the second became a residential property. Another became a Chinese restaurant and takeaway, the fourth only opens certain days of the week. One Working Men's club was demolished and a small supermarket stands where it once was. Drinking culture has changed with working culture. Hard manual graft, working locally, and less people owning a car meant a post shift pint or two is a thing of the past. Most youngsters today don't drink, they stay home and consume social media and energy drinks. The smoking ban, whilst very welcome to a non-smoker like myself, no doubt affected the pub trade. The big killer is cheap supermarket ale. Breweries don't care, the just bottle or can their ale and sell it a different way.
@GENerationXplorers
@GENerationXplorers 2 ай бұрын
“social media and energy drinks - the death of our British drinking culture”, love it. very true though Andy, kids just aren’t meeting in the same way our generations did. I cant imagine a day in my life from 15 to 35 where my entire preoccupation was looking forward to my next pub or club visit. I think “smoking rooms” would have made more sense. Segregate the smokers inside, there’s nothing worse than walking past or trying to get into a pub where the doorway is blocked by half a dozen condensed smokers! we certainly can’t compete with supermarket prices and the actual cost to a chain pub of selling one pint is £10, with every passing pint served these pubs are dying..

Thanks for another really interesting insight into the disappearing British pubs. So sad to see so many places closed, particularly when they had popular nights like quizzes and drag that can really help build such a good local community around local pubs. A few Sam Smith pubs in villages by us closed during the pandemic and have never reopened. It's such a shame they are not going to new owners as in some cases they were the only place to go for a pint in that particular village. I hope you have both had a lovely weekend and managed to find a nice spot for a half or two!

An interesting, but sad tale, Nick and Jill. The labor shortage is a problem over here too and we notice many closed businesses including pubs in towns/cities all over. Our energy costs are better though. Most of the bar establishments we frequented years ago are gone. Don't know the answer. In the US many bars also added gaming into them and it helped for a while, but then that seemed to fail too. Interesting, but sad tale!

Another perfectly presented and thought provoking vid Nick As a lad I used to visit a village near us - it had four pubs. Now just the one and that’s struggling. I bet the Wetherspoons in Scarborough is doing well. Ironic (or was it) that the owner of Wetherspoons was an arch Brexiteer. Love micropubs. The way forward 14 long years of this lot running the country. They want their country back. Weird that it’s them that lost it isn’t it.

it really is ironic that Wetherspoons was an arch Brexiteer, now he can’t get the staff to work in his pubs. His chain, like stonegate and Sam smiths are all closing bars at an alarming rate. 14 years of austerity, public funding cuts and sending money overseas and this is what we are left with. its a real mess and I bet many parts of mainland Europe are looking at us and scratching their heads at all the mistakes we are making.

It's sad to see that many pubs are closing down as pub culture in the UK has always been a community building and social event. It's not just the drinking but also the interacting with others, social isolation now being a major issue for many. Besides costs, lack of staff, according to a recent article I read on the topic of fewer pubs, it seems the percentage of young people (under 30s) who spent time in pubs is considerably lower that with past generations. They seem to prefer other ways to socialise and interact with their peers which I thought was interesting. Pubs were for old people. What I do bemoan about pubs (particularly in Australia) is the lack of live music, pubs were very much the nursery where young musicians developed their skills. With city pubs having residential apartments going up around them, pubs are getting noise complaints (the pub was there first!) which often ended up with no live music and less venues for the young musicians.

Hi Nock and Jill I am not familiar with the UK's economy situation after brexiting form European Union until I started to watch your documentaries. Each town has its own character, integrity and now it's falling apart? Not only shrunken fund but all kind of related aspects can be overstressed the small businesses, I reckon. I would like to hear any thoughts from young generations about it, because we may have to rely on them. It will take yrs to recover this ghost town. Well done, Nick. hahah I noticed strong winds blew at you and the noise from the traffic tried to drown your words. You may invest on microphones in the future as you pursue your documentary film.

it’s such a shame isnt it Catherine. I looked into my local which is operated by Heineken but sat empty. they want 4K from you to go in and run the place and then you have no flexibility as to what drinks you sell or what prices you sell them at (and they are not cheap). in their forecast they think the place would turnover 470K a year and that as the landlord you would take 10% but id say their projections are way out of whack with likely income.

Are people drinking less? Interesting that all these pubs are closing! How tragic! Funny how a pub closes, but a casino does better 😮 Love the beautiful council building. WOW! Why cut funding? I’m certain the rates higher than they used to be. So what’s the council’s future strategies? So what are the remaining pubs doing to survive? Energy costs and staffing! 😮 In our country we have a dilemma with staff in Our industry. No one is passionate enough to want to do hairdressing. Great blog Nicholas. thank you Phil, they are very depressing arent they? the itv news last night finally picked up “boarded up retail”, its important when we are spending billions on things that don’t benefit us that we can try and embarrass the politicians to look inward. I genuinely find it utterly depressing. what amazes me is that with each of these videos I will pick up new subscribers and then they will back to back the boarded up playlist. id honestly be suicidal if I watched two of these videos back to back! hopefully they will help make change down the line. I have one more boarded up in the works and then I’m going big guns to try and effect change. will probably all fall on deaf MP ears. after all they are all sat in their lovely market towns and villages blissfully unaware what is happening across this nation. your right about the food though, pints cost the pub £10 to sell, unless they can upsell that with food they will make a loss..

@photographybyphil it’s such a shame. They need the kind of immediate investment that gets given to overseas. The high street regeneration programme that Rishi dangles over swing voters promises 10 million over the next ten years (a million a year for towns and cities that might otherwise not vote conservative), its too little too slow to be of any use and its contingent on Rishi being in power for two and a half more terms. Great video Nick, I think social media has a lot to do with pubs closing now as well. Why spend a fortune down the pub when you can easily get your mates together with a crate of beer? And why go out 'on the pull' when you have dating apps? Personally I don't lament the closing of pubs too much. I enjoy a pint or two in a nice pub as much as the next man but we've all seen the people who would waste their lives in a pub, or drink all day then drive home, or go looking for a fight. Or maybe I'm just getting old 😅
@GENerationXplorers
@GENerationXplorers 2 ай бұрын
definitely a sign of changing times. I guess it’s impossible to compete with dating apps and supermarket prices. the margins have been really squeezed out of the pub model to the point where each pint sold is killing the pub unless they can upsell a ton of food, soft drinks and spirits. hopefully this will “usher inn” a generation of very creative micro pubs. I did some further recon on Saturday night, the big pubs were empty, Weatherspoons was at less than 1/4 capacity but the micro pubs were rammed!

Hi Nick & Jill and yes pubs are closing down throughout the UK, it’s nothing to do with Brexit or anything like that. The truth is the large costs and overheads make running a pub totally impractical. Sometimes I’ll pop into the Grange pub just down the road to me. A pint and a packet of peanuts costs £7.25. I can buy 4 cans of Abbot and a large bag of peanuts from Tesco (other retailers are available), for £5. If I were running a pub I’d go with the Weatherspoons philosophy of being open from 8am to midnight selling breakfast, lunch and dinner throughout the day. Improvise, Adapt & Overcome! Cheers (as I open another can of Abbot in my hovel). 🍺
@GENerationXplorers
@GENerationXplorers 2 ай бұрын
its hard to compete with drinking at home prices. we have lost that social hub that we grew up with and new generations are lacking entirely. at £7.25 they made a £2.75 loss and gave you a free bag of peanuts. the real price of selling a single price in a commercial pub is £10 per pint. I really hated visiting the Lakes (pre Brexit) and being served by Eastern Europeans in every pub I visited. they didn’t have a clue about where they were or what they were doing they were just cheap Labour. well 600,000 of those have now gone and there isn’t a Brit worth his salt that can afford to work their, on there pay, in their place. most famously I went into the Dungeon Gyll and wanted a route up to Scafell Pyke from the Langdale Valley. the Eastern Europeans behind the bar didn’t even realise there were mountains near them. hopeless times. I tell you what though, the pints in the micro pub were £3.20, super strong and the atmosphere was great. corporate pubs, chains and brewery owned pubs will die but we have an answer and its the micro pub. cheap enough and small enough to entertain us old generations that still want to visit. there is hope!

Sounds like Scarborough has been hit with pub closures more than a lot of other towns. It's sad to see. I guess it doesn't help that people go to the sea side less than in the past. Also the council cutting funding and not giving the go ahead for places to reopen. Not sure if the hill on the hole in the wall will be a problem for residents should it go that way but the traffic around there seemed pretty noisy to me. I think a lot of people but cheap ale from the supermarkets and stay home these days too.

I can’t believe the owners of the hole in the wall cited the hill as the reason behind its closure. the hill and the pub had been standing there for as long as I can remember! although admittedly it was a much better pub to visit on the way down the hill than on the way up! we still have a handful of bars on the main stretch of sea front but seeing some close and others only open seasonal hours is a worrying trend to where we might be in another ten years..

its really scary isn’t it Steven? some of the establishments date back 300 years and the British Pub or drinking establishment has been a fixture of our society since Roman times. the actual cost of selling a pint in a chain pub is thought to be £10. its just not a price British people will pay so with every pint sold pubs are loosing money. the margins need to change somewhere, rents, rates, energy prices, staffing costs make it close to impossible to run a pub.

Hi Dean, it was so exciting being part of Scarborough when I arrived. the place was alive 24 hours a day. From workers and shoppers flooding the streets at 9AM to cave in to the pub and club goers who would keep the place alive till 5AM. the police would be busy 24 hours a day and the street cleaners would be up with the milkman clearing up the streets and making them all sparkly for 9AM. this went on for years as it should. would things have been better under Labour? well not much but I suspect we would have still had pubs and clubs, retail would probably still have died. we do have an option now in the Reform Party. Lets hope they get enough votes to at least make the Labour and Conservatives sit up and take some responsibility.

The 'cultural impact zone' seems to be the culprit with a new rule which had reverse repercussions. Instead of a vibrant community it became a destructive alternative. What really is the Cultural Impact Zone's purpose or is it a wolf in disguise? I know trends evolve but the UK pubs are a way of life, a national icon if you like or Identity. Here ( well in NL🇳🇱) we have and "grey wave' of aging population. I'm not sure how that stacks up to the UK ( more pensioners as opposed to younger generation) so you'd think the country would cater for the pensioned off true blue English folk and uphold the traditional pubs?
