I came across a black bear once when I was hiking in Kentucky. The little goober was tumbling down a hill like a panda and landed a couple meters from me. He stood up and stared at me for about 20 seconds before going on his way. The ranger on the trail said that he was probably a juvenile that left his mother recently, just having a good time and not looking for a fight. Incredibly terrifying at the time, but it's something I will never forget.

The bear rhyme for Americans is "If it's Black, fight back. If it's Brown, lay down. If it's White, say good-night." A Black Bear coming at you means you should make yourself look as large and scary as possible and make as much noise as you can to frighten it away. Brown Bears/Grizzly Bears, there's no point to that exercise because you cannot intimidate them. So that's where your one hope if you can't withdraw safely is to drop to the ground and absolutely play dead. You might still get mauled a bit, but it'll lessen the damage assuming you can stop yourself from crying out when it messes with you to see if you're really dead yet. And White Bears are Kodiak Bears/ Polar Bears. They are Persistence Predators and they are large enough and mean enough to think that you are a snack. They won't scare away and they won't be bored by you playing dead. So if you run into a White Bear, get ready to start your permanent dirt nap.

@@daveratledge They are not extremely unpredictable. Animals tend to act in fairly similar ways based on species. The reason you fight back isn't because they're smaller, its because they tend to be non-confrontational because they're not big on predation of large animals. It is much more dangerous to run from a black bear because that means that if its hungry enough it will realize you're afraid of it which means you think you can't take it. If you act like you could at least injure it, most black bears won't take the risk unless they're basically starving to death.

The jazz radio station WCLK in Atlanta also has a few announcers who pronounce 'saxophonist' with the emphasis on the second syllable and the second o as a schwa. I can't tell if they are trying to sound sophisticated or if it is just a niche pronunciation.

Bison and buffalo are two distinct animals often confused with each other, but they have several differences: Bison • Habitat: Native to North America and Europe. • Appearance: Bison have a large hump over their shoulders and a thick coat of fur, which they shed in the spring. Their heads are large, with short, curved horns. • Species: There are two main species of bison: the American bison (Bison bison) and the European bison (Bison bonasus). • Size: Generally larger and more robust compared to buffalo, with males weighing up to 2,000 pounds (900 kg) and standing about 6 feet (1.8 meters) tall at the shoulder. • Common Name: American bison are often colloquially referred to as “American buffalo,” though they are not true buffalo. Buffalo • Habitat: Native to Africa and Asia. • Appearance: Buffalo do not have a hump. They have smoother coats and longer, more curved horns. • Species: There are two main species of buffalo: the African buffalo (Syncerus caffer) and the Asian water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis). • Size: African buffalo are generally smaller than bison, weighing up to 1,900 pounds (860 kg) and standing about 5 feet (1.5 meters) tall at the shoulder. Water buffalo can be quite large, with males weighing up to 2,600 pounds (1,200 kg). Key Differences • Hump: Bison have a prominent hump; buffalo do not. • Horn Shape: Bison have short, curved horns; buffalo have longer, more curved horns. • Coat: Bison have thick, shaggy coats, especially in winter; buffalo have smoother, less dense coats. • Geographic Distribution: Bison are found in North America and Europe; buffalo are found in Africa and Asia. • Common Name Confusion: American bison are often called “American buffalo,” which can lead to confusion, but they are distinct from true buffalo found in Africa and Asia.

I was pushing her and these 2 little boys were playing with the steering wheel thing. They called out to her. Told her to hurry, hurry!! She needed to get on the ship! The spiders were taking over the world! Hurry! While swinging. She called back. No. The spiders are not taking over. Because spiders don't go where i play. And. If they do, my Momma will kill them. So they stay away. She was so calm and matter of fact for a little 2 year old. They just wanted to play. She just couldn't imagine that world. Lol So rule is still even 22 years later. No spiders where Brynna would play. If she would be there, even if she's not, spiders can't be. Get em before they run n hide. You don't want them to try to take over the world. Lol

Gators at the golf course are a thing in Florida. Even weirder are gators at the beach, crossing highways, or gators in a parking lot. One lady who lived around a pond kept feeding marshmallows to a gator in her back yard. One day, she couldn't find her little poodle...

The name Bison or Tatanka (Lakota name) are the correct names for it. A lot of Americans still call it a Buffalo, after what the French fur trapper's call it boeuf. In the 1940, 50, & 60s, most people referred to them as Buffalo.

There's a saying about bears, if you see one coming at you: If it's brown, lay down, if black, fight back. Meaning, play dead for the browns, and for black bears, make yourself appear as large as you can, and make a lot of noise. Now - I don't know if this is true, or bunk, but it's easy to remember.

I actually had someone who lived a couple streets away from my house in the rural mountains who started feeding the bears and the next thing I knew I had a 500 lb black bear on my porch while I was sitting right inside the wide open window so we were eye to eye about 4 feet apart! That was actually terrifying! We actually do have a bear hunting season because we have a LOT of bears but it’s illegal to kill one otherwise so when the bear who was on my porch damaged the truck of the people who were feeding it and dragged their deep freezer out of their garage and into the woods they had the bear declared a “nuisance” and Fish and Wildlife came out and “put it down” which pissed off a lot of us but that’s how I know that he was 500 lbs

Gators are interesting animals, their bite is strong enough to crush a turtle shell, but it’s fairly easy to hold their jaws closed. They can climb fences, but are generally actually pretty docile. Just don’t act like a fish, and you’ll be fine. That said, if you ever come to Florida, and you see a pond, River, lake, canal, or large ditch, keep in mind there’s at least one gator in it, and it’s probably bigger than you think it is. There was a story a while back about a guy who was trying to break into houses, but jumped in a pond to hide when the cops were called, and they apparently heard yelling but couldn’t locate the source. Turns out they found most of that guy a few days later, his body was being guarded by a 9 foot long alligator

1:53 [Etymology] Polecat (n.) "small, dark-brown, _Northern European_, predatory quadruped of the weasel family." ~Noted as a chicken-thief and for its strong, offensive smell, early 14th century. pol-cat, from cat (n.); The first element is perhaps Anglo-French "pol", from Old French _poule_ "fowl, hen" (see pullet (n.)); so called because it preys on poultry [Skeat]. The other alternative is that the first element is from Old French _pulent_ "stinking." Originally the European Putorius foetidus; *the name was extended to related North American skunks after 1680s**

I lived in Hawaii for fifteen years and do free diving everywhere. Running across MONK SEAL is pretty rare. But, I have. The waters were murky and I couldn’t tell if they were seal and sharks, so I hele’d out the water asap. When I got to the beach, they had beat me there and were sunbathing already. They WILL DEFEND THEMSELVES. Now, go to Astoria Oregon, otherwise known as Goonie Town, and swim at the piers where the Sea Lions live and watch them tear to limb from limb worse than any shark or gator.

It's sort of odd that some people can become acclimated to things which would shock others, and not even think about it. I live in a town that has varied from -20° to 112° (-26°C to 40°C). We get surface winds gusting to 80mph (148kph). We have bears, cougars, badgers, rattlesnakes, poisonous spiders, scorpions, tarantulas, skunks, and even porcupines (I never knew they could be found in the desert). Bighorn sheep and antelope can occasionally come to the edge of town. And this general area is so thick with wild mustangs that they are a nuisance to homeowners and a hazard on the roads. And it doesn't even seem remarkable when you are accustomed to it. I wonder at people's reactions when I casually mention I had to remove a 6' bullsnake from the office because he was getting under foot, or stop on the road to put a 3,000 lb bull back into the field and close the gate. Edit: it was 100° today, followed by lightning and some brief wind gusts around 40-50mph. Now I'm sitting on the porch with a glass of wine, listening to the coyotes singing.

Luckily for everyone gators are pretty chill. Imagine if they were like Komodo Dragons (which top out at 10 feet) and just attack on sight. Check out videos of that scientist swimming with a big group of them. I lived in Baton Rouge for a year. A neighbor had a baby gator, Boudreaux. He was sweet, never bit, hung out in the pool with us. He would sink to the bottom and sit for a very long time.

That alligator is real. Having been born and raised in South Florida, the largest I have ever seen was about 20 ft long and nearly 1K pounds. It looked like a dinosaur. BTW, apparently, there are now Monitor Lizards in Florida as well. An invasive species, like Iguanas and Pythons which now make themselves at home in the Everglades swamps. All of that to go with roaches than can fly and grow two inches long and mosquitoes that carry Dengue fever. Oh, and the occasional shark and Man O'War jellyfish in the gulf. Fun place.

True Buffalo are more like cattle and only found in the old world. The American bison is in the same genus as the Eurasian bison/Wisent. The English colonists who found them didn't know about the Eurasian bison, so they assumed it was similar to the largest cattle they knew about, buffalo. We have a lot of mistakes like that. For instance, the Eurasian elk and American moose are the same species. The American elk is its own species of deer unrelated to the European one. The Eurasian reindeer and American Caribou are the same species.

Hawaiian Monk seals are a protected species, and it's against Federal Law to hassle them. If you spot them ashore, you're supposed to call local police, who will get Federal wildlife guys to discreetly watch over them and not allow curious onlookers to approach them until they go back to the sea. I was stationed out there when I was in the US Army, and we were sternly warned against messing with them.

Regarding the otters being evil. I think you're thinking of Seals. Yes. Those can be very dangerous. A lot of historians believe that seals are what sailors mistook for mermaids. Seals will pull you down, and likely cause you to drown. Obviously not because they're evil, but because they don't understand that you can't breathe underwater, or hold your breath like them. Otters are like big energetic squeaky stuffed animals.

Actually the black bear is not likely to bother humans unless they are in a position to associate people with food. On the other hand the polar bear is the only bear that will actively hunt people. The prairie dog is a burrowing creature that looks a lot like a squirrel with a short tail. The Black Footed Ferret is often found living in prairie dog burrows. The first Europeans to report seeing a prairie dog saw them one day and had one for supper that night. Technically in america we have bison and in africa they have the cape buffalo. They are very different animals with the bison usually not bothering you if you stay back and the cape buffalo being called the widow maker because if you piss it off it will hunt you down and kill you if it can.

People call the American Bison Buffalo but they are really Bison. In 1970 there was a movie filmed on a ranch outside Sedona and in Prescott Arizona. It was blessed the Beast and the children and I was in that movie about the boys camp and the bison hunt. And no I wouldn't want to face one. I've been kicked gored and trampled buy horse and Bovine over the decades. Even was gored through the neck Just 4 years ago. I'm in my 70s. But Thankfully no bison.. You want to see a buffalo Stampede for real watch the movie How the West Was Won. The Stampede was filmed on a neighboring ranch by Camp Verde. Same place they had the train incident. I used to work at a hotel in a rural area, and I always told guests at check-in never to put their trash outside of their room and to call the desk so one of us could pick it up. At least once a week, I would get a panicked phone call about a black bear digging through the trash they left outside their room. So, these folks never intentionally fed the bears, but the bears learned where to go for food on a Saturday night (after hitting up the dumpster behind the Mexican restaurant next to us).

Bison are found in North America and Europe. Both bison and buffalo are in the bovidae family, but the two are not closely related.
