Scared to Start Sertraline? (Zoloft)

Many people are too scared to start antidepressants once they have been prescribed. If you are worried about the side effects I hope you find support in this video and across my Channel; I have been in your shoes and remember being scared to start antidepressants when my GP asked me to start taking Sertraline. Has the road been easy? No. Has it been worth it? For me, absolutely. The main thing when starting antidepressants is to feel informed and safe. If you are worried about taking antidepressants then speak to your GP and allow them to talk you through the risks/rewards more carefully.
I was worried about the side effects of Sertraline but also the stigma surrounding taking antidepressants. I quickly found that whilst the side effects are real, the world can be an understanding place.
You are not alone in this journey, leave a comment describing your experience because you never know who it might help!
Good luck my friends, I am proud you are making a Happy Change!

Shyla,Try to stick to the lowest mg. Heal yourself. Be careful what you feed your mind. Avoid watching negative or horror movies before sleep. Reduce overthinking. Avoid comparing with others, reduce negative social media and avoid constipation as it affects the mind instantly. Your breathing is closely related to the brain [mind] and gives relief from stress-anxiety. Sorry, I'm not the best at checking for reply to my comments! I took the zoloft for around 3-4 months and it helped my post-partum anxiety tremendously. But I did discontinue it after around 3-4 months. It was a godsend when I needed it, but I didn't like how it made me feel....disassociated. Mind, I was in close conversation with my Obgyn when I withdrew. There were no side effects when I got off.

I really appreciate that you have created this community to openly talk about depression and anxiety. I have been dealing with both intense anxiety and depression for a couple of months now and I tried Zoloft for about 5-6 weeks, but I am now tapering off of it. Some people swear by Zoloft, but it made me worse. I already feel better after two days of reducing my dose and I plan to be off of the meds entirely within a week. The side effects for me were too much to deal with. Everyone is different, but if you're taking them please listen to your body and keep track of your progress as you go.

And Ive now been experimenting with the help of my doctor to figure out medication and dosage. This medication journey has been going on for me now for 7 and a half months.

I used to take sertraline in my early 20’s. I felt like I had gotten better so I stopped taking them. No problems and my mood was great for years! Suddenly this year my anxiety came raging back and It’s been so hard to cope with it. Feels like I forgot how to deal with it again. Anyway I’ve been prescribed sertaline again and I’m so nervous to start! I tried lexapro a few weeks ago and had the worst panic attacks so I stopped very quickly. My doctor said that sertaline is what I took before and it worked great! But I’m just so nervous that my anxiety will get horrible again..it’s tough to take the first step right now but I’m finding courage to begin. I want to feel like my normal self again and I figure, if it worked before it should work again!

But now that I have them, I suddenly don't trust that I need them. I am so scared to fuck myself up if I'm being honest, that I almost would rather just tough it out. I have been going around in a loop for years trying to get help to address my issues, and I feel like getting this medication was a breakthrough. But I don't know. What if I have just made myself believe that I have anxiety? What if I made myself believe that I needed help and medication? I am doing everything I can to not take them. Also, it probably doesn't help that I am a hypochondriac so any mention of side effects throws me off... help please

Hey Anne - you might want to jump in to the Facebook group as there are loads of wonderful, helpful people in similar positions who you can gain insight from - facebook.com/groups/ahappychange I know the feeling, I definately felt like I had made progress once I finally had the prescription and then suddenly panicked about the side effects they might cause. My advice would be to trust yourself and I would never advise taking them if you weren't ready but if your Dr has written a prescription they have seen a reason. They don't hand them out lightly. The first couple of weeks can be odd and some people quite then but from my perspective, I am so glad I finally took them. A good talking therapy is really useful too but realise how hard it is at the moment!

@@hannahmills3246 Hey luv x Wow, I made this post three years ago! I am no longer on that medication. I was on it for about two years. A lot has happened since- i tried many more medications, finally got a psychiatric diagnosis which put my life in a clearer perspective!! Trying sertralin made me conquer my fear of psychiatric medications and i now take them without hesitation (i only care about certain side effects i don't want like weight gain etc.) My honest experience is that it didn't really do much for me. I didn't find myself any less anxious or any more happier. I remember feeling incredibly frustrated that i wasn't getting better. I'm not sure if i felt anyway else as it's been a whole year and i don't remember how i was feeling at that time. In terms of side effects I experienced that my mouth was really dry and i bought some sucking tablets from the pharmacy to help that. And TMI, diarrhea the very first time i took it. I could never have known if it was going to do anything if i didn't just try at one point. I hope you can take comfort in the fact that you can ALWAYS come off it again (with the help of your doctor obvi). I know that the self doubt and self gaslighting can be really uncomfortable because there is no one to keep it in check for you but you have to trust that your doctor can see through that when people just want to score drugs or if they're lying for other reasons. You were prescribed them because you need them. I believe you need them. You're not a fraud and you're not deceiving anyone. You're mentally ill/ and or anxious and that makes the brain work differently. It is not a performance you can put on as you please so everything happened exactly as it should have ❤️ If you have any more questions, I'll be happy to answer!

After some thinking, I have more questions I hope you can answer based on your experience. You said your mouth felt really dry when you started, did that ever go away or did you just get used to it? I'd like to know that with all of your side effects, did you actually get to a point where there were no side effects at all or did you have to get used to them all? Also, do you know, if you are prescribed for a month and then you have a month off of them, and then you take them again, will you go through all the side effects again?? Also, if you stop taking them completely like after a month, will whatever Zoloft did to your brain go back to "normal" or is it a permanent change they do even after short usage? You might wonder why I am not asking my doctor. Well...it is first now after clearly overthinking this, that these questions start to pop up and I'd like to hear from someone who's been through it

Hey - hope I can answer! Dry Mouth - went away after a couple of weeks. I made sure to stay hydrated. Side Effects in general - No major constant continuation but very occasional recurrence of upset stomach. My update video might clarify things a little > kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rduAlqeV2K3Mj4E.html Don't do a month on/month off - you will not only experience the side effects again but also likely experience withdrawal. This video explains further > kzfaq.info/get/bejne/h9aXecx1psjQl5s.html SSRIs tend to provide space to fix the issues causing the mental illness rather than permanently 'fix you'. Sertraline is a good push-start for many people to seek proper therapy, change poor lifestyle and learn coping mechanisms. If you take for the reccomended 9-12 months you will probably feel some lasting benefit once you stop taking them but definitely not after a short amount of time. I hope that helps a bit? Let me know if you have more questions!

Been on sertraline for about 3 months now to treat GAD. Started on 25mg per day, started feeling better after 1 week then my doctor put me up to 50mg per day, I just got more and more anxious on 50mg I knew that was a possible startup side effect so tried sticking it out, but after 2 weeks on 50mg my anxiety was so high it was pretty much panic attack level all day everyday so I put myself back down to 25mg per day, the anxiety went down again, my doc told me to just stay on 25mg, that was a couple of months ago now and I'm feeling better than I have in years, still have anxiety sometimes but it seems like pretty much like normal anxiety for valid reasons rather than the constant anxiety about everything and nothing that I was feeling. No real side effects at all now, even noticing my libido is increasing again now as previously the anxiety pretty much killed that.

I’m on day 4 of 25mg. Main side effects: slight headaches, slight nausea at random times, insomnia (just takes a while to get to sleep) and tiredness. I’d say I’m more anxious than I normally am. But this could honestly be Bcos I’m constantly thinking about the effects of this medication. I also worry about suicidal thoughts creeping in constantly as I read this is a rare side effect too. It’s almost like I’m checking whether I’m suicidal 😂 sounds daft but that’s anxiety for you. All I can say is. The side effects I’ve had (even increased anxiety) isn’t anything I haven’t suffered before so I’m strong enough to cope with them, so will you.

@@sparkywalton Try to stick to the lowest mg. Heal yourself. Be careful what you feed your mind. Avoid watching negative or horror movies before sleep. Reduce overthinking. Before sleep close your eyes and create happy images of yourself in a big garden with flowers, birds, butterflies, angels etc and you are enjoying the momment of life. Avoid comparing with others, reduce negative social media and avoid constipation as it affects the mind instantly. Your breathing is closely related to the brain [mind] and gives relief from stress-anxiety. To relax sit on a chair or lie down, neck straight, eyes closed, avoid moving too much and observe the sensations of your incoming--outgoing breath at the entrance of the nostrils for 5-10-15 minutes or more. Never meditate with expectations but with awareness. Don’t fight your thoughts. With daily practice the mind will relax. No deep breathing needed. Observe your breath sensations before sleep, in college, at work, taking a walk, when reading, etc.etc. Like me, make this a lifetime daily habit to have a better life. Best wishes--Counsellor.

Just putting this out there - I’ve been on sertraline for about six years and it’s awful - I’ve been trying to get off it for four years. The side effects are terrible- I put on about 20 kilos of weight, every muscle tightens and you are constantly tense, I’ve had continuous diarrhoea for the entire time, I sweat constantly, I have ground my teeth down to the pulp due to continuous bruxism. I had a nervous breakdown the first time I tried to come off due to the severe withdrawal symptoms. I suffered from discontinuation syndrome about five months after beginning tapering for the second time. This has been the worst experience I’ve ever had and I really wished that I’d never taken sertraline- it’s absolutely awful. If you are unfortunate enough to take this and decide at some point that you want to get off it, you will need to use the 10% method - ie you drop by 10% of the dosage every two to four weeks. It will take about three years from a dosage of 100mgs but it’s the only way to limit the risk of getting withdrawal symptoms and discontinuation syndrome. But seriously if you haven’t started it I would recommend other medication before this - it’s a massive regret that I started it

The best treatment I’ve had so far has been medicinal cannabis and cbd - it helped me get off clonazepam and has helped me to get down to 50mgs of sertraline from 100. I’m looking to use psilocybin therapy once I get off sertraline as by far the research for that looks amazing… but I have to be off sertraline first which will be a nightmare sadly. Prior to sertraline I was on fluoxetine which didn’t do anything other than make me live at a point where I just didn’t care or feel about anything. Before fluoxetine I was on citalopram which was also an absolute nightmare and quite frightening to come off - I would move my head and my brain would feel like it was moving half a second behind it and I was getting strobing on my eyes. I really wish I’d never taken any of them and medical cannabis had been legal during that time - that has genuinely really helped me way more than ssri ever has.

*IF* *IN* *DOUBT* , *OPT* *OUT* I was recently prescribed Zoloft for OCD and anxiety by, probably, the most well respected psychiatrist in my country. I did my research and it turns out not even the companies who developed and now produce the drug, know exactly why it works, why it causes PSSD in some patients, what to do when these side effects arise, why some patients (specially younger patients) develop suicidal tendencies, why a vast majority of patients develop sexual inadequacies and how to treat them. Basically what they're saying is, "this may work or may wreck your life forever! now take your pills". Healthcare professionals are only professionals because of research. They know nothing more than you or I on subjects that haven't been researched yet. please note that, for instance, PSSD was only recognized as a side effect of SSRIs in 2014! these drugs have not been around long enough for any comprehensive longitudinal study. I have made an appointment with my therapist (not the psychiatrist) and will inform him that I will refuse medical intervention and I will try my chance with therapy and maybe even Psilocybin treatment, which has been around will relatively mild side effects for thousands of years. If you think you can beat the vicious cycle without neurotoxins (antidepressants), give cognitive therapy and behaviour modification a try I'd say.

Thanks Alex I really appreciate your video. I suffered depression / Anxiety (Panick attacks) since my late teens. I used Amytripsolene but the side effects were too much, then used SSRIs fluxatine which caused suicidal thoughts, self harm within a two weeks of taking. As a precaution I stuck with Amytripsolene (even with bad side effects) with Xanax (Panick attacks) which I took on and off over the past 20 years. Today my GP prescribed Sertraline (50 mg) only take 25 mg for first 6 days to deal with both anxiety and depression. I took my first 25 mg and did feel moody / agitated but will continue as per the GP instructions. My company has been great allowing me paid time off, however I always feel shame and guilt having to take time off and admit I need help. Honestly my biggest advice to your BF would for him to be open about talking to you about it. Once I was on them I spoke to my mum and partner and just made sure they knew that I was a bit worried. I then committed to talking about how I felt; it wasn’t a secret anymore so I didn’t have to shrug things off. You seem super supportive of him so I would say just acknowledge to him that this is such a massive step forward and now the door is open you’d like to continue the conversation candidly when he prompts. The not being big of chatting is the obstacle but I think that’s part of his learning opportunity here; he has a wonderful partner who is ready to support when he needs it. I would perhaps plan a few things to do over the next 4 weeks; a nice long walk, Sunday lunch etc. Stuff that’s just you two with no social obligation and you can drag him to. He should probably watch the vlogs and realise the next few weeks is a rollercoaster so patience is important; if he watches today’s video (1 month update) he should feel reassured it will be worth it!

I was prescribed zoloft two days ago and i have it sitting on my nightstand just staring at me. Im so scared to start. I just feel like i know now that i can keep myself from doing anyrhing bad to myself and im in controle in that way but im worried if it alters my mind badly i wont have that controle anymore and i have children and family that need me that i refuse to hurt just because im struggling. Im scared this medication may take away my controle. Im scared of the weight gain because ive alresdy gaind 40 lbs through the worst parts of my depression that i cant get rid of and my body image is at the lowest its ever been. Idk if i can handle gaining 10 more lbs through this journey. And im also scared that my depression had kept me from help for so long and it takes every once of energy inside me to even make an appointment let alone actually show up to one so if this makes me worse how will i get myself to reach out when i know i need it but im so dibilitated i can't get myself to do it. Im terrified but im also desperate for reliefe from this prison. Idk what to do. If i experiance really bad side effects i know i might just cut the medication cold turkey out of fear and that coukd just make me spiral and im not at a strong enough point in my life to fight something like that. This is terrifying. I hate it. Ive been given a list of tharapist that take my insurance and i have yet to be able to call and set anything up with them because thats scary in itself. Ive been through so much tharapy throughout my life and fear has always been what has stopped me from continuing at times. This fear is just as dibilitating as the depression and anxiety and idk how im supposed to push past it to ever get better.

Bruh I can’t sleep with this medication Is it possible for my psychiatrist to switch me to Xanax or a benzodiazepine
@AlexRobbMentalHealth
@AlexRobbMentalHealth 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I think some people do take Xanax with it but you have to be very careful of the drug interactions. Could you change the time you take it and see if that helps? Alternatively you might have a better time with Prozac?

they might switch you to another ssri, they’re careful about prescribing benzos because they’re very addictive and should only be taken occasionally in most cases (like during a pnic attack)

I’m that guy I have now three bottles of Zoloft haven’t touched one pill I suffer from debilitating panic attacks and haven’t jumped on Zoloft cause I don’t have any depression so I’m always wondering why a depression med and not a panic attack anxiety med that only targets those systems. I’m sure I’m completely wrong but atleast those are the lies I’m telling myself lol. Anyways I been taking half a .5M of clonozopam for about a year now I haven’t gone up in dosage a rarely ever take the second half the same day. Thanks for your videos I’m getting closer to taking my Zoloft almost there

Second day on it. I've literally been paralyzed on my bed with panic and anxiety the whole day. It made it a thousand times worse. On 25mg then 50 in a week more

There are other routes. Remember that serotonin is predominantly made in the gut - have you fixed your diet? Do you drink alcohol? There are many things to consider. SSRIs do help many people so it makes sense for people involved in treatment to favour them - that said, you are in charge of your body. Have you got access to a good therapist?

A Happy Change - Mental Health Recovery Yes! Only 25. I’m afraid I won’t be able to function on my job. I’m a mess and I know I need to start. I’m having panic attacks. Etc. it’s just awful. I’ve tried everything for a long time. I was going to split the 25 to start with.
