The main umpire checks are in between innings, off the field so they don’t delay pace of play. This one was a check by Joe Girardi because he was upset that his team is offensively challenged. The checks by coaches have always been allowed. No one did them because everyone used sticky stuff, so the other team would just check the other teams pitcher.

Yeah, they do it between innings, we know, but any kind of drama has the potential of delaying the warmup part of that limited time between innings when the opposing pitchers get to throw a handful of pitches off the mound before they face the next batter (in case they start to get cold). So these checks only have the potential of slowing down the game. It's just bad optics, especislly when mlb has been so ultrafocused (publically) on speeding up the pace of the game.

God forgive me but I can't stop laughing or fully believe this is real. They should make it proper. Turn out the lights. The ground crew wheels out a brick wall and a street light. The pitcher assumes the position. The umps, now wearing Keystone Cop uniforms, violate the pitchers openly for all to see. If contraband is found then a Paddy wagon (converted injury cart) and more Keystone Cops haul the pitcher off. If no contraband is found and the player is a minority then they haul them off anyway and give them a public defender who suggests they plead guilty and accept a disproportionate suspension or they'll go to jail. If the player asks them to prosecute the Keystone Cops for violating them then they get beat. The umps (during this game) handled it poorly, what they should’ve done was approach Max right when the inning was over or when he got yanked. That prevents him from losing his rhythm. Thb they had to check since the Phillies gun asked them to but I think they knew he was clean during the 3rd visit. This was attempt to get into Max’s head and it didn’t work. The Phillies GM also became the biggest joke in baseball afterwards for trying to fight an opposing player. smh, so embarrassing… Ps: Sorry for the paragraph

This could be sweat and rosin which are two legal substances. If one crew determines those two legal substances to be sticky and another crew doesn’t there is going to be no consistency in how games are called. There isn’t a standard set in place.

And while I get Scherzer's frustration, MLB announced these checks before they started, so it could not have been a surprise unless Scherzer also has not been watching SportsCenter or MLB tonight or otherwise paid attention to what is going on in his profession. But I do wonder how many pitchers will let the umps/opposing managers get into their head and pitch worse than they otherwise would after no longer being able to get away with banned substances. I'm a fan of the move by MLB. It may not be the steroid area anymore, but if it's now the era of pitchers of pitchers using banned substances to enhance their grip, it needs to be put to an end. Then there have been rules on a few players using too hard of a ball per the PGA rules, well the ball was too hard internally and the outer casing too soft/thin for PGA rules a really odd thing that should be let go as both should equal out the ball but nope. Then others that used a ball legal in size in some countries like Europe's main governing body but not in PGA rules or would pass the USGA rules but not PGA rules. This to me is why Golf needs in my opinion same rules on ball and equipment and main game rule stuff in USGA and PGA tournaments just keep the sides separate for sponsor stuff on the PGA side.
